  1. Agreed! Maybe he wasn't exactly correct on each little thing he said, but it sounds like a rant. As if he was throwing out examples of how guys have been disappointing. He just went through each position battle and made a little comment, but for the most part he was stating how a few position battles haven't been resolved at this point because the players haven't been performing. Perhaps their off-the-field attitudes haven't been there either. Players can either take it and use it as motivation, or they can cry and play the 12-year old girl part because someone said something bad about them. Suck it up. Work for your pay. And impress someone.
  2. As we found out last year, that "routine out" was not routine for this team. Guy on 3rd with less than 2 outs: here Percent of scored base runners: here Just having productive outs: here We can argue these stats as well. However, I think they help emphasize the fact that SOMEONE has to hit that fly ball, or run out that grounder to avoid the double play. Last year the Twins were not good at it. We needed a fly ball...and we got a chopper to second, or a K. Good players are more capable of doing the "routine" plays.
  3. Arcia - LF Hicks - Center Parmelee - RF Why Parms? Because I feel like it. As I think the Twins rarely push people quickly unless out of need, Buxton will still be in AAA/AA. If not, then Hicks struggled to make contact and they brought up Buxton to help out. Swap Buxton for Hicks. After Kubel fails to catch up to anything resembling a fastball and Willingham falls apart, Parms will play enough to not embarrass himself nightly this year. We still won't tell anyone that he plays for us though. He won't be THAT good. Thus, he will be in RF to start next year. If he hits with the power people thought he had...then he's the prototypical slow-footed RF that y'all have been talking about. Just throwing out some hastily written thoughts. I'd much rather have Arcia, Hicks, and Buxton...but that means all 3 have to figure it out.
  4. Willingham in RF and Arcia in LF? And that Miguel Sano is only 6'3" and 195 lbs. He hasn't been that skinny since he was 16...but that's what you get when you only use baseball-reference. Add in that he calls Sano big at 195 but Buxton weights ONLY 189 lbs. His writing is even suspect. This whole piece reads like it was whipped together ripping off a bunch of prospect lists.
  5. I came back to this link on another computer, also W7 using Chrome, and it showed up. It might have been the firewall at work. They tend to frown upon streaming and anything video. One reason this site is nice...mostly text and gif's.
  6. Is it supposed to be blank?
  7. If that's the problem, why doesn't he just sit and throw curveballs to one of the best eyes in the game...Mauer? Help each other out. Why is it that a pitching coach is the only person who can help a pitcher? After a bunch of curveballs, I bet Joe could tell him if he's tipping his pitch based on his grip/motion. Joe can't tell him how to fix it, but he could point out his weaknesses and that's half the battle.
  8. I'm watching the Indians ST game right now. Not to scout out the opposition or anything, just to have the sounds of baseball in the background. Nothing like a good crack of the bat to make you turn your head. It's here. Baseball is here. Life is good.
  9. I'm hoping for OVER. The 20th at the earliest since the Twins games will be televised the 16th, 17th, and the 19th. I'd like to see him take a few hacks live.
  10. Do you think the reports of Plouffe's added muscle will help him? He may hit some fly balls a little further, but his strikeouts probably won't change and it could affect his ability to play D.
  11. I don't mind Florimon either, I was just hoping that between him, Escobar, and Bartlett that there would be a fair competition and the best player at the end of spring training would be the starter. I was trying to point out that Pedro has been quoted as saying the starting SS job was not guaranteed but it appears now that Gardy has done just that. I can't say much about Santana's potential, as I haven't watched him and I'll let some others get into the stats. If you're curious about the many arguments for/against Florimon, there's a wonderfully active thread started by Riverbrian called simply Pedro Florimon.
  12. Florimon is out about 2 weeks after an appendectomy. You can read the full story here: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10472508/pedro-florimon-minnesota-twins-expected-miss-two-weeks Of actual note is the quote from Gardy: "[Florimon's] our shortstop," Gardenhire said. "[Jason] Bartlett is here to try and make the club, but Florimon is our shortstop." Well, so much for not just handing him the job. Is it possible that Gardy-nice is even nicer than Mauer-nice? "Oh hey, Florimon, I heard your appendix hurts. You know what, just take a couple weeks off. The starting job is yours. I don't want you to have to worry." Sorry for the rant, but I was really hoping for some spring competition.
  13. Are there any other Twins fans in Dallas? I think it'd be fun to get together for spring training or a game and have a beer and discuss the team. Even if you're too far away, I think this could be a way to foster a greater community of fans that actually know each other rather than just a screen name that you "talk to" instead of "talk with." I'm in the local Dallas area if anyone wants to post here or PM me. Just as a note: DO NOT give out specific personal information in this thread. It is open to the public and anyone can look you up. This is not out of paranoia, but simple internet safety. If you actually want to meet up I highly recommend a PM.
