    Too bad we don't get to play awful KC and the Cleveland MASH unit every day. Was excited to see how we matched up against a good team. Not so good, I guess.

    At some point they don't want to put their milb staffs in a judgement call situation. Everywhere in life has these arbitrary lines, everywhere. Is someone who is 17 years and 364 days old less competent to vote than someone a day older? Of course not. But what is the alternative? Every polling station makes their best judgment call on who looks mature enough to vote? Is 55 mph safe, while 56 is reckless? Are 10 items few enough to breeze through the express checkout, but 11 would grind it to a halt? Obviously not, but it's more efficient than telling every cashier to just pick and choose who can use that checkout. The FO can't be in constant contact with every milb staff during every inning of every game. In general, they don't want pitchers throwing too many pitches in one stressful inning. Of course 35 pitches has little significant difference from 34 or 36, but the alternative, trying to be involved in a judgment call every time across multiple levels all playing games every day would be just as silly. I guess I don't understand what the controversy is. What would your policy be if you were in charge of the organization?

    Those were both AA, they played a doubleheader.

    Well I guess I'm hopeful that they aren't making important decisions based off a few spring training innings.

    Every game counts. The games now count the same as the ones after his theoretical call up. I guess I was under the impression that you were theorizing that they moved him to the bullpen to help them compete. The fact that he's in the Rochester bullpen suggests to me the move is more about his development than it is to help the big club compete.

    They have to draw the line somewhere. Driving at .07 isn't much different than .08, but that's going to be the case no matter where they put the line. It's like a stop loss. Some people have a set maximum they they'll allow themselves to lose when they go to the casino. Losing 499 dollars isn't materially different than losing 500.

    Jason Castro is a significantly better hitter than Sandy Leon. 60 points of OPS is a huge margin, especially at the catcher position. The only thing Leon and Castro have in common is that they are both catchers. I'm not advocating to trade Castro, I'd also keep him. But he would fetch a decent return.

    MLB Pipeline has a 50 grade for Wade's arm, compared to a 45 grade for Raley's hit tool. So if Raley has 5 tools, then Wade has 4.

    He also didn't do himself any favors by walking Hamilton. I'd call the blame between him and his infield there a wash. Seriously, why would you ever nibble to a guy like Hamilton?

    That's not really fair though. Unless you're going to go back at the end of the season and also give him credit as hits the times he hits a rocket right at someone. Those and the gift hits even out over the season. The important thing is 1 K in 6 at bats. In what way does he look lost?

    A first time manager only gets one mulligan? Yikes. There is going to be a learning curve folks, he's going to make plenty of mistakes the first few weeks. Remember last year when Gabe Kepler's own players were calling him out early last season? Smart people eventually figure it out, and I think Baldelli will, but he's going to need a lot more than one mulligan in the meantime.

    I agree. I just think, based on statistical comparison to other catchers, that calling his bat "miserable" or "a liability" isn't fair analysis. I realize you didn't say that, but you quoted my post responding to those terms.

    Sure, but I was responding to a post claiming that he doesn't do his job in that specific situation. It may be a small sample size, but it's the entire sample size for his career in that specific situation.

    Maybe, but I'm not sure why anyone would even offer a milb deal. If you are going to bother stashing an insurance DH (yes, I know he technically can play 1B, but he shouldn't) at AAA, you'd better be sure he can actually mash. Maybe a little unusual, but he'll turn 32 during the season, and he didn't have enough of a track record to get the benefit of the doubt for last year. With DH guys like CJ Cron and (potentially later) Tyler Austin available on waivers, why bother with a 32 year old who looked completely cooked last year.

    Even if it's a few ticks below league average for starters, it's still not even close to low enough to be classified as "miserable" or "a liability". I guess some fans would rather we just put Nelson Cruz back there? Outside of a handful at a time in the league, catchers don't hit.

    His career OPS with a runner at 3rd base and less than 2 outs is .913, higher than any other bases occupied/unoccupied situation. He's driven in 78 runs in 132 such opportunities. Without taking the time to look at a large sample size of players, that seems like a pretty good success rate.

    No, he didn't. I'd imagine it's quite possible his career is over. Can't imagine anyone would have interest in a 31 year old DH coming off a 73 OPS+ season.

    A .695-ish OPS is neither miserable, nor a liability for a catcher. It's right around league average.

    Why on earth would a DH need days off? I mean, maybe in the middle of 20 straight, just to reset mentally. But, there are plenty of built in off days early in the season.

    I wish you'd stop speaking for everyone. I was on board the Sanchez signing from the start, thought it was a great signing, and was disappointed when he was let go.
