  1. No way he should slot ahead of Berrios, IMO. Then again, the order is pretty meaningless.
  2. Yes, that finish was awesome. When you hear that someone willed themselves to victory, this is precisely what they're talking about.
  3. I initially wanted a pitcher as well (Gore or Greene), but I'm thrilled that they picked Lewis. He's going to be a star, IMO.
  4. Can't pitch from the trainer's room. Not much of a loss here, as with Burdi. Some bodies just don't cooperate with throwing a baseball overhand really hard.
  5. The school police officer who did nothing while 17 children were murdered should be held partially liable.
  6. I'm sure they weigh many things that aren't dealbreakers. They never said they don't draft guys on social media. If they'd said that one of the reasons they drafted Lewis was because of his speed, would you interpret that to mean that they won't draft anyone who is slow?
  7. To me that sounds like not risking damaging your chance at a decade of playoff contention, but low odds of winning it all (a la 2000's Twins), on an all in shot at a title. I get why the Twins would want to operate that way. I'm sure they make more money with sustained success over 81 home games than they do in the playoffs, and from management's perspective, it keeps their seats from ever getting too warm. Purely from a fan's perspective though, I'd love if they truly went all in once they think they have a foundation that could win it all. They never quite did that in the 2000's. Stewart was a nice add, but he was better than expected, outside of that, they never traded a bunch of prospects for a real difference maker. I know many disagree, I totally understand and respect the other side. But as I've stated before, I'm a guy that would rather suffer through a decade of awfulness, and a WS title, then a decade of good regular seasons with no postseason success.
  8. I certainly don't deny these guys have multiple variables to consider. I get annoyed when the default for anyone we fail to sign is, "he obviously had no interest in coming here. ", despite zero evidence of such.
  9. If the Twins have continually asked Sano to show up in better shape, and he's declined to, then that would be my concern. I've never met Miguel, so I can't comment on how much he should weigh. A lack of conditioning could explain his poor second halves.
  10. Ervin Santana is from the Dominican Republic. I'd imagine this "rule" had has a lot of exceptions.
  11. No, it wouldn't be bad. The problem is that then you've used 2 options before he even debuts. That's where the 2 years of lost development tempt you to try to push him up a little more aggressively.
  12. 1. It's been reported as "just over 20m AAV." 2. Fair enough, though I'd present it as an alternate theory, not an accusation. I made a lengthy post in another thread where I explained that far more likely than the above described theory is the possibility that the Twins entered FA genuinely committed to a legitimate pursuit of Darvish, but with the slow developing market, talked themselves into the idea of having their cake and eating it too- getting Darvish at a bargain price. From inside their bubble (I likened it to a frenzied gambler, sure that he'd found a can't miss underdog), they didn't realize they were making an offer that had no real chance of succeeding. Either way the net result is that they made an offer with no reasonable chance of success. I think Darvish made it clear to teams that he wanted a 6th year and/or an early opt out, and I think he was willing to wait as long as he had to to get it, even if that went into the regular season. If that's the case, it doesn't really matter if the Twins offer was 2nd best or 15th best, sometimes there are minimum requirements to have your offer considered.
  13. I'd assume when exactly each publication scouted him makes a difference. These guys are so young when they sign it's all projection. I remember when Polanco first signed, he was scouted as a glove first guy who may never hit enough. By the time he got close to mlb, of course, that had flipped.
  14. As opposed to believing they thought 5/100 with no opt out had a real shot of landing Darvish? And all the places that the bulk of the fan base gets their info from (LaVelle, kfan, etc.) are making sure to tout how serious of a run they made at Darvish, so definitely everyone who even casually follows the Twins think they tried super hard to sign Darvish. I don't even know what to make of the second part of your comment. This wouldn't require everyone in the world lying. Seems like a bit of a straw man to me. Are you suggesting people don't sometimes lie or deceive? Especially in business?
  15. Both fangraphs and mlb.com scouting reports describe his bat being ahead of his glove.
  16. I found where I'd seen it. It was in the mlbtraderumers write up of the trade. Though, I now notice that it says he might have to move off SS in part because of the depth ahead of him, fwiw. "MLB.com’s scouting report described him as “an offensive-minded middle infielder whose bat is a little bit ahead of his glove….He has some potential at the plate to hit for average and good extra-base pop.” Palacios’s defense got solid reviews, though the assumption was that he would eventually have to change positions due to the number of other good shortstops ahead of him in the Twins’ system; the same could be true for him in Tampa given Willy Adames‘ rep as the Rays’ shortstop of the future."
  17. Or they weren't willing to spend $100 million on anyone, and knew that wasn't likely to land Darvish, but allows them the public perception that they are trying to spend money.
  18. I thought Palacios was expected to have to move off of SS?
  19. I think you are really underselling Royce Lewis then. He's got a really good chance of being an outright superstar, IMO.
  20. Hasn't it already been shown a few times on this board that the ERA improvement in 2017 (and then some) were the result of improved defense, not better pitching, and that adjusting for defense, the pitching was actually worse in 2017?
  21. I think Mejia will be better than some people think. Of course a rookie pitcher is going to show some flaws. All in all, I think 2017 was a promising first step towards a career as a solid 4th starter.
  22. The post I was responding to was discussing 2017 performance.