  14. I just wanted to post here to try and bring this thread to the front a little more. It is interesting to see the questions of the previous season, how the fans feel about it, how it's turned out (so far), and how we feel it about it now. Personally, I don't feel too bad about resigning him. I'm looking forward to seeing how he pitches in ST. The guy seems like a Glue Guy in the dugout and a very hard worker. One can only hope that his work ethic motivates some other players and it translates to the field for the enjoyment of the fans. Plus, he wants to be here. He's proud to be here. Maybe he fosters some team spirit.
  15. I did not expect the jams to be as bad as they were. I've been to A, AA, and AAA games across the country and Hammond Stadium had the worst traffic jams before and after games. I found out early that I should just go in a couple hours ahead of time and watch some B games (drink a few morning beers) instead of developing serious road rage. I think the lack of roads entering and exiting the stadium general area exacerbates the problem. As a side note, I went to Sanibel Island and the water was pretty cold still. Plus, there were large populations of sting rays/manta rays (some kind of ray) traveling up the shoreline and I was told by some locals to not go swimming at that time, or really enter the water very far. They were visible from the shore. It was a seasonal thing. Awesome shell beaches made for some nice scenic views and sure revitalized the girlfriend though.
  16. Agreed. Since 2007 there hasn't been a single recipient capable of sustained MLB success. No wonder the twins pitching has been the worst in baseball lately. These are our best/most successful minor league pitchers, and 5 of the last 6 are no longer with the team and brought zero return upon departure. Awesome.
  17. I'm excited to see May pitch. I hope his high K rate maintains in AAA and the bigs. If so, I'll never complain about a walk from him. I'll give him a pass. Screw it. Everybody gets one.
  18. By "tread water" do you mean "barely stay alive" or "comfortably keep oneself from drowning?" Last year was more of the former and I'm hoping this year is more of the latter.
  19. Did you intentionally forget to put Colabello on a roster?
  20. Nice find! I like looking at team statistics. While not the same thing as clutch, I watched our team last year in regards to productive outs made. It's a pretty sad sight. Guys with more than 25 opportunities: Florimon 42% Dozier 39% Plouffe 32% League Ave 31% Hicks 30% Arcia 27% Parmelee 27% Mauer 26% Morneau 25% Doumit 20% Willingham 17% Thomas 16% Colabello* 6% *only 18 opportunities. Close to my cutoff, but it was so low I added it. If you look at percentage of times our guys scored someone from 3rd with less than 2 outs, Morneau jumps over the average along with Florimon and Dozier. That's it. Arcia, Mauer, Pinto, and Doumit were close to average. Plouffe takes a nose dive and sucks as bad as Willingham (both at 32%, league average was 51%). I hated it when Willing-strikeout-ham stepped to the plate looking to score Dozier from 3rd after Mauer singled him over. Just walk to the dugout guys because Willingham is going to either K or pop up to the infield and then Plouffe will hit a fly ball just too short to be worth anything. This all just goes to show, if we had Brian Dozier playing every position then the team would've been THE GREATEST TEAM EVER!!! AAAGH!!!
  21. I'm also an Escobar fan. I hope he continues to hit like he did at AAA at the end of last year. However, I'm not so sure he's who I'd want at 3rd base. I didn't actually like his D at 3rd. He didn't look as comfortable as at SS (best) or 2nd. I won't use stats since the sample size is small, but they're aren't favorable for him at 3rd. My views are just from watching him closely as a fan of his. Plus, I'd prefer it if Plouffe was given every opportunity there until Sano is ready. A low average Plouffe with chance of power is better than a low average Escobar with no power (as a 3rd baseman). I do hope he comes into spring training and gives Florimon a run for the starting SS position. I have no problems with the defensive "loss" and I think he has a better chance at becoming a better hitter. Florimon never looked like he was seeing pitches late, just guessing at what they were out of the hand. Escobar seemed to try and adjust as he was swinging to go get those breaking balls. Neither was particularly successful though... Fun article! Thanks.
  22. Just a thought, but what if the team trades Correia? He looked pretty solid last year. Innings eater. While he has a place as a starter on this team, he might bring in some value in prospects. Just a thought.
  23. I'm not huge on picking up Baker since we already have Hughes. I think they have very similar pitching styles. Unless they space them so that no team sees both of them. It'd be like facing the same guy two games in a row.
  24. Dozier wasn't particularly successful stealing last year. 14 SB and 7 CS. I don't see Gardy sending him too often as he hates to give away outs. I went with Mastroianni because I think he's going to come back healthy and be an often used 4th outfielder that has a SB% in the mid 80's (88% in 2012). Plus, he's the only guy Gardy will give the green light to steal third. Plus, I'm biased. He's the most exciting guy on the basepaths and I hope he tears it up. Games are much more enjoyable when he's on base. Wouldn't it be great if Mauer led the team?! He's really not that slow once he gets moving.
