Minnesota Twins affiliates had just one victory on the night, but that was a good sign for one of their top prospects as that meant he was back to his dominating ways on the mound. A former first round pick also led his offense with a pair of home runs on the evening, and another team lost in walk-off fashion with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Keep reading to find out how all your favorite Minnesota Twins prospects fared in Tuesday nights series opening action! TRANSACTIONS The Minnesota Twins selected the contract of 35-year old RHP Nick Vincent from the St. Paul Saints, and optioned RHP Beau Burrows back to triple-A. St. Paul released 1B Roberto Pena and RHP Rob Whalen, while calling up LHP Chris Nunn from Wichita and activating RHP Joe Ryan, fresh off his stint with the United States Olympic team. In double-A, the Wind Surge released RHP Joe Kuzia and activated RHP Simeon Woods Richardson, also recently returned from the Olympics in Tokyo. SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 8, Indianapolis 9 Box Score St. Paul and Indianapolis traded leads a few times on Tuesday with big innings, but the Saints came out on the losing end with two-outs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a walk-off blast. Starting for the Saints was left-hander Andrew Albers, and while he finished five frames, one of those big innings for Indy was the fifth, where they scored five to take a 7-4 lead. In all, Albers allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out four on the game. After Indianapolis took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a home run, St. Paul answered with a three-run top of the fourth behind back-to-back jacks from Gilberto Celestino and Ben Rortvedt. Celestino’s was of the two-run variety to tie the game. Nick Gordon added an RBI single in the fourth to give the good guys a 4-2 lead before the big five-run inning for the bad guys. The recently claimed Ralph Garza Jr. also made his second appearance with the organization to start the sixth inning and went two scoreless frames. He hit one batter and struck out two. The Saints offense tied the game at seven in the seventh inning with another three-run frame. Three straight singles from JT Riddle, Jose Miranda, and Nick Gordon plated the first run of the inning. That was followed by a hit-batter to load the bases, then a walk to Celestino and another hit batter to score the other two runs. St. Paul took the lead 8-7 in the eighth frame thanks to a Tomas Telis RBI single. Yennier Cano was summoned from the bullpen to start the eighth inning and recorded five outs, including three strikeouts, until major leaguer Michael Chavis stepped to the plate with a runner on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Chavis didn’t miss the first pitch he saw, sending a middle-out fastball over the fence in left-center for the walk-off win. Cano was charged with the blown save and loss in allowing the two runs on three hits and two walks in his 1 2/3 innings pitched. The Saints got multiple hits on the night from six hitters in their lineup, including Miranda (2-for-5, R, K), Gordon (2-for-5, R, RBI, 2 K, SB), Telis (2-for-5, R, RBI), Celestino (2-for-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K), Drew Maggi (2-for-4, 2B, BB, SB), and Riddle (2-for-4, 3 R, 2B). WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 5, Tulsa 1 Box Score Coming off a pair of outings where he allowed six earned runs in each, starting pitching Jordan Balazovic was looking to get back on track like he’d been when he delivered 25 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings earlier in the year. Mission accomplished. Balazovic started a new streak with six shutout innings, scattering five singles and zero walks, along with punching out four Drillers. He finished his game after 87 pitches, with 59 going for strikes (67.8%), including thirteen swinging. He was up to 97 MPH on the radar gun with his fastball during the game in picking up his fourth win of the season. After a pair of singles in the first, he faced one batter over the minimum through the fifth inning, retiring six men in a row before an error in the third, and then seven in a row after a leadoff single in the fourth. The Wind Surge offense spotted Balazovic a nice lead before he even took the mound, when cleanup hitter Trey Cabbage clubbed 19th home run of the season (10th in double-A) in the top of first, a three-run shot that left the stadium. That was it for the offenses on both teams until the late innings, when Wichita added a couple of insurance runs thanks to an errant throw on a steal attempt in the seventh, and an Ernie De La Trinidad solo home run in the ninth. Jason Garcia was the first man out of the bullpen to start the seventh, but recorded only one out before being lifted as he loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter. Jordan Gore escaped that jam by inducing a double play ball to end the inning with the shutout still intact. Back out for the eighth, the Drillers finally got on the board with a solo homer, but Gore also struck out two in the frame. Erik Manoah Jr. came on in the ninth for his Double-A and Wichita debut and delivered a scoreless frame. He gave up one walk and struck out two. While there were no hitters to collect more than one hit in the game, there were five different batters who scored a run for the Wind Surge and four who reached base twice via a walk or hit-by-pitch (Austin Martin, Roy Morales, Cabbage, Aaron Whitefield). Spencer Steer added a double to the effort and Whitefield stole his 22nd base of the season. