  1. I'm certainly not insulting my intelligence. To be a fan of something, it is assumed a person actually likes that thing, is excited by that thing, and enjoys experiencing that thing. Such blatant pessimism from the majority of posters is not congruent with that. No one is saying blind optimism is needed, but realism and perhaps guarded optimism would seem appropriate. We are fans because doing so makes up happy. I've watched the same three extremely difficult years you all have and been just as frustrated at times as you all have too. Yet I'm not on here trashing the team, the management, the ownership, the chances for success ad nausea just out of bitterness and spite. So yes, that makes me a better fan than many posters on here. I won't apologize for that.
  2. It will never cease to amaze me how so many people who claim to be fans will go out of their way to prophesize doom and gloom. Offense: Some positives and some negatives. Mauer will be Mauer, as someone has already pointed out, and could quite possibly be even better than before Dozier is an excellent second baseman. Top 10 in MLB, perhaps top 5. Some will say he has to prove it, I say he has proven it. Plouffe, Hicks, Arcia can all realistically be counted on for .250 or better with some pop and in Hicks' case some speed. Hammer could very easily be done. Or he could be in that .250 with pop category. Not expecting great things from him this year, hoping for good things. Floriman will play excellent defense but anything at the plate is a bonus. Suzuki isn't likely to hit well. Pinto is. Kubel seems like a mistake. Coloballo could have some nice value off the bench. Defense: Strong up the middle with Flori, Dozier, and Hicks. Average at C and possibly 1B. Slightly be low average at 3B. The corner OF won't be pretty unless Pressley plays some left. Pitching: Average at worst. Likely at least a full run lower ERA than last year's squad. Instead of the entire rotation made up of marginal starters (Diamond, Worley, Hernandez, Albers, et al) we now have an entire staff of true MLB caliber pitchers. Likely that Meyer is up with the club at some point. Summation: Pitching much better, holding par on offense and defense. Win range from 70-85. So much to look forward to this year if you are a real fan.
  3. I think what they've done with Dozier begs to differ. If he repeats his success from last year (and I believe he will) he will be a definite win as far as talent development. From middling prospect to top-10 2B in baseball, I'll take that any day of the week.
  4. Worley will be placed on waivers soon, I'm surprised he hasn't already. Deduno has a lock on the 5th spot IMO. I was hoping we would cut bait with Diamond as well since he doesn't project well in the pen. I suppose some of those bad splits will be covered up if he's in the long relief role.
  5. Better to make savvy decisions than throw money at the wall and see what sticks. But hey, it's not our money, so why should we care right?
  6. Agreed, Garza's offer was certainly not a low ball. Santana on a 1 year makes no sense for the Twins (though it does in the moment for the Brew Crew). If it was 2 years from now I'd have easily given Santana that contract to play in MN, but not now. Edit: I am still uncertain about Drew. Would it be smarter to run with Flori until Santana is ready? Should we try to move Dozier back when Rosario comes in? Hard to make a savvy decision when there are so many unknowns. On the other hand, I was counting on Sano's bat in the lineup by the ASB...so an offensive upgrade should probably move up the priority list some. Just a difficult call.
  7. Oh. So no Game of Thrones forum then?
  8. Great link. Really fun to watch.
  9. I would be willing to put a case of beer on who has the better ERA or WAR at the end of 4 years, but that's a long time away. How about a recurring bet once a year for both those metrics? Oh, and I get Nolasco if that wasn't clear.
  10. Yeah, I did overstate that a bit. The Yanks did develop a core of nice players early that decade. Subsequently they added a LOT of high (over?) priced FAs to extend their run of dominance. Similar to LA the last several years; if they want a player, they will spend enough to break the bank of every other team, then do it again the next year, and the next. That is what I perceive of shallow. The difference between earning a title and buying one. Nor am I a Twins apologist. There is no doubt they made plenty of mistakes over the last 20 years that contributed to some very poor teams.
  11. The difference is between wanted and expecting. I want the Twins to win the WS every year. I don't expect them to, nor should I. Yankee fans have come (or at least they used to) to expect a WS win every year.
  12. Couldn't disagree more. If that type of uber-elitist, condescending, results>>>>journey attitude is all you can muster then why not just go be a Yankees fan? And this isn't just aimed at Thrylos, half the posters on here only seem happy when they are pointing out how awful the Twins are and how they should be like a big market team like LA, NY, or Boston. They will spend big for you, they will claim any season without a world championship is a failure of a season, and they will put more successful teams on the field that the fan base could care less about as long as they are winning. That, IMO, is not what Twins baseball should be about. And thankfully, that is not what Twins baseball has historically been about. I will take the journey of rough years and good years instead of the shallow "success" they have in New York or LA.
  13. Sounds like the path I'm still on. Only now I know I ended that sentence with a preposition and hate myself a little for it.
  14. "No way???? We've landed on the MOON!"
  15. Yeah, I just stocked up on beer so that check may bounce. Sorry.
  16. Well "swooning ladies" is over some line.
  17. Was that sarcasm? Also, if there is to be a dress code we need look no further than Mr. Garza in my avatar.
  18. I have taken issue with the moderation on this site a time or two, but I have never felt like I was treated differently because I am a relative newbie.
  19. As long as we're voicing objections to moderation, I am wondering why posts with heavy sarcasm aren't allowed? I have had 2-3 deleted already. I don't think sarcasm is inherently disrespectful, and it is a mode of communication that can sometimes be more effective than a dry recitation of one's opinion. Name calling and personal attacks I get, but I don't understand the war on sarcasm.
  20. Herbie gets the nod for when he shouted at the booing crowd in Atlanta... "I love it!!!!" "I love it!!!!" It takes a man to look up at 50,000 screaming enemy fans with "Fat Boy" banners and scream back into their teeth.
  21. I would have definitely paid Garza that contract, even a bit more, and considered myself getting the better of it as a GM. That said, I have a very strong feeling that Nolasco's overall stats for the next 4 years will beat Garza's. I am glad we locked up Ricky instead of Garza.
  22. I like feel good stories, and Albers was one for last season. Sounds like a good deal for everyone involved. Here's hoping he enjoys the culture and experience. The Twins should have enough SP arms after our FAs that we can easily bare to lose him.
  23. I had this same exact thought. How cool is it that 2 guys out of 9 can wins a bunch of games ALL BY THEMSELVES. If they stay half the year in AA the Rock Cats will have the best record in the league.
  24. How much did this business pay in state income taxes for every bloated salary that played a game for or against it's team? How much did this business increase the revenue of the businesses miles around it? How much pure enjoyment did this business bring to millions of fans?
  25. Hmm, how many GR2B did Matty Lawton hit in his career? Do you two account for the majority? My count: Zero Closest - Yohan Santana's rookie year, 17K game. Sitting down 1st base line, foul pop landed three seats to my left. The lady in the seat next to me gave me a dirty look for sticking my glove out towards it, but I had had enough beer and dome dogs to let it go. Oh, and I am 35 and I still bring my glove to every game I go to.
