  1. The crappy starting pitching would certainly inflate the actual number of inherited runners scored, but I fail to see how it would affect the %. This bullpen is overrated. While I won't go as far as to say that ERA has no value as far as bullpens go, I think it is near the bottom of the list.
  2. Yeah, if they are going to replace him with someone from within the organization, then it's pointless to even fire him. It's the philosophy that is outdated and flawed. Simply bumping up the next guy in line changes absolutely nothing, IMO.
  3. That seems to conflict with your documented posts claiming that Terry Ryan will spend money on starting pitching this offseason, and that he knows the time is now and will make some big moves. And if you do believe that he will not sign any significant pieces in FA, that seems to conflict with your documented belief that "the parade starts in 2014". Do you truly think that a bunch of prospects all at AA or A are going to suddenly take us from zero to hero in one season, with no hiccups along the way, especially when many of our top prospects are not even expected to be up until late 2014, if at all?
  4. What if you were given an adequate budget to build an Indy car, but instead pocketed that money and decided to enter the race with your Impala instead? Do you still blame the car, or do you blame the guy in charge of building a competitive car?
  5. Well, unfortunately Nick, Terry Ryan's most recent comments do not offer any hope that you may be right. Ryan has all but ruled out this route, saying, “If we’re going to do anything here [to] succeed in the near and long-term, it’s probably not going to be in free agency.” Another long summer: 2014 not looking much better for Twins | Star Tribune
  6. That doesn't mean that it is not a skill. It is no different than how a good veteran WR knows how to get away with pushing off the defender if he positions himself correctly. If we are going to insist on the "human element", it will always be a skill to know how to exploit it when you can.
  7. Until he ruined the entire article with that head scratchingly ignorant final sentence, he had made some good points.
  8. Replacement level? Joe's hitting numbers would probably improve moving out from behind the plate. But, for the sake of this argument, let's even assume that they don't. His .880 OPS would place 6th in MLB among 1st baseman, a mere .006 behind Freddie Freeman. Freeman currently has a WAR of 4.2. Sure, that is about a 1 win drop off from Mauer's current WAR of 5.1 at catcher, but again, that is if his hitting doesn't improve at all moving out from behind the plate, and it is reasonable to assume that it WOULD improve.
  9. When I look at those division winning teams, I see some pretty talented rosters. I'm not so sure how much credit the manager should get for winning a pretty weak division with guys like Santana, Hunter, Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, Kubel, Garza, Nathan, Liriano, Pierzynski, etc. I guess I don't understand why it's not a 2 way street? Why do the same people who say you can't blame him for losing 90 games with untalented rosters then give him credit for an impressive resume of winning games with very talented rosters?
  10. thegrin: Didn't you just tell us in one post how little we know about FA negotiations, then go on over several posts to claim that you know for certain how FA negotiations work in regards to players not wanting to come to MN?
  11. I guess I don't understand the logic behind throwing at someone for stealing a base in a 7-1 game, especially when you are not even holding them on. It's not like it was a 15 run lead. After all, the Twins did leave the bases loaded twice after that inning, including once with 0 outs, so it could have quite easily still ended up a very close game. Where does this attitude come from that a player should stop doing his job because they are winning? Speed and base-running is a big part of Rajai Davis' game. It seems hypocritical to me to say that he should abandon a large part of his game because of the score. Would Bert ever stop throwing his curveball, just because he's up by 6 runs? Of course not. He's going to do whatever he can to the best of his abilities to get the hitter out, regardless of the score, because that is his job. Just as it is Rajai Davis' job to do whatever he can to the best of his abilities to get on base, and find a way to come around and score. I guess I just don't understand the "old school", dumb "unwritten rules" of baseball. I lost a lot of respect for Bert last night. Something tells me that if it were Mastrionni or Florimon or some other Twins player that had done the same thing, Dick and Bert would have been applauding him for making a "heads up" "hustle" play with the defense not holding the runner.
  12. Yes, scripted television shows are always good economic teachers.
  13. Does Ted Williams belong in the HOF?
  14. Hi DH! Welcome to Twins Daily.
  15. I don't believe I said that. I don't think "most managers in the league" are sending a guy who gets thrown out nearly half the time in that situation. In fact it would seem a pretty standard situation to put up the stop sign. Dozier has quite a bit of XBH's on the season, and especially in the 2nd half, so you don't need Presley in scoring position to tie the game. Putting the stop sign on with a guy barely above 50% success rate, and your best hitter coming up seems like a no brainer to me. I'm simply pointing out the fact that managers DO make decisions that can cost you or win a game here or there, contrary to the argument I hear that you can't fire Gardy because he's not responsible for any of the W/L record.
  16. In an article in the Strib today, Terry Ryan says Mauer "will" play again this year, and that he "will" catch.
  17. He has an identical career ERA+ as Mike Pelfrey. Another reason that a multi year deal for Pelfrey should not even be considered. Guys of his caliber can be found every year. As for McDonald, I'd say no. We have a plethora of back of the rotation options, quantity does not equal quality. Though, if the option is Pelfrey or McDonald, I'd choose McDonald. He's a year younger, and will be cheaper.
  18. And where do you put Sano when he is up in June? He's too young to go straight to DH without being given a shot at 3B first.
  19. I'll also join the hat tipping to Seth for these updates. I don't see eye to eye with Seth on many of his opinions, but I can't dispute the excellent work he does with the minor league reports. By far the best thing going on this forum right now. (That is not a shot at the forum, just a compliment of how good these reports are)
  20. Nobody should be giving up on him. I agree, that would be absurd. I'm just saying that it's not fair to pretend there is not cause for concern. Obviously THIS level of struggling was not expected, because he would not have been given the job, and then sent down if this is what was expected. Clearly the team expected more. If you want to know what fans expected, that is easy. There is a pretty lengthy thread regarding him during ST. Aside from a couple of extreme opinions (both ways), nobody was expecting superstardom from him. Most expectations that I recall were for an OPS around .670'ish (total, not cherrypicking) and elite defense. We saw neither.
  21. True, the only thing keeping this team from WS glory is Mauer.
  22. Not to nitpick, but a "minor heart attack" is actually a legit term. I suffered one a few years ago when I had a newborn baby, and was putting 100+ hours/week into getting my business off the ground, and was drinking 4 or 5 pots of coffee a day, plus pounding red bulls. Those were the ER doctor's exact words, "it looks like you may have suffered a mild heart attack. Cut back on the coffee, and get some sleep." That said, a "minor heart attack" is still a pretty bleeping scary event.
  23. Ok, I stand corrected. I would have suspected that more fly balls would be pulled, interesting stuff. I think I'd still rather have Hicks range in LF, just because it plays so much bigger at TF, but this certainly makes it a closer argument than I would have originally thought.
  24. 6. Think about Alex Presley. Last night I nearly spit out my beverage as Dick tried to comp him to Nate McLouth. He made the lazy assumption that because he appears to have some speed, he must be able to steal bases. After getting thrown out to end the game last night, Presley is now 19 for 34 in SB attempts for his career, a downright awful rate.(McLouth is 128 for 150). A rate so terrible, that he should have a permanent stop sign if he's on base. In fact, why is such a terrible baserunner even sent as the final out of the game last night, with our best (active) hitter coming to the plate as the winning run? So, for the 3rd time in a week, I ask again for someone to explain how Gardy is not responsible for any of our W/L record, with such questionable decisions?