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 2, Peoria 7 Box Score The Kernels offense was outhit 10-3 by the Chiefs in this one, and the final scoreboard reflected that disparity. Starter Tyler Watson was roughed up in the third inning for five earned runs before his night came to an early end with one out. In 2 1/3 innings, he allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out four. Andrew Cabezas came on from the bullpen and allowed two inherited runners to score in addition to one of his own in the fourth to put Peoria out front 6-1 after four innings. Cabezas allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings. Relievers Melvi Acosta and Tyler Palm then steadied the ship for the final four innings. Acosta allowed one hit and struck out one in his two frames, and Palm surrendered an unearned run on one hit while striking out four Chiefs in his two innings. Edouard Julien (single), Yunior Severino (home run), and Matt Wallner (double) accounted for the Kernels three hits. Wallner drove in the other Kernels run. As a team they managed just three at-bats with runners in scoring position on the game and left only three men on base. Julien also stole his fifth base with the Kernels, and 26th on the season. Julien also drew a walk and continues to lead the minors in that category this season. MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 5, Bradenton 8 Box Score The Mighty Mussels built a 5-0 lead after the top of the sixth inning behind a slugger who has been struggling most of the year, but the rest of the lineup and bullpen was unable to hold it on Tuesday. Starter Sean Mooney was fantastic for the first three innings in this one, allowing no hits and striking out six Marauders. He was extremely efficient as well, throwing just 38 pitches, with 29 going for strikes and falling behind in a count only once among the nine batters he faced. In the top of the fourth, Aaron Sabato got Fort Myers on the board with his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to open the game’s scoring. He added another home run in the sixth, this one of the two-run variety, to extend the Mussels lead to 5-0. Misael Urbina drove in two others earlier in the inning with his eighth double of the season. Unfortunately, the offense had just one other hit on the game, a single from Will Holland. The team had just three at-bats with runners in scoring position in the game and drew only two walks. Not much you can do beyond home runs when other opportunities never surface. The bullpen duo of Orlando Rodriguez (2 2/3 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, BB, 4 K) and Matthew Swain (1 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, K) combined to allow eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings that put the game well out of reach. Denny Bentley finished off the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing four hits but being charged with no runs. He walked one and struck out one as the Mussels fell to the team in front of them in the standings by 5.0 games. COMPLEX CHRONICLES FCL Twins 2, FCL Braves 3 Box Score The Twins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to consecutive walks to start the game that were followed by a balk, a Wander Valdez RBI single, and a successful double-steal attempt. Unfortunately for the offense they were unable to scratch any more runs across the plate the rest of the game. Valdez (2-for-4, RBI, K) collected two of the team's five hits, Argenis Jiminez had the only extra-base-hit with a triple, and Alerick Soularie drew two walks out of the leadoff spot, but also struck out three times. As a team they were just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, left seven men on base, and struck out 18 times. Left-hander Wilker Reyes made the start for the Twins and went the first four innings. He scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs while striking out four batters. Matt Mullenbach came on for the next three innings and kept the game tied, surrendering two hits while also striking out four Braves. Ramon Pineda finished the game with two-plus innings, but allowed the Braves to easily get the winning run in the 10th inning after a pair of wild pitches to the leadoff man. He gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out three in taking the loss. No he wasn't, maybe average. So big power was never the expectation for him the way I look at it. I find the disappointment with that aspect while he's dealing with whatever hand thing he's got going on in his first professional season to be an overreaction. The allure with him was always his hit-tool, which is still the case. He looks like a great option as a future leadoff hitter at this point, and no reason to think there still can't be more than that.

He had an hand injury which he appears to be playing through this season, and has been noted to have affected his swing compared to college. I'd say it's a pretty good sign he's still hitting this well (average wise) if it is. Time will tell!

Like all the options to try and replace Berrios. However, I don't think any of them are going to come cheaper than he would have so put the odds of the Twins being able to get one of them at virtually zero. I shoot for Stroman as I think he's the one you'd have the best chance at if you're willing to overpay, and they will have to overpay.

I agree because I actually struggled to pick anyone on this night. But the 6 K's for Sands in his short time was a much higher bar than anyone else. I also watched the Wichita game, and he made some big pitches and was great until the 4th inning. Olson was also good for 5 innings, but then hit a big wall. Nunn has merit on picking up a clean save but really hard for me to give it to a one inning guy in any circumstance.

