  1. I think Arcia forced his way to the big leagues. He raked in AAA which kept giving him chances to show it in the majors. He's going to be good. You really didn't need hindsight to determine #1 and #3. Going with a rookie who has never been above AAA was a big risk and there was no backup plan despite several CF available cheaply (ex. Nyjer Morgan is in Japan). #3 was obvious to anyone looking at the opening day roster. So many pitchers were coming off of surgery. I didn't expect Worley to flame out but some pitcher always does and they should have anticipated that with all the medical issues of this pitching staff.
  2. Trading a top prospect for an established pitcher would make sense if the Twins were a .500 ballclub and ready to compete next season. They aren't. They can't afford to give up more talent than they get. They aren't close enough to the playoffs for it to make sense.
  3. Not the guy I'd be looking to deal. There are other prospects who probably should be traded before their stock falls - Max Kepler and Travis Harrison come to mind - but the Twins have little depth in the middle infield.
  4. The Trout versus Cabrera MVP debate is interesting playing out in the media. After watching the Twins recent play it is almost unfathomable that I could be watching the equivalent of Trout and Cabrera play for the Twins as soon as next season.
  5. Why will they spend more money? Because they make more in the long term when they win than when they lose.
  6. Interesting that we would be loving Colabello if we hadn't seen him up until now.
  7. I'd welcome a return of Scott Baker now that he's healthy. I'm also interested in Lincecum, Hughes, Haren, Josh Johnson and Jason Hammel. There are some low wattage lefties that might have a season left. Chris Capuano, Barry Zito, Scott Feldman, Scott Kazmir, Paul Maholm, Joe Saunders and Wandy Rodriguez if he gets bought out. Target Field is built for lefties. How much is Jorge De La Rosa going to get paid? I see a lot more options this offseason than last. They should have about $100M of room in the budget if they really spent 52% of revenue and weren't just stockpiling money for the Pohlad's tax bill.
  8. A "corner utility" player can be pretty valuable to have on the bench. Look at the career of Eric Hinske for example. The Twins did well with Michael Cuddyer sliding to whichever position was needed that week. I still wonder what Casey Blake could have done for the team. It would be great if Plouffe could fill in where needed at the corners. As a starter you're looking to replace him but he's a fair sight better than what a team can typically call up from AAA.
  9. Not enough bat for that glove, not enough glove for that bat. He's a tweener who only has value at 3B and even then it isn't much. However, if Danny Valencia can find a bench role in the big leagues then so can Plouffe. When Sano finally displaces him he can platoon in the OF with Arcia, Presley and Parmelee. Do the Twins like him as the RH bench bat better than Colabello or Wilkin Ramirez?
  10. Should keep Bill Smith busy for a while
  11. Go with upside. Josh Johnson, Dan Haren, Phil Hughes and Scott Baker. I think the guys currently in the rotation showed they aren't playoff caliber pitchers.
  12. If they don't sign at least one decent pitcher this offseason they're fooling themselves. That starting rotation screams 100 losses. How about this? Josh Johnson Dan Haren Kevin Correia Scott Diamond Kyle Gibson Deduno, Meyer, Worley and May in AAA.
  13. Even the bullpen will be tough if he doesn't have a breaking ball. Changing speeds is good but you need movement to succeed in the majors.
  14. It's all about economics. When the Twins brought Bert to the majors they kept him under the reserve clause. With free agency you'll only see a player brought up if they're clearly better than a mediocre free agent. That's unusual for a 19 year old.
  15. If you could believe college and high school radar gun readings there would be dozens of pitchers in the majors who throw 98MPH. It's a lot more difficult to throw that hard for 6 months as a professional than it is to throw that hard for one pitch in front of a scout.
  16. Teams will have the chance to let the Twins burn off another $500,000+ in salary if they just wait two weeks. The playoff picture should be clearer by then also.
  17. I doubt the Twins will give Sano a September callup mostly due to roster considerations. Sano will play winter ball. I know they'll have him competing for the 3B job in spring training next season. Terry Ryan has a lot of work to do to acquire pitching this offseason. If Plouffe can help get a pitcher he will be gone, just like Ben Revere. If Plouffe is still here in April he will keep Sano in AAA for a little while until they can trade Trevor. Ryan has to manage his assets during this transition. Several veteran players (Plouffe, Doumit, Willingham, Burton, Duensing, Correia) will be shopped this offseason as Terry Ryan remakes his roster with younger players (Tonkin, Pinto, Hicks, Sano, etc). I agree that they won't worry about service time with Sano. He's a good candidate for an Evan Longoria type contract. Having Target Field is supposed to mean they don't have to nickel and dime their own players.
  18. Nishioka only cost $6M in the grand scheme of things. They should make bets like that all the time. If only one pays off they're way ahead. The only thing that disturbs me about Nishioka is how wrong the scouts were about his defense.
  19. Buxton is only one level behind Rosario. It won't be two years between their debuts.
  20. He's not on the 40 man roster so it is not likely.
  21. Have the Twins EVER picked up salary in a trade?
  22. If he's drafted in the Rule 5 draft he's 99% coming back after spring training. Wimmers is getting roughed up in rookie ball and hasn't pitched effectively since 2010. He's pitched one game above A-ball. He's not ready to spend next year on a big league roster. That would be a minor miracle. I don't think the Twins would cut him during the offseason but he might be cut after spring training next year if he hasn't regained his velocity.
  23. There is a bigger likelihood that Wimmers gets released than he gets selected in the Rule 5 draft. I suppose a team could take him and stash him on the disabled list all year but they still have to keep him on the roster for 90 days.
  24. Going out on a limb here but I think Pinto is the only player who hasn't seen the majors yet who gets a September callup.
