  1. Why didn't he do that in the fourth inning?
  2. Hey, Tonkin IS younger than Stauffer...
  3. Probably wouldn't have made a difference, but it looked like Mauer only half stretched there.... I'ma stop piling on now. Come on bats! We need a slump buster. Arcia was usually good for that last year... Buxton can get this team fired up in a hurry if he can start hitting.
  4. I saw something like that in Mexico once... Seriously, Guy Fierri ordered a 15 inch hotdog with habenara peppers and onions out of a school bus.... uh oh, crushed... anyway, it was called a "homewrecker" and probably belongs at a ball park. May needs to get the ball down. Seriously? Again?
  5. May battled out of that, but he's having a lil trouble locating and lots of balls between the belt and letters...
  6. What are you guys watching during commercials? Anything better than DDD on Food?
  7. Can anyone remember Mauer EVER going for the lead in sac situation?
  8. Needless shot at Shane Robinson who has hit pretty darn well and definitely contributed so far this year. We're not where we are without Robinson and Nunez proving how vital depth and versatility is in back up position players. Arcia was my favorite player last year, but he has to be better than Robinson before I want to see him play more than Robinson.
  9. The problem is we didn't sign Joe Mauer to be "the old Joe Mauer". We signed him to be the 2009 MVP Joe Mauer. He's given us no seasons like that since. Some thought he could maintain his 2009 MVP level of success for at least a few years. Others thought he took a month off and juiced up for a contract. Midway into his contract, we've given up on getting the 2009 Joe mauer, we would be more than satisfied with the old Joe Mauer, but instead we're just getting Old Joe Mauer. The main thing is his bat speed has slowed down, not strike zones or shifts. It's obvious because he can't hit the ball as far anymore. His advantage of being able to watch the ball longer and let it get deep is gone. He has trouble catching up to heat. He has to start his swing earlier leaving him vulnerable to off speed. And compounding that problem is the fact that he's trying to pull the ball more which is taking its toll on his swing and requires that he get the bat through even earlier which means even more guessing. He should go back to driving the ball to left. Barry Bonds never worried about the shift. Ortiz never worried about it. Ted Williams hit .400 against shifts. He should then think about a lighter bat.
  10. .262, 5 HR, 707 OPS Excuses will start to pile up. People will surmise he's not healthy. Pretty soon the doctors will in fact diagnose an injury that had been bothering him since, oh we'll say spring training. He'll have some minor arthroscopic wrist surgery or something, and he'll be out for the season in mid-August but could possibly be ready for the playoffs if we're still in the hunt.
  11. I'll state again that I think the team's rebuild has been hurt more by relying too heavily on young players than too heavily on declining vets. Our inability to bring in talent in free agency left us with nothing to trade during lost seasons. It allowed developing players to quit working on their games, and left us without serviceable options all over the field. You can't always predict which vets will pan out, just like you can't predict which prospects will make it. This is why you bring in as much talent as you possibly can. in whatever capacity you can. I thought it was crazy that the team brought back Pelfrey. I thought they were crazy to go north with Boyer. I'm willing to forgive them on Stauffer and give them credit for cutting their losses. I actually hope he accepts his assignment and stays with the organization. His velocity was way down. I wouldn't mind seeing if he can provide something when healthy. Re: Tonkin, Oliveros, and Slama, look at our AAA line up. Our best hitters in Rochester are... Pinto? Santana? Arcia occasionally? I don't think dominating a bunch of Eric Fryers and Doug Bernier's means we should trust these guys to get Moustakis or Miggy in a big spot.
  12. To me, Stauffer was a necessary risk that didn't work out. Everyone saw how our bull pen collapsed last year. Everyone pointed to the pen as a weakness going into the year. We had to do something, and Stauffer was coming off an ok year. Similar to the Jered Burton signing in my eyes. Just didn't work out. I do not perceive lack of trust in young players to be a huge problem. We relied on Hicks for like 3 years now, and each year he's screwed us to some extent. This year was less because Robinson put together a decent first month. Danny Santana screwed us. Vargas and Arcia have screwed us. Imagine if we hadn't signed Torii Hunter. I think it's a bigger mistake to trust AAA success over a Major League track record. But here's the thing, you can have both IF you take the risk and bring in some vets. You can always replace them with young guys if they warrant the call or the veteran falters. Out of our FA signings, Hunter has worked out, Nunez has contributed, and Robinson has contributed. Stauffer did not. Santana hasn't played. Meanwhile, Pinto has flopped, Santana has flopped, Buxton and Sano aren't ready. Burdi has imploded. Reed hasn't been much better. Arcia, Vargas, Walker and Hicks seems stuck in a state of arrested development. It's as Ann as the nose on Plain's face, organizational depth requires some Stauffers.