There is more than one new prospect in the Minnesota Twins minor league system after the trade deadline, but perhaps the biggest one that came over made his organizational debut on Tuesday night in Double-A. TRANSACTIONS SS/OF Austin Martin was activated for the Wichita Wind Surge and he led off their game tonight, playing shortstop. RHP John Stankiewicz was assigned from the FCL Twins to Fort Myers. RHP Miguel Rodriguez was activated from the injured list for the Mighty Mussels. SAINTS SENTINEL Louisville 4, St. Paul 5 Box Score The Saints utilized a bullpen game in the first game of the week’s series against the Bats on Tuesday, sending out Ian Hamilton as the opener. He went three innings, allowing two runs on two solo homers, and striking out two. He was followed by Kyle Barraclough who went the next two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out three batters. Robinson Leyer got the sixth and seventh innings and was charged with a blown save. That’s due to him allowing Louisville to tie the game at three on another solo home run in the sixth, to the rehabbing Mike Moustakas. Edgar Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth inning, picking up his third win in the process, by allowing one hit and striking out one. Nick Vincent finished the game to pick up his fifth save of the season, but made it a little interesting by allowing another solo home run to close the gap to 5-4. He struck out two hitters. On offense the Saints got on the scoreboard in the second inning thanks to a Ben Rortvedt home run, his second on the season in Triple-A. They took the lead 3-2 after five innings when Rob Refsnyder and Gilberto Celestino each delivered RBI singles. In the eighth inning it was a two-run single from Twins Daily’s Hitter of the Month for July, Jimmy Kerrigan, that put the game just out of reach for Louisville. Jose Miranda (2-for-4, R, 2B, K), Rortvedt (3-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, RBI), and Kerrigan (2-for-4, 2 RBI) each had multiple hits for the home team in the win. WIND SURGE WISDOM Midland 5, Wichita 6 Box Score The story in this game was sure to be the organization debut of prospect Austin Martin, whom the Twins received in their trade of Jose Berrios to the Toronto Blue Jays. It was a bit of a mixed bag as far as offense and defense goes, but he was certainly exciting in his debut. Martin reached base twice out of the leadoff spot for the Wind Surge, first with a single in the fourth inning for his first hit in the organization. On B.J. Boyd’s double that followed, he came around to score all the way from first, including a nifty slide to avoid the tag at home. He reached base again in the sixth after being hit by a pitch in the back of his knee (his 15th HBP of the year), and it looked a lot worse than it actually was at first as he collapsed in the batters box, then seemed to head immediately toward the dugout. But he did stay in the game and on defense later in the seventh, ended a bases loaded threat with a 6-3 double play on a grounder up the middle that kept the Wind Surge in the lead at 6-5. Martin was also charged with two errors in the game. The first came in the fifth inning on a hard hit ball up the middle. He made a nice half-dive smother to keep it in the infield, but lost control on the transfer and ended up sailing his throw to first base. The second came in the seventh on a ball he tried backhand in the hole but it bounced off him into the outfield and led to an unearned run before he killed the rally later with that nice double play. But enough about the new guy! Wichita scored first in this one in the bottom of the first, thanks to B.J. Boyd’s eighth home run of the season, and added a second run in the third on a wild pitch after Spencer Steer clubbed a two-out double. They added three more runs in the fourth on a two-run homer from Aaron Whitefield, and then the double from Boyd to score Martin. Whitefield added a necessary insurance run in the sixth with a sac fly to score Trey Cabbage, who had led off the inning with a double. Making the start for the Wind Surge was Cole Sands, who has been on a strict pitch count since returning from injury in the middle of July. To open the game he gave up a triple, but worked around it with a popout and pair of strikeouts to come out unscathed. He finished 3 2/3 innings on the night, and finally got bit in the fourth inning. Overall he was charged with two earned runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out six batters. Alex Phillips was the first reliever summoned from the bullpen and went the next 1 2/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs of his own on a homer in the sixth, but also struck out two. The recently acquired Evan Sisk finished the next 2/3 of an inning, fighting his control to allow one run on three walks while striking out one. With the score 6-5 Wind Surge at this point, Mitchell Osnowitz and Chris Nunn finished off any further comeback attempt with a combined three scoreless innings. Osnowitz picked up a hold with two scoreless, allowing three hits and striking out two. Nunn picked up his first save with Wichita with a one-two-three ninth, including a K. Boyd (2-for-4, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI), Spencer Steer (2-for-4, R, 2B, K), and Cabbage (2-for-4, R, 2B, K) had multiple hits for the offense. Whitefield led the way with three RBIs. KERNELS NUGGETS Quad Cities 8, Cedar Rapids 3 Box Score Cedar Rapids got on the scoreboard first in this one in the second inning after loading the bases with nobody out. Max Smith delivered an RBI single and was followed by a sac fly from Gabriel Maciel and 2-0 lead. Starting pitcher Jon Olson held the River Bandits to just one hit through the first three innings, but a single followed by a double in the fourth finally put a runner across in the fourth. After a one-two-three fifth inning Olsen came back out for the sixth, and ran into trouble immediately. He was lifted after loading the bases, and finished five plus innings. He was charged with four earned runs on six hits, one walk, and struck out three batters. He