  1. I voted for Mudcat Grant because I watched and enjoyed him in the old days of Twins baseball, but reading the list, looking at the length of time as a Twin and the actual accomplishments makes me think that this local HOF needs to take a break. Maybe a vote every three or five years is enough. The players on this list gave us some good memories - HOF???
  2. I believe Escobar has signed so we will and should keep him. I would be fine with dropping everyone else and seeing who could fill those spots.
  3. Just looked him up and it made me chuckle - a hitting coach with a terrible batting record - http://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.cgi?id=rowson001jam reminds me of how many lousy players become great managers (Earl Weaver) and how many mediocre pitchers become great pitching coaches. Is it the struggle that borderline players have to survive that forces them to pay attention to the details that great players can bypass? Good luck to Mr. Rowson, I hope he is a miracle worker because he has some really good bats to work with on this roster.
  4. Let's just construct a roster of all DH/1B - score dozens of runs and get a team ERA in double figures. Sorry but Castro can't frame enough suspect strikes to offset a team that plays without gloves. If Mauer is going, Napoli can fill in, but we know that is not going to happen. If we were close to contending it might be a good move, but didn't we just hire three ex-Twins attitude guys to substitute for the veteran presence? And don't we have veterans in Mauer, Castro, Dozier, Hughes, Perkins? And I like Napoli, but not for this team unless he has hidden talents as a pitcher.
  5. This may be true, but I prefer the back of many other teams rosters over this mix. I also remember some memorable players in past arbitration situations and the Twins usually signed them early.
  6. Somehow it feels like the Twins forgot what they used to emphasize - defense, pitching, and smart plays. The old piranhas were fun to watch. But now the team needs the new front office to set a direction and stay with it. Reject 20 points in BA for a terrible fielder. Put players where they should be. I have low expectations from Castro. I guess I am too old school and think that good pitchers make catchers look good.
  7. Nice article. It keeps coming back to the minors - lots of great prospects, but are we getting the maximum out of the system.
  8. The test of the Twins new front office is to have a list like this in the future look like players every team would want, not just fillers for the poorest team in baseball. The level these players represent is the fifth starter, bottom of the bullpen, and last seat on the bench, but for now the questions are - do we have anyone better? Are they blocking a prospect? If not sign them and start the trade packages and planning for the future.
  9. I guess this headline demonstrates the desperation of Minnesota baseball. We sign an average catcher and bring back three old Twins (by the way they cannot play anymore) and we think that the Twins are off to new horizons while the Phillies hire our old GM to be a scout. Its been a long dry spell and I will celebrate my solstice fire for the increase in daylight, but not yet for the resurgence of the Twins.
  10. So we complete the trade - Pat Dean for Park! Who wins?
  11. I can live with this, what choice is there, but this is not exciting or even very interesting. Who teaches pitching and hitting? Who is on the roster? What free agents? What philosophy. Having nice guys around is fine, but I will not see them on the field and therefore can hardly get emotional. If they have the money to bring the old guys back that is wonderful, do they have the money to bring in winners?
  12. My fear is that he is now entering the age when catchers regress and we are on the hook for three years. 2017 is not the year we contend and by 2018 regression might be a factor. I hope I am wrong.
  13. Yuch - nothing inspiring here. When do Catchers regress? I think we have another Suzuki in years two and three. What is the trade off between framing and hitting? I hope the rest of you are really excited because this does nothing for me.
  14. Great evaluation of the statistics. This breakdown is really significant and really points out the problems we have as we take a single formula to be the most important evaluation tool. A defense does change according to pitchers. Weak contact makes it easier to field. Fewer hard hit balls make it easier to field. The defense of any team varies depending upon the pitcher and in this case the variation is out of the bounds of acceptable statistics.
  15. I like the expanded rosters - we have it in September, lets put more players on the bench, accommodate the growing bullpens and then limit September to 2 or 3 call ups. The big change is something Neil Allen is advocating. A consistent preparation of players from signing to majors. Prepare them, measure their health, establish techniques and habits that make the transition to MLB easier. Get the young players on TV - give them exposure like the NBA and NFL - the future is in marketing. Mexico City? Really, you know you would have to live there part of the year if you played there.
  16. I like the idea. We fantasize over May as a starter, but in fact his record there is not sterling. We love him as a reliever, but he has a sequence of blow ups that make us shake our heads. I think the team needs to take some of the blame. Tell him what he is going to be and stick with it. If it is the new two inning reliever then stick with that plan.
  17. I would love to see a chart with your top picks and where they rank with all the other lists that you are sharing.
  18. No to Johann. Move on. Old Twins are one thing - OLD and we do not need them.
  19. Good luck to Plouffe and Walker I hope they both have great careers and that we regret releasing them, but at the same time, way to go Twins, I am delighted to see some risk taking.
  20. We are in a new world - I know all that has been written about Plouffe, but I did not see him being released this early in the process! I am hoping that we regret Adam Bret Walker. I think we have underestimated his ability and it would be great to see him break out and prove the team wrong. Good luck Adam.
  21. Just give him a bat, I do not care about anything else. I am fine with him at DH. What we do with Park, Vargas, Walker...that's more of a mystery.
  22. Bring in Garver and move on. Did you see the list and their stats and profiles. What improvement do any of them bring. They are hardly better hitters than Murphy was last year. Get our young catchers in and let them mature. It is not like the young players that we have are teenagers - their clocks are ticking too. But the bottom rung of catchers is too far down the list to waste any time in my estimation.
  23. I do not see reality in this. The projections are based on what? Let Buxton continue to grow, give him next year to figure out the system and move forward, then project. For now I would give a gut reaction that the BA is too low, that the CB has not really figured out how to project a player like this.
  24. No, No, No. Work with what we have. If they are not good enough sign someone when there are better options and we are a better team.
  25. Buxton - we started to see the uptick at the end and if he can be the player that we have expected for the last two years it will be a great move forward. Hughes and Perkins - if either of them comes back to what they were we will have added quality without doing anything but waiting.
