  1. I am intrigued by Granite, the way we are always intrigued by the second string QB. I do not know which of the outfielders I would replace with Granite - all are flawed. Buxton is in for Defense, but his bat still stinks and it is getting to be a long stretch of Mendoza line offense, Rosario has some power when he gets stirred up, but no plate discipline and a reduced defensive value, while Kepler comes in waves of good with lots of time in between. It might be our outfield of the future, but I do not thing those three would rank high if there was an outfield ranking for all the teams.
  2. Belisle is terrible and it is more than the eye test - 30.1 innings pitched - 33 hits and 17 walks giving up 26 runs (with relief pitchers I do not care if the runs are earned or unearned) and 18.8% of inherited base runners scored. And a 6.53 era. Move on. Our other slick veteran reliever - Breslow - only has a 5.28 era. 29 innings pitched with 34 hits and 10 walks! And these are the best of the numerous pitchers that the team has added this year. Would we have been worse off if we had just rotated through minor leaguers? We DFA Melatokis and keep these guys?
  3. All I want from our players is - fast enough. If they are stealing then they need to beat the throw, if a player is on base they need to beat the DP and get home. Fast is one measurement, but success is the most important.
  4. One of the stats that just can't be corrected -Berrios had runners on, but was not allowed to get out of the inning (an inning he should not have pitched) and then we bring in Belisle - hit and walk - but no outs. Belisle gets credit for no earned runs, just an appearance and thus Berrios adds to his ERA since these players pushed the probability of the inherited runners scoring. Thus Belisle will continue to look better than a record that looks bad already. Belisle has been a mistake signing. My relief pitchers have more up and down years than most starters and his signing may have looked good in the off season, but it's time for him to move out of the way for better prospects.
  5. Go young. We are building a team and all the dumpster grabs we have made this year have not been the reason we are having a good year. It must be something in the Minnesota air that has us continually looking out to find old Twins to bring back.
  6. Bring them up. Imagine what we might have today if we could have had starts that did not belong to Wilks, Tepesch, and Turley, but one one of these three. We might have lost all those games, but we might also have a starter in the rotation who we could see as a long term addition to Berrios and Santana.
  7. Nice essay. Sometimes we have to go back to the old scout format and look away from the metrics. The question is - is he doing his job - answer - yes. The second question is - do we have anyone better for the role? Answer - No. Go Kintzler. You are doing the job and we are winning. Your time will come, but for now, lets enjoy the ride.
  8. I just came back from Marquette, MI and this game entertained me for most of the ride from Ashland home. What fun. This is baseball at its most enjoyable. I did expect an implosion many times, but Santana squirmed out of harm each inning
  9. I'm not in much to take away from this four game series. I'm not worried about the hitting but the pitching gives me no hope Gibson can claim a moral victory but we need pictures who Step Up in the big games
  10. Busenitz - good call up. He deserved it. So does Curtiss and a few more, but Wimmers? What is the affection they have with Wimmers?
  11. When I look at our team entering a four game series with Cleveland - the team we are fighting for first place and the rotation is Turley, Wilks, Mejia, and Gibson I am frustrated. When you only have two good starters - Berrios and Santana - they cannot go in every series, but this is no way to tackle the potentially best team in the division. I am hoping for standout performances far above their norms because we need a split from this series.
  12. The minor leagues are where we need to look and I will be happy when the FO turns off the waiver (dumpster) wire and starts finding out who we have in our own system. At 26 we should get players up or out. Reading the minor league summaries I cannot figure out why Rosario is the only one given a chance.
  13. As I read these posts I can only think about the Twins choices for starting this weekend against Cleveland - Wilks and Turley against the team that we are trying to hold off for first place. Something seems wrong here. Okay Turley deserves a second chance, but couldn't they have arranged starts so that one of our other young pitchers could have taken Wilks place?