was supplanted by reliever Andrew Cabezas, who promptly gave up a bases clearing triple, then a double for a run allowed of his own. A bit mad at himself probably, he channeled some anger and struck out the next three hitters he faced to end the inning with his team down 5-2. He would add a scoreless seventh inning to keep his team within striking distance. The Kernels closed the lead to two in the bottom of the sixth with another sac fly from Maciel, but the lone run was a bit disappointing as they had the bases with nobody out. The bullpen duo of Breckin Williams and Melvi Acosta then wasn’t able to keep Quad Cities at bay in the eighth and ninth innings, allowing them to extend their lead to the final of 8-3. Williams gave up one run (unearned) on one hit while striking out one in the eighth. Acosta allowed two earned runs on four hits in the ninth and struck out two batters. The loss extends the River Bandits lead in the Central-West Division standings to nine games, but the Kernels remain tied for the second best record in the league. MUSSEL MATTERS Dunedin @ Fort Myers, Postponed (rain) The Mighty Mussels and Blue Jays were rained out on Tuesday. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, with righthander Sean Mooney on the mound for Fort Myers in game one. I don't think I'd feel bad about a Gavin Lux, Josiah Gray, and other pitching lotto ticket return. Is that too much for a Dodgers fan? (for Berrios/Rogers)

If Hosmer's contract is coming to the Twins, C.J. Abrams needs to be the headliner prospect, IMO. Weathers has been very good, but having Hosmer in there basically removes any value for the Twins. Gore also is a major risk, he's not been right since 2019 and currently isn't even playing because he's been so bad and out of whack. (Note: I do not think the Padres would trade Abrams or Weathers)

You're not asking me, but my answer would be a resounding NO, and you shouldn't want to either. Gore has had the yips for well over a year now. He's a major risk in that he needs to be fixed. He'd be a decent part of a package, but shouldn't be the major piece.

Jake Cronenworth, also a 2021 All-Star at 2B, begs to differ about they have no one good there. They're getting Eric Hosmer off of 1B with the Frazier move (Cronenworth will play there now). Frazier is also under team control through 2023. You could be right Abrams is untouchable, but not for the reasons you're citing, IMO. Definitely don't disagree about the lack of pitching prospects the Twins should want from the Padres, but Abrams would be an awesome get. Is fun to prognosticate!

One thing on Abrams that teams trying to trade with SD have going for them, is the Padres have Fernando Tatis Jr, Jake Cronenworth, and Manny Machado in their infield. Is kind of a Yoan Moncada situation for me. Nobody thought he could be traded when he was, either. Twins maybe have to throw in something more than Berrios for him, but SD is trying to win a WS and they have the existing core for that already. Abrams, as highly rated as he is, isn't going to push them over.

I'd describe this as their minor league catcher depth being pretty lacking. But Garver isn't a FA until 2024, and Jeffers/Rortvedt/Astudillo are still all pre-arbitration. They're fine at catcher for the next 3+ years at the MLB level and Garver is proving to be an elite hitter at the position. For fun, trade chatter around Berrios with the Padres has Luis Campusano as a potential fit for part of the return (with Mackenzie Gore - who has had the yips for over a year now). Does he interest you at catcher if they were to deal Berrios? Personally, I'd want C.J. Abrams in a return from SD (that might be about all they get then, though) and don't think they need another catcher ready for the bigs, but Campusano is highly rated.

The hits just kept on coming for Minnesota Twins affiliates on the night, as the top two teams combined for 39 hits and 34 runs in a pair of blowout victories. A top prospect for another team also jacked a couple of home runs to stay hot since his return to the lineup. TRANSACTIONS The Minnesota Twins recalled RHP Beau Burrows from St. Paul in advance of their game with the Detroit Tigers LHP Lewis Thorpe was sent to the FCL Twins on a rehab assignment from the Saints. After signing with the Twins on July 20th, LHP Chris Nunn was assigned to the Wichita Wind Surge. The Wind Surge also received LHP Sean Gilmartin from the Complex. The Cedar Rapids Kernels released IF Yeltsin Encarnacion. The Twins released RHP Donny Breek from the FCL Twins. SAINTS SENTINEL Indianapolis 1, St. Paul 16 Box Score This one was seemingly over before the first inning finished as the Saints sent 11 men to plate in the opening inning, and eight of them crossed home plate. Rob Refsnyder and Jimmy Kerrigan did the bulk of that damage with home runs, while Jose Miranda and Drew Maggi added doubles in the onslaught. They continued the run parade in the second inning, tacking on five more thanks to a 2-run double from Ben Rortvedt, an RBI single from JT Riddle, and the second home run of the game from Kerrigan. Starting pitcher Chandler Shepherd handled it from there, holding Indianapolis to just two hits and one walk in seven innings pitched. He struck out four and picked up his fifth win of the season. Robinson Leyer allowed the only Indianapolis run in the eighth on a solo homer and struck out one. Ian Gibaut finished off the blowout with a scoreless ninth, walking one and striking out one. Six of the nine hitters in the St. Paul lineup collected multiple hits, with Miranda (3-for-5, 2 R, 2B) and Kerrigan (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI) leading the way with three each. Maggi had two doubles on the game, and Mark Contreras continued his strong July (.957 OPS in 16 games) with a double and scored three runs. In addition to the sixteen total hits as a team, all nine batters scored at least one run, and they combined to go 8-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left only three men on base for the game. