  1. I think Puerto Rico would be tough. San Juan is the only city large enough to even consider, and the average household income there is right at the poverty line. Their payroll restrictions would make the A's look like big spenders. I think Mexico City is the only realistic combination of proximity, population and wealth. (Excluding Canada.) And I don't think that is a consideration until Mexico gets its corruption and crime under control.
  2. I don't believe waivers go by league anymore now that the season is over.
  3. I'm too lazy to look it up right now, but I'm pretty sure Johan usually had a reverse split, or at least even, because of that changeup. If so, I'm not sure he'd be much of an asset as a LOOGY.
  4. There is still a lot of dead weight on the 40 man, so the new guys must feel Walker has no chance of finding a role on the major league roster.
  5. Why would anyone throw a strike if the hitter will swing at a ball? As hard as it might be to believe, it's actually more difficult to face mlb pitching than minor league pitching.
  6. Fair point.
  7. Romney said Trump was playing the American public. That he was a phony, a fraud, and his promises were as worthless as a degree from Trump University. If you say those things and then go work for the guy, then you are a fraud. I'll listen to the argument that we might be in better hands if he gets the position. But that is a separate argument. He'd be a total fraud. Just like "Lyin' Ted."
  8. Oh, I agree. I think our foreign policy is in better hands with Mitt. I mean the thought of Giuliani in that role is downright scary. I just wish one of these politicians would for once have some principles.
  9. I'd take a chance on Gomez if he can be had for 2 years or less. He has the most upside of anyone on the FA market, and if I'm looking for a flip candidate I'm looking for upside.
  10. Mejia is 23 and has 200 innings at AA and above. I'd have him in the opening day roster, in ink. But he probably won't be.
  11. Romney is a complete fraud, like Cruz proved to be, if he works for Trump after all the stuff he said about him.
  12. If they can't prove a reasonable person wouldn't fear for their life, then it's not guilty no matter what the charge is. In my opinion, they went with the man 2 charge to put on a show, and appease public unrest. Once again, there is no real accountability for police. With no prior record, and plenty of character witnesses, there is a pretty good chance this cop could end up serving less than a year, if any.
  13. If Castile had a gun in his hand then the shooting would have been justified. As described by the prosecutor, 2nd degree murder fits better. I don't see any scenario where 2nd degree manslaughter fits. This wasn't recklessness that accidentally caused a death. The officer knew full well that Castile would die when he shot him 7 times. That distinction (IMO, I'm no lawyer) makes it either justified or murder, manslaughter is just laughable.
  14. The analytics that we are hoping to see infused in this organization have more to do with talent acquisition, and general game management (when bunt/not bunt, shifts, lineup construction, platoons, bullpen use). I'm not really too concerned about specific player vs player tendencies. That is something that every team has already been doing for decades.
  15. 2nd degree manslaughter? Average time served with good time is less than 3 years. Total cop out, no pun intended. How is this manslaughter and not murder? The specifics given by the prosecutor do not describe manslaughter at all, they describe 2nd degree murder. 2nd degree manslaughter is not knowing what's on the other side of the deer you are shooting and accidentally killing another hunter.
  16. By my calculations, the median between rulings is 23 years. 29 of the instances were within 10 years. That is almost 25%, or another way- every 8 years on average, the Court reverses itself on a ruling 10 years old or less. I don't think their precedent is as settled as you think. As to how often protections are reversed, that is in the eye of the beholder on some of these, so I won't calculate, but it looks to be about 50/50. If so, that means once every 16 years the Court reverses itself on a ruling a decade old or newer.
  17. Wikipedia lists 126 occasions that the Court has overruled it's own precedent.I guess I don't consider that rare. That works out to about once every 2 years.
  18. Granite is 24 years old and his future in baseball is as a bench player. I'd be OK letting him play in AAA until July, but I don't think he's a guy you worry about stunting by being a bench player at this point.
  19. Analytics in baseball is as old as the game itself. It's simply a matter of how advanced you want to be. Batting average is analytics. Using any logical measurement of defense is analytical- even something as bare bones as fielding percentage is literally the definition of analysis. Some people in baseball try to stay on the cutting edge of what and how we analyze. Other people, like Molitor so far, prefer to stick with the ones they are comfortable with. Or even disregard them altogether- like giving away outs via bunt. Analytics has ALWAYS been a huge part of baseball, more so than other sports. It's why we revere the numbers so much. 500 HR, 3000 hits, 300 wins, etc.
  20. The court has revisited many issues over the years. I won't even try to come up with some specific future example, but I think if the right gets a favorable court balance, they would find a way to get a case heard.
  21. Of course it can. I may be misremembering, but haven't the important challenges to it been narrow 5-4 decisions? Also, I think many of the associated protections have been via executive order, which the new President can cancel at any time.
  22. Who were the guys discussing him? Some of the old school guys think pitch framing is a hoax, so that might explain that. If you take away his elite pitch framing, then he probably is a mediocre defender. However, I consider pitch framing to be the most important aspect to catching, followed by shutting down the run game, so in my eyes, I'd consider Castro very good defensively.
  23. For what it would cost to get him, it would probably look like the White Sox the last 3 years. I don't think we are close enough to contending to warrant a move like this, although I do appreciate the ambition and imagination.
  24. Dozier is from Mississippi.
  25. And I'm not even saying that he is/isn't/can't be a good manager. I mean, my opinion is that he's not, but that's not what I'm saying in this thread. Regardless of how good he is or is not as a manager, he hasn't seemed to base any of his decisions off any analytics. Now, maybe last year has him willing to change, but like others have said, I'll believe it when I see it.