  14. Wilks? No is my response - give one of our young guys a chance. What is the love affair with waiver wire pitchers?
  15. I really enjoy these game summaries. Thanks for doing these reports.
  16. I have a hard time with the draft because MLB has such a long delay before the satisfaction of seeing a person in MLB keeps us from really judging a draft for three years. So I wanted to see what to use for judging the draft and found this slightly old article http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1219356-examining-the-percentage-of-mlb-draft-picks-that-reach-the-major-leagues and it was constructive. The first 5 rounds give us a 33% and more chance of success in the majors. The last half of the draft is a collective 7% which means that those picks fill the minor league rosters and you hope for a surprise. So we ended up with SS, 3B, OF and three pichers in the high end of the draft. Now I will follow Seth's reports and hope for the best.
  17. You took my response - good for you - we have a curve ball terror in Duffey. Everything says curve balls are the most important pitch in this era and the draft confirmed that. So why is Duffey in the pen and not in the rotation? Why aren't we continuing to develop him as a starter. It can't be because Gibson, Mejia, and Santiago are all sensational.
  18. I think the Twins organization knows the talents and has them ranked by major league potential. I say take the highest potential for MLB with one exception when your system has an obvious weakness then shade the choices if you have a good option to fill a need. For most of us - especially me - I have know idea who these players are that they are choosing so I have to go by the ratings of TD, Law, and other services. They are not perfect but they give us some idea. When I look at positions pitcher is number one, just like QB in the NFL and you shade to that side. What I do not like to hear is that we are drafting someone because we can save money for later rounds. There is something special about the number one over all and with luck you will never have that pick again, so go for the potential gold. Yes players like Appel prove that #1 overall is not a sure thing, but if there is a potential for superstardom on the staff this is where it might be. The money saved on the signing of some agreeable player will not equal the eventual cost of signing the ACE. The potential for MLB in the last 20 rounds is 7% according to the stats accumulated over previous drafts so the fact that we have taken 11 pitchers in the bottom of the draft simply means we might be lucky, but expect to have full minor league rosters. It is only in the top 5 rounds that teams have historically gotten 33% of the choices to the majors. We may have been exceptionally good in our picks, I cannot tell and we will not know for three years, but I have not liked some of the comments I have read surrounding the picks.
  19. I know there are lots of theories - mine is simple. Pick the best player you can get and put emphasis on the places your system is weak in. That is it. Wish I could give you lots of metrics, but I just want the best nine players we can put on the field at the same time.
  20. I like the idea of not going to pitch for contact guys and I am glad you are speaking up for them, but I am looking at Gibson, Santiago, and the cast of visiting Twins pitchers that have been brought in and I am still seeing the same old routine, lots of base hits, very few strike outs.
  21. Day two and we are with players I have no ideas about, but the highest pitcher in this group sounds like our basic MN Twins pitch to contact guy - "Barnes won't overpower hitters, but is a crafty left-hander with a plus-changeup"
  22. I have no issue with Castro versus a very over rated Weiters and a recovering Ramos, but that is not my point. He was a starting point for improvement and not the end point. Not enough was done and our bullpen and rotation keeps proving it.
  23. Great fielder - no doubt, great player - no way. Ozzie was a great fielder and a poor batter, but he hit .26., .337, 328. When Byron approaches those stats we can give him star status, but not yet.
  24. Sorry, but this feels like the new FO was trying to demonstrate how smart they are and I think they got outsmarted. With all the quality shortstops at a young age, maybe we are going to package them and trade for a top of the line starter. I feel no compunction to go easy and be patient with the FO. At this stage the Breslow, Belisle, Wilf, Heston, Giminez, Castro moves are not that impressive and neither is the draft. After the last six years the last thing that the team should expect is patience. It is their job to prove to us that they know what they are doing. The players that are making a difference this year are from TR and Bill Smith.
  25. I posted in another spot my frustration with this pick - From Gordon to Javier there are six good SS in the system and all young. So we saved some money under the slot - big deal - how much will we need to acquire an Ace pitcher in a few years? Number two fills a need, number 3 is probably a number three starter. This was our chance to really reach for a potential star (I know there are no guarantees) but we will now play with lower picks (hopefully forever) and I would have been much more excited to think we took the real opportunity to reach for the heights.