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 18, NW Arkansas 8 Box Score In a box score quirk I don’t recall seeing very often, if ever, the Wind Surge managed to score at least one run in every single inning of this game, including five of them with a crooked number. That resulted in another blowout victory as they improved to 42-31 on the season. Like their older brothers in triple-A, each hitter in the lineup scored at least one run, though Wichita one-upped their peers with seven hitters collecting multiple hits on the game. They were led by Spencer Steer who racked up five hits on the night, including three doubles and a triple. He also scored four runs and drove in four more. Chris Williams wasn’t that far behind, finishing 4-for-6 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and five RBI. B.J. Boyd (3-for-6, R, 2B, 4 RBI) and Leobaldo Cabrera (3-for-6, 3 R, HR, RBI, K) had three hits on the night as well. Trey Cabbage also hit his sixth home run with Wichita and 15th overall this season. With 23 hits as a team, you have to open the box score link above to appreciate how dominant the Wind Surge lineup was throughout this game. Chris Vallimont made the start and wasn’t as sharp as you’d like in such a game, but you don’t need to be great when your offense piles up runs as they did. He went four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks while racking up six strikeouts. Cole Sands came on for the fifth and went the next three innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk, striking out four. The recently-signed Chris Nunn made his organizational debut and went 1 2/3 innings. He worked around a walk with a pair of strikeouts for a scoreless eighth inning, but after three singles in the ninth, he was replaced by Joe Kuzia for the final out, a strikeout to punctuate the dominant win. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Wisconsin 2 Box Score Righthanded pitcher Louie Varland made his third start with the Kernels since his promotion and kept his ERA at a clean 0.00 in the "Midwest League" with another five strong innings. He allowed three hits, walked three, and struck out three while throwing 80 pitches (49 for strikes). While he was on the mound the Cedar Rapids lineup built him a 4-0 lead, mainly due to the loud bats of Edouard Julien and Matt Wallner, who each launched a home run in their three-run third inning. After Varland’s exit Breckin Williams (2/3 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 2 K) and Erik Manoah Jr. (1 1/3 IP, ER, BB, 2 K) let the Timber Rattlers close the gap to 4-2, but Zach Featherstone righted the ship with two scoreless innings to close out the game. He walked two, struck out five, and picked up his fifth save of the season in the process. Wallner added an insurance run in the top of the eighth with his second home run of the game that made the final score of 5-2. Since his return from the injured list, Wallner has gone 8-for-22 (.363) with four home runs in six games, and his OPS is up to 1.103 on the season with the Kernels. In addition to Wallner, Cedar Rapids got multiple hits from Jair Camargo (2-for-4, K) and Michael Helman (2-for-4, R, SB) in the victory. MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 7, Clearwater 1 Box Score The Mighty Mussels, like the Saints above, got the scoring started early in this one, putting up three runs in each of the first and second innings. In the first inning, it was a three-run blast from Will Holland, his sixth of the year, that got them going. In the second it was an RBI single from Ruben Santana, a sac fly off the bat of Misael Urbina, and a solo homer from Keoni Cavaco to account for the early 6-0 lead. That was more than enough for the Fort Myers pitching staff, as starter Sawyer Gipson-Long held the Clearwater lineup to just three hits in seven innings. His lone run allowed was unearned, and he struck out nine compared to just one walk on the night. At one point he retired 11 men in a row and also finished his outing strong, striking out the last two hitters he faced. Burnsville, MN native Aaron Rozek finished the final two innings by retiring all six hitters he faced, including one strikeout, to seal the victory. The Mussels got multiple hits in the game from Holland (2-for-5, R, HR, 3 RBI, 2 K) and Santana (2-for-4, R, 2B, RBI, K) COMPLEX CHRONICLES FCL Orioles Black 7, FCL Twins 6 Box Score The FCL Twins fought back from a 7-0 deficit but fell short, leaving the tying run 90-feet away in the bottom of the ninth. This was after Kala’i Rosario delivered a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth that closed the score to 7-6 with just one out. LaRon Smith got the Twins on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run blast, his fourth of the season. Alexander Pena delivered a two-run double in the seventh that made the score 7-4. Smith (2-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K, SB), Pena (2-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K), and Rubel Cespedes (2-for-2, 2 R, BB, SB) each collected two hits on the game. Lewis Thorpe was sent to the FCL Twins on a rehab assignment and started this one. He finished 2 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out three. Wilker Reyes surrendered the bulk of the damage in his 3 1/3 innings, being charged with five runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out three and recovered from the initial barrage to hold the Orioles scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings. Ramon Pineda delivered a scoreless seventh inning, and Samuel Perez finished the game for the Twins with a pair of one-two-three innings, including three K’s in the eighth. I'd echo the same. Was watching this game as I wrote the report. Gets lots of swings and misses with his fastball, noticeably inside the zone ones as well. Don't think it was his changeup but also had a pitch with good horizontal run (not any drop) that he stole strikes with. CB/SL more of a true 12/6 curve than a wipeout pitch, but he knows where to put it to get strikes and swings/K's. Locates everything well. At this point I'd be surprised if he doesn't debut with the Twins at some point this year as well.

