The Twins New Shortstop for 2023?
Beast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just fold this franchise. My God. We should have like $60 million to spend and we’re clamoring for “cheap options” and Iglesias? What the point? Do fans think they get bonus points for takes like that? It sure as heck isn’t going to win baseball games. We’ve been playing this “get cheap options and wait for someone” game for like two decades now. It’s gotten us a bunch of crap teams and a world record for playoff incompetency. On top of it, our farm system stinks right now. What the hell is there to lose? Its like some weird baseball masochism that’s unique to Twins fans. They should start giving away gimp masks as promotions at the games.- 42 replies

Twins Daily 2022 Awards: Most Valuable Player
Beast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Do you get a most valuable player when you stink? If they lose Arraez, they still stink, they still fold like a cheap tent when it matters, they still win nothing. Result is the same with or without Arraez. They maybe win 2-3 more games (whatever his WAR is) with him, which may actually net them a lower draft pick. Following that logic - Arraez may actually be the least valuable player. The only value created this season is the future draft pick. If not for him, it may be a higher, more valuable pick. This is obviously tongue-in-cheek. But, there’s no way the MVP isn’t Carlos Correa. Awarding to Arraez over Correa is just plain absurd.- 33 replies

The Minnesota Twins' 2023 Payroll Preview
Beast replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I’m the decision maker, here’s what I do: -Kepler is moved. Urshela is retained as a utility guy. -Miranda gets full time 3B. Arraez full time 1B. Plenty of rotation going on with Urshela/DH. -Lewis gets moved the OF. He gets plenty of time between center and left with the Buxton/Kirillof injury issues. Plenty of rotation going on with those two spots and DH. -I resign Correa. -I look into a high-payoff reclamation project type pitcher on a short deal like Clevinger, Corrasco, etc. -I bring in a of high-end reliever to try and establish a dominant bullpen from the jump (and not screw around with castoffs in high leverage roles). That would probably about take care of the budget. -
Will the Twins Pursue Aaron Judge?
Beast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is the one hypothetical event ever conceived that doesn’t exist in an alternative timeline. Turns out the multiverse isn’t infinite. You just found the edge. -
I thought this was a Randball parody article when I read the title. We’re more likely to find Babe Ruth’s DNA in an amber-crystallized mosquito and splice it into Ozzie Smith’s to play SS and bat clean up next year. Even if we committed to a significant term, which we won’t, he’ll likely take a discount to get the hell out of here. He’s a high-end competitor. He’s not wasting his career away with Nick freaking Gordon protecting him while getting his arse kicked by garbage teams in the worst division in baseball. He might sooner retire and play for the Raymond Rockets (where the odds of winning anothet World Series are equivalent).

He’s just not that good. But, in true Twins style, he’ll be a probably centerpiece/fixture here for the next 5 years. Batting third. This is why there’s no hope. Hes expendable on a legit contender. He’s a serviceable starter on a bad team. That’s just all there is to it. I couldn’t care less whether he’s on the roster or not. It means nothing. If he’s a bench/utility guy, or bottom of roster filler, then I’m listening. Is the “roster crunch” people are referring to sarcasm? Or are we referring a crunch in regard to who to send packing first? Luis Arraez is OPSing less than .800 this year and for his career, and people talk about him as if he’s an HOFer, transcendent talent. The same “analytics” guys telling you BA doesn’t mean squat, will treat powerless Arraez as if he’s playing the same game as Gwynn in the 80s. That’s basically our centerpiece going forward. Just one example of delusion. Im starting to wonder if it’s just time to just fold this tent and move it to whichever obscure southern city will take it. Is there even a realistic scenario where we’re even remotely competitive in the next century? Gio freaking Urshela? Maybe a little hyperbole, here, but my God is this frustrating. What an absolute disaster in all facets. From ownership, to administration, to the players, to the media, to the fans. It’s literally the meme with the dog sitting at kitchen table with the house on fire sipping his coffee.

