  1. I am going to out on a limb and predict his speech will not contain any reference to how his wife fills out a T-shirt. The recent Trib interview was nice. I remember him saying once, he felt he missed a lot of his daughters first few years. He seems pretty determined to be there now. His celebrating his 40th birthday at the kid's end of school pizza party and his coaching goal is for kids to have fun and want to return and play the next year seemed pretty classic Mauer.
  2. My memory is a little rusty, but even in 2019, weren't there signs later in the season that the Bomba squad mentality was starting to show some signs that it was becoming less effective and not a sustainable strategy. I know people were ready to move on from Mauer but there have been a few times since 2019 where I wish they had a batter or two like him who could drive up a pitch count during one of his bats. They could use a Luis Arráez right now.
  3. Sounds like the radio is a bit behind -- I still had hope and then saw some of the above posts...
  4. if you can't trust the best Twins pitcher in 2013 - who can you trust. Semi-related - I saw they are discontinuing the DVD service -- was kind of surprised they still had the DVD service. Damn... (you can do some mild swearing on the threads depending on who the monitor is).
  5. Broten just dropped by the radio booth with Hrbeck and Jack Morris - although he stayed away from the mics.
  6. I wonder if he gets angry or confused when he sees the Disney movies or if kept waiting for the birds to come blind the stepsisters in Cinderella.
  7. I feel at one time this could have been a Leslie Nielsen movie, although probably his later movies and not in his Airplane/Naked Gun prime. I just watched Rings of Power. It had its flaws, but I thought it was entertaining when all was said and done. However, my Middle Earth Second Age knowledge is a little rusty, and I was not going to notice if one of the plot developments was not true to a footnote in Lord of the Rings or a passage in one of Tolkien's unfinished works or note. I don't think the people more immersed in the Tolkien world were exactly happy about it.
  8. I won tickets in the company box suite - the only time I submitted my name to win tickets (why do I not do that more?). Usually when you are those suites most people not paying attention to the game. All the windows were open and am surprised no one fell out everyone was so glued to the game. By far the best game I have ever seen in person. Who could not have predicted that Casila would have the hit to send the team into the play-offs.
  9. Going to be a rough day for some with the Twins Hall of Fame announcement. Not there are not about a million other milestones with his kids where he will miss his Dad more, but too bad Jake did not get to see this (the Twins Hall of Fame -- not Stu's article, although that as well).
  10. Are you suggesting that the next time Joe has to give a speech at Target Field he is not going to make comments how his wife filled out her shirt? I heard an interview of Trevor Plouffe somewhere where he was asked about Mauer and he said he was closet hysterical, He also said you assume him being that nice is somewhat an act when you meet him and then at some point you realize, he is that nice. I probably err on the side of being too much of a Mauer homer, but I will still see internet comments or tweets about a sports event and someone manages to bring up Mauer's contract or bilateral weakness. I want to say, it might be time to let it go and move on.
  11. I think the real issue for the traffic back-up, is that the motorcade would not go faster than five miles below the speed limit, would not run any yellow lights, and would stop traffic anytime an old lady wanted to cross the street.
  12. And egocentric celebrities like Mauer who inconvenience everyone by closing down the Dairy Barn for hours so he and his entourage can have it all to themselves as he drinks his milk from a crystal champagne glass.
  13. Didn't the person giving him the award call him Jason? 2014 - not a great year for the Twins in general, but fond memories of Perk closing out the Mpls All-Star game with Kurt as his catcher.
  14. Yes - am through episode 6 and feel like in a way they put her through the same motions/emotions/expressi....ons every season. It is odd that they did not do much with him after season 1, since his character really triggered much of the action at the show's start and from the scenes they do give him he seems like a good actor. I do have issues of how good Suzie's internet connection was in 1986...
  15. or in the case of Jonathan - now middle-aged. I agree that I do not think they really know what to do with him and Mike any longer. The cast has grown and they probably could cycle off some of the characters who have been played out. I have enjoyed the new season (I am through episode 4) and it might be the creepiest yet. Although I might be biased because I preferred Freddie to Jason as my favorite serial killer back in the day. As much as I liked Hopper, I think I might have jettisoned his story and just focused on what is going on in Hawkins. Back in season 1, I thought El was a great child actor, and she is not horrible now, but think the actress who plays Max might be the MVP so far and have a bit more subtly in some of her acting choices. I have not gotten to Obi Wan yet (or really about the last three Star Wars/Marvel series, but it is on my list. I think Loki might be the last thing I watched, which might mean it is time to evaluate keeping the service. Although I have been watching the original Muppet Show.