The story heading into Tuesday’s minor league slate of games, was the recent pitching of top prospect Jordan Balazovic for the Wichita Wind Surge. You could say he was quite good again, but his continued dominance is not the only thing worth discussing on this night as three other affiliates came back late to win, one in particularly-improbable fashion. TRANSACTIONS The Minnesota Twins returned Griffin Jax back to St. Paul and assigned outfielders Rob Refsnyder and Kyle Garlick to the Saints on a rehab assignments. With the Kernels OF Matt Wallner was activated from the injured list and served as the DH, batting third in the lineup. RHP Landon Leach was assigned to Fort Myers from the FCL Twins. The Twins have signed RHP Eiker Huizi to a minor league contract. He had signed with the Mets in 2017 and spent two seasons pitching in the DSL. The Mets released him in October of 2020. The Venezuela native is 20 years old. SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 6, Omaha 4 Box Score The Saints and Storm Chasers had an early tilt, and it was a good one that was sent to extra innings to kick off this week’s six-game series. Chandler Shepherd got the start for St. Paul and went five solid innings, allowing only one run on six hits and two walks while punching out six. Omaha got to reliever Yennier Cano in his two innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out three. Kyle Barraclough delivered a scoreless eighth inning. He walked the first two batters of the ninth inning, but Andrew Vasquez came on and gave the Saints lineup the chance they were looking for. He got a fielder's choice, a strikeout and a ground out to send the game to extra innings. Down 4-3 with two outs in the ninth, Drew Maggi stepped to the plate and was not going to let his team lose. He clubbed his 10th home run of the season to tie the game at four and send it to extra innings. After Vasquez held the home team in check with a scoreless ninth, Jose Miranda was quick to give St. Paul the lead with a one-out double in the tenth to score the extra runner. The rehabbing Kyle Garlick added an RBI single later in the inning to give the Saints the 6-4 lead. Ian Hamilton shut down the Storm Chasers in the bottom half, walking one and striking out two in the process of recording his second save. In the top of the first inning, Rob Refsnyder, also rehabbing with the Saints, hit a home run to right center. Jose Miranda (2-for-5, 2 R, 2B, RBI, K) and Jake Cave (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K) had multiple hits. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 4, Arkansas 1 Box Score On the mound for Wichita on Tuesday was top pitching prospect Jordan Balazovic who was carrying a three-start and 18 2/3 inning scoreless streak into the game. He was also named the AA-Central Pitcher of the Week after a seven inning, one hit and 11 K outing in his last start. You could say he is locked in at this point. Balazovic extended his scoreless streak to 25 2/3 innings with another fantastic outing, picking up his third win of the season. He was efficient and dominant again, throwing 89 pitches, 63 for strikes (70.8%) to complete another seven inning, no-run start. He allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out six Arkansas hitters. During his streak, he has allowed just 10 hits and four walks and has racked up 30 strikeouts. It should not be long until he is pitching with the St. Paul Saints. His offense, and specifically Trey Cabbage, gave him more than enough run support in building a 4-0 lead heading to the ninth. Cabbage did most of that damage with an RBI double in the third inning, and then insurance in the eighth with an absolutely mammoth two-run home run. The Arkansas broadcast remarked that it left his bat at 114 MPH and travelled 461 feet. “Goodness…” was an apt description, play-by-play guy. Reliever Zach Neff came on for the eighth inning and worked around a single and walk for a scoreless frame, but was not able to keep the Travelers off the board in the ninth. In his 1 1/3 innings Neff was charged with one run on two hits and two walks. He struck out one. Jordan Gore was summoned for the final two outs, and though he gave up a single that scored a run, got a strikeout and a long fly ball for the third out to pick up his first save with the Wind Surge. Roy Morales (3-for-5, 2B, 3B, RBI) and D.J. Burt (2-for-4, 2B, K) also collected multiple hits in the win. KERNELS NUGGETS Beloit 3, Cedar Rapids 4 Box Score The Snappers and Kernels traded leads a few times throughout this one, but neither team was able to break through for a big inning. Tyler Beck made the start for Cedar Rapids and scattered eight hits over his five innings, allowing just two runs along with striking out seven. Derek Molina (2 IP, H, 4 K), Melvi Acosta (1 1/3 IP, H, R, 3 K), and Zach Featherstone combined for four innings of one run ball, striking out nine and walking none. That was enough to keep the Kernels in the driver’s seat after the Snappers tied it at three in the top of the ninth. They took little time to end it in the bottom half, as Jair Camargo led off the inning with a bunt single, then Michael Helman drove in pinch runner Daniel Ozoria all the way from first with a walk-off double. Helman said humbly after the game that he just wanted to move the runner along. "I got the opportunity to at least try to move the runner and put a guy in scoring position. It somehow kept the ball fair down the line. Luckily Ozoria