  13. Or is that spinning their intention to keep him in the pen? Many relief pitchers abandon the wind-up because they often come in with guys already on base...
  14. I mean, the real real problem is that Mauer has lost bat speed. It's made worse for Joe because he was a hitter who depended on letting the ball get deep. He now has to guess, start his swing earlier, watch it less, and square it up more exactly. Mauer's inability to lift the ball has lead to a ridiculous amount of double plays without offsetting 3 run shots. I suggested this in an earlier Mauer thread, while others stated the stats weren't there. Well, they're there now. Most of Mauer's HR in prior years came to straight away center or left. His first home run in Target Field was a bomb into the trees in center. He's lost the power to go center or oppo. He's in trouble.
  15. I have my doubts. I hope you're right. I'm not sure how you can use either in a winnable game at this point...
  16. Positive, Hicks looked great going back on that ball hit over his head. No deke necessary.
  17. I think I said 3 weeks ago that Aaron Thompson needs to get off the team. He's bad. Really bad. Duensing isn't a ton better, but at least he has history and injury excuse on his side.
  18. Santana took defensive swings almost the entire at bat. He never once tried to drive the ball. Last year he drove the ball all over the field. He's tentative and pitchers are eating him up. He just needs to relax and play loose. Touch to do in the bigs though...
  19. Good teams make you pay for mistakes and take advantage of extra outs.
  20. I'm fine with the play. That ball was hit awfully hard to a gap and slicing. My understanding is that the ball has been dying in the cold air which made that split second judgement about where it was going to hit off the wall even more difficult. Hick's only play on the ball would have been to careen into the wall at an awkward angle. I believe Torii Hunter shattered his ankle doing that in the other awkward Fenway corner a decade ago. I don't think it was a misplay, just poor execution on the throw back in. There's a difference between taking the conservative play and an actual misplay. Kirby Puckett won gold gloves without ever diving headfirst for a ball in front of him. Did he misplay balls because he didn't dive, or did he simply make conservative decisions?
  21. Besides Escobar going oppo over the Monster today, and believing Vargas to be our best option as well as future option at DH, I will say that punting is often the right play, however boring and unpopular it may be to the fans. They played the situation conservatively while we were winning. We've lost a couple. I expect some changes will come.
  22. I think Santana's defense has improved. I also like that he doesn't seem to take his struggles at the plate with him into the field. He's pressing right now at the plate, probably because every time he steps into the box he has one eye on the pitcher and one eye on the dugout to see if they have someone packing his belongings into a suitcase. That being said, he's not playing Florimon defense, and arguably not even providing Florimon offense. Escobar is a better all around shortstop. I'd give Santana 2-3 days off (like we did with Arcia and Vargas with some success) before sending him down. I do think having our prospects put in the work and demonstrate results before rewarding them with a call-up is a reasonable development strategy. How long have we heard about Arcia and Vargas wasting their batting practice sessions? Pinto has done nothing recently. It's painful to see talent languishing in AAA while we struggle to fill gaps in the big leagues, but I do think instilling professionalism and work ethic is important to the short and long-term success of this team. Do we want a Vargas or Arcia that can maybe outproduce Escobar (Arcia started his rehab 0-11, Escobar is certainly better than he's hit so far), or do we want a Vargas or Arcia at their full potential? I don't think either answer is necessarily wrong, but at the beginning of June, I guess I'm ok with making guys work their way up, which I sort of think Vargas is doing anyway.
  23. I think Twinsdaily would straight up supernova if the Twins extended Pelfrey again... but somehow, someway, this is actually a legitimate possibility... I think I'm for trading Pelf just to avoid the powder keg.