  16. I am guessing Mauer once he is eligible (is it five years off of the team?). I don't have an issue with any of the inductees, but they are going to run into some dry years, and as someone mentioned above, I wonder if they should have spread them out over three years..
  17. I don't have cable, so do not have ESPN etc. Is this being covered heavily there? Maybe I have missed it, but this seems to be hardly covered in the regular news, and spring training is not that far away. If this was football, I feel like it would be a bigger story outside the sports channels.
  18. This might be the most exciting upgrade since the arrival of the mouse -- congrats on the update.
  19. 1980 Miracle on Ice. Not technically a MN event, but since Minnesota claims any connection (they adopted a pet who was born in Minnesota) and the team did actually have a strong Minnesota presence. It was probably one of the biggest things from my home town to have someone on the team including big celebrations when he returned to town. Strange to think that night we were not even watching the game live, since it had played that afternoon, but the results had not leaked out. Cannot imagine that happening now. The championship against Finland was actually on Sunday morning (we almost late for my sister's confirmation - a lot of people walking in last minute).
  20. I have to say this shows you have a wide range in what you like to watch. I am guessing not a lot of cross over of actors appearing in both shows.
  21. Not quite the same thing, but my company did tell people to take Juneteenth off even though it was not a regular day off for us. They wanted people to take the day off and volunteer or reflect at what was happening and the on-going issues that had created the situation or simply use as a mental health day to deal with all the stress that was happening at the time. I am sure some of it was a calculated PR move, but there have been what I take are sincere efforts to spot light things that go under the radar for a lot of us and highlight things that people of color have to thing about that would not even occur to me. They had a number of employees candidly speak on what it is like to be the only person of color on a team or on a project or even in some offices, as well as warnings they have to give their kids if they ever get pulled over or how they can spot a clerk watching them when they are in a nice store etc. Obviously, this is not going to solve all of the problems, but it is generating some additional discussion, and maybe some of the athlete's statements will make this seem more like a real issue to people who do not experience it. I do realize I am lucky in that I could just take a day off, not everyone is in a situation where they can do that or has a job where that is feasible.
  22. I remember thinking that things were going to go from bad to disaster when they got rid of Dozier and others basically calling it a season, and then being pleasantly surprised when the actually seemed to get better and finished the last third of the season by playing respectfully. I thought the wheels would come completely off of the bus, but the remaining players kept on playing as if they had a chance. Mauer's "unofficial" retirement really did pack an emotional punch that a lot formal retirement celebrations have (esp. when they are drawn out for a full season) and doing it that way was very Mauer (even though he says otherwise, I suspect he knew that was his last game and was that he would retire in the off-season). Although he did basically get the official celebration when they retired his number the next year.
  23. I am watching a couple of things on Netflix that might be targeted more for a much younger demographic ... Derry Girls -- I cannot decide if it is really clever/good or really stupid/bad (I think it might be really good), but it does make me laugh (as comedies of 1990's Northern Ireland strife tend to do). Locke and Key -- about half way through and it is so far has some suspenseful and creepy moments. Hopefully, it will have a stronger home-stretch than Hill House. A show probably not aimed at the tween set -- I am resuming my rewatch of the first season of Cheers. I suspect it will be pulled at some point when NBC's streaming service is in full pay mode. I loved Coach when I watched as a kid, and still do, but in retrospect, Woody might have been a funnier character (Harrelson did develop into a pretty good actor and might have been able to do more with the one-note of the character).
  24. I am somewhat bitter about Picard being on CBS Access. I have three streaming services already (Hulu, Amazon, Netflix), and don't want to add another one, but would love to watch Picard and I heard the second season of Star Trek Discovery was pretty good. Maybe if I dropped Hulu or Netflix, but I was already thinking of doing that if I decided to get Disney Plus. Sadly, I don't think the trend of each studio or network wanting their content on their own streaming service is going to end. Anyone watch The Good Place? I did not think the last couple of seasons were as good as the first two, but I thought they really nailed the series finale. It was one of the best wrapping up of a series I have seen (although I could see people either loving or hating it).