is fast." Matt Wallner made his return from the injured list as the designated hitter. In his second at-bat he clubbed his fifth home run of the season (has played only 18 games). Camargo finished 2-for-4 with his 13th home run and two RBI. DeShawn Keirsey collected his third triple of the year and stole two bases. MUSSEL MATTERS Daytona 7, Fort Myers 8 Box Score The Mighty Mussels fell behind 7-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but with some help from the Tortugas bullpen and on brand for Twins affiliates on the day, were able to come all the way back and steal this one on Tuesday night. Aaron Rozek made the start for Fort Myers and went seven innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits but also struck out eight batters. Carlos Suniaga came on in relief and after two strikeouts, gave up a single and a home run that made any comeback seem that much more improbable for the home team. Then the back end of the Daytona Bullpen happened. The bottom of the eighth went groundout, walk, walk, hit batter, walk, pitching change, walk, single, passed ball, walk, walk and before you knew it, six runs had crossed the plate for Fort Myers, and they had taken the lead 8-7. Warming up quickly, closer Denny Bentley slammed the door shut on the Tortugas with a one-two-three ninth inning on just eight pitches, including a three-pitch strikeout to end the game with authority. He picked up his seventh save of the season. Misael Urbina went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI out of the leadoff spot. The Mighty Mussels had just three other hits as a team, but were able to take advantage of a bulk of their 12 walks in that eighth inning. Jeferson Morales, Aaron Sabato, and Ruben Santana each drew three of those walks. A couple of major leaguers were activated for rehab assignments with the St. Paul Saints, but it was a different slugger with major league experience who stole the show at CHS Field on Tuesday night. There were also several big innings from lineups across the system on the night, and even a no-hitter rookie leagues (that asterisk in the title is for a reason, but the scorebook says what the scorebook says!). TRANSACTIONS Catcher Mitch Garver was sent on a rehab assignment to the St. Paul Saints. Good to see him back on the field after his freaky injury. Jake Cave was also activated for a rehab assignment with the Saints. LHP Kody Funderburk and RHP Jordan Gore were promoted from Cedar Rapids to Wichita. LHP Aaron Rozek was assigned to the Mighty Mussels from the Wind Surge, and RHP Jason Garcia was placed on the 7-day injured list. Taking the place of the departing pitchers from Cedar Rapids were RHP Osiris German and RHP Louie Varland from Fort Myers. In addition to Rozek the Mighty Mussels also were assigned RHP Orlando Rodriguez. SAINTS SENTINEL Columbus 1, St. Paul 19 Box Score With Jake Cave, Mitch Garver, Brent Rooker, and Willians Astudillo in the lineup for the Saints on Tuesday, this one played out just like you might expect when putting a lineup of major leaguers out against one of minor leaguers. St. Paul bludgeoned Columbus pitching early with three runs in the first then four more in the third before exploding for 10 runs in the fourth. When they needed a hit, they got them, and big ones in bunches too. Cave led off the game with a homer and Rooker hit another blast in the first. Rooker and Mark Contreras each went yard in the third. Then Rooker again, and Jose Miranda took one out of the park in the big fourth inning. The lineup got multiple hits from Miranda (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, K), Rooker (4-for-6, 4 R, 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 2 K), Contreras (2-for-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K), and JT Riddle (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI). Cave and Rooker each scored four runs. As a team St. Paul was 9-for-13 (.692) with runners in scoring position and left only five men on base. In addition to their 14 hits and six walks, five hitters were hit by pitches leading to their runs outpacing hits for the game. Righthander Griffin Jax took the mound for the Saints and went the first five innings, working efficiently. He allowed one run (solo homer) on three hits. He did not walk or strike out a batter, and threw just 63 pitches with 40 going for strikes (63.5%). Reliever Juan Minaya came on for the sixth inning and finished the next three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits, one walk, and struck out four. Joe Harvey finished off the game with a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and punching out two. WIND SURGE WISDOM Tulsa 7, Wichita 2 Box Score Wichita got on the board first in this one when Trey Cabbage clubbed his third home run of the season, a two run-shot in the second inning. But that was all the offense they would muster on the night as the lineup managed just two other hits on the game. They had only one at-bat with a runner in scoring position and left only two men on base for the game. There is not much you can if you never have the opportunities. Righthander Austin Schulfer got the start for the Wind Surge and went five solid innings. He allowed three earned runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out six. Jovani Moran went the next 1 2/3 and was not his usual knife through butter self, being charged with one run on one hit and three walks, though he still did strike out four. Zach Neff came on gave up three runs of his own in 1+ innings. He allowed four hits and struck out one. Jhonleider Salinas finished the game off for the Wind Surge with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out two. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 8, South Bend 5 Box Score The Kernels too, got on the board early and then often in a single inning on Tuesday as they put up three runs in the first then a five-spot in the fourth that put them ahead 8-1 at the time. The three runs in the first came courtesy of Seth Gray’s seventh home run of the season. The lineup got multiple hits from Gray (3-for-6, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, K), Wander Javier (2-for-5, R, 2B, BB, 2 K), and Edouard Julien (2-for-5, R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K). Julien’s 2-RBI single in the fourth inning capped the scoring for Cedar Rapids and he continues to lead the minors in walks while sporting a .475 on-base percentage across two levels. The eight runs were more than enough to pick up the win as the pitching staff held strong enough as South Bend attempted a comeback. Starter Cody Laweryson went the first four innings for the Kernels, allowing a single earned run on three hits and two walks while punching out six. Tyler Palm allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in his single inning. Ryan Shreve was credited the win after his two innings where he allowed one run on two hits and struck out two. Zach Featherstone pitched the final two innings, allowing a run of his own on one hit and two walks while striking out three. The Kernels improved to 35-26 on the year and are firmly in second place of the Midwest League West Division. MUSSEL MATTERS Jupiter 10, Fort Myers 12 Box Score Fort Myers jumped out to a beg early lead after an eight run second inning, but struggled to keep that lead for the rest of the game and it turned into a back-and-forth contest late. Willie Joe Garry Jr. got the scoring started in the second with a two-RBI single. Misael Urbina followed two batters later with a grand slam that made it 6-1. A Jeferson Morales double and Jesus Feliz single would plate the other two runs in the frame. Starter Brent Headrick went four innings in total, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks, while striking out six. Matthew Swain came out for the fifth inning but was not able to get out of it before being charged with four runs on three walks. He struck out one. With two in the fifth Carlos Suniaga was summoned and went the next 2 1/3 scoreless innings, keeping the Mighty Mussels within one going into the bottom of the seventh. They were able to tie it at nine thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Ruben Santana, but gave it right back in the top of the eighth. Righthander Bradley Hanner came into the game and gave up consecutive single to start the inning, that resulted in a run as the first hitter stole second and reached third on a throwing error. Now down 10-9, Fort Myers would not give up. Yunior Severino delivered an RBI sac fly in the bottom of the eighth after Aaron Sabato reached base on an error and moved to third on a double from Morales. Feliz then put them up by one with an RBI single and executed a double steal with Justin Washington for another run to make it 12-10 in favor of the home team. Back out front for the top of the ninth, the Mighty Mussels brought on Denny Bentley to close out the win. A one out walk and single made it a little interesting, but Bentley buckled down and struck out the final two hitters (and all three outs in the inning) to end the game and pick up his fifth save. In addition to Morales and Feliz, Washington (2-for-4, R, 3B, K, SB) and Santana (2-for-2, R, RBI, 3 BB, SB) also multiple hits on the game. COMPLEX CHRONICLES Game 1: FCL Braves 5, FCL Twins 1 Box Score The FCL Twins played a doubleheader with their Atlanta Braves counterpart on Tuesday afternoon, and they each picked up a victory. In game one the Twins were outhit 8-5 and were not able to mount any rallies in losing 5-1. Alexander Pena led the way with a 2-for-3 effort including a double. Kala’I Rosario picked up the only RBI. Starter John Stankiewicz went the first two innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while recording all of his outs via the strikeout (six total). Wilker Reyes went the next four innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks. Cole Bellair finished the game with an unearned run on two walks in the seventh, striking out one. Game 2: FCL Twins 8, FCL Braves 0 Box Score The Twins got back at the Braves in game two behind a no-hitter from their starting pitcher. The caveat here is even in the normally shortened 7-inning game of a doubleheader, only 5+ innings were completed in this one as lightning moved into the area. The Twins scored two in the first and six in the second to account for all their runs. Rosario had two more RBI in this one thanks to a double. Catcher LaRon Smith had three RBI and his second home run of the season. Pena (2-for-4, R, RBI) and Miguel Vallejo (2-for-2, R, 2 2B) had multiple hits. As a team they were 7-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left just six on base for the game. Pitcher Giovahniey German went five innings and walked just two while striking out four. Quite a performance for the 20-year-old in just his third game pitching in the states! Goes down as a no-hitter in the scorebook no matter who is reading it, congratulations!