2022 Twins--What Went Wrong and How to Fix It
Beast commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
I think people just overvalue a lot of Twins players. Guys like Kepler and Polanco aren’t going back to 2019. Nick Gordon and Trevor Larnach just aren’t that good. Buxton will never play a full season. Kirillof’s career may be derailed at this point. Royce Lewis may never stay healthy. If he does, we don’t know he’s a good major leaguer yet based on a small sample. The list goes on.- 41 comments

Carlos Correa Makes His Decision Clear
Beast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
People are really going to clutch their pearls over this? Unreal. It’s truly bizarro world around here. It was always delusional to think he was staying here. I basically got called a lunatic and idiot for saying that. If this is a surprise….it’s on you. Why should he be “tactful?” To lead a random group of fans to think their favorite organization isn’t a dumpster fire? To praise an organization that just did everything in their power to drain his value by surrounding him with hot garbage? He’s probably pretty pissed about how things went. Heck, I’d be more harsh and I’m just a fan. He was likely promised a number of things. Instead, he got caught up in one of the biggest displays of trade deadline and overall administrative failures ever seen (and for the 100th time, it’s not bad luck). Maybe if Twins media and fans also had a little belly fire instead of making excuses and lauding mediocrity, ownership would get the message. Its a hard pill to swallow for some. But, I think we’re entering some dark days here. Like late 90s level stuff. Where our All-Star rep and best player has a season line of .270, 16 HR, 54 RBI. Lifeless, soul-sucking baseball. Carlos isn’t an idiot. If he was in any way optimistic about what was going on here, he’d answer that question differently. He can’t get out of here fast enough. I’ve been saying that for months and have been repeatedly been told I don’t know what I’m talking about. Not much else to say to the “experts,” on that. Lastly, why the hell wouldn’t you want someone to be honest? What kind of world do we live in where people demand false tact and pomp over honesty and brass tacks. Good for you, Carlos. Go win, have fun AND get paid. Tell anyone outraged and offended where to go. -
If we consider “success,” a rookie and utility guy OPSing .750…..we’re in trouble. If this season wasn’t a failure, failures don’t exist. It was a clinic in poor roster management, poor decision making, poor execution, poor leadership, poor coaching, poor performance, etc. that led to one of the biggest collapses in the history of baseball. We’re supposed to feel encouraged about this team’s playoff prospects going forward because a previous #5 overall pick progressed from unplayable to league average? I just can’t get on board with labeling anyone who disagrees with this ridiculous premise “ignorant.”

Bad take. Blame the FO for not learning from the historical precedent and planning accordingly (aka, doing their job). His production when on the field this year was more than worth his salary. The one problem with Buxton this year, IMO, is he played just enough to give people false hope of a competitor. If this FO hadn’t of inherited this incredible talent it would’ve been a throw away season from day 1. The stadium would’ve been even emptier than it has been (which they deserve). The homers and propagandists wouldn’t be throwing the issues at the feet of injured players. We wouldn’t be seeing all of the sob stories on behalf of the FO’s annual “bad luck.” People would be facing the reality that luck is a product of preparation. There may be enough of a ground swell to drive ownership to action and get something done. As much as I love Buxton, he’s probably more valuable in regard to getting this team back to relevance if he just spent the whole year on the IL and let the team really tank.
-
This is no longer a Buxton issue. This should not have contributed to the collapse. It’s been long enough where everyone knows the situation. I’m getting so tired of hearing about “bad luck,” when joe blow average sports fans can read these situations better than the front office. He more than earned his salary this year. When he plays, he’s electric. But, the FO needs to adjust and treat his presence in the lineup late in the year as a bonus. It’s nothing short of incompetent that they didn’t have an adequate back up plan. Attempting to spin it in any other way (not saying that’s what’s done here, but there’s about 50 articles in the last two weeks) is bordering on propaganda. Yes. The situation we’re in is the front office’s fault. I repeat. It is their fault.

Planning for a Post Correa Reality in Minnesota
Beast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Zero chance Correa is back, even with the loaded SS class. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers will all be willing to pay. Let’s say Correa is the fourth man out - there will still be a line of 4-5 teams waiting to throw a deal at him equal or greater to the Twins. And I’ve said it before, I wouldn’t be surprised if he took a cut in average annual value to play long-term for a legitimate franchise. If Nick Gordon or Gio are starting a significant number of games at short stop, blow it up completely. I mean, they should anyway, this roster is a mess and loaded with damaged goods, but holy crap would a season full of Gordon at SS be ugly.- 36 replies

Why the heck would Correa want to come back here? This team stinks and there is no hope going forward. Does he look like he’s having fun hitting in front of Nick Gordon, playing next to Jermaine Palacious, and behind Dylan Bundy? Maybe there’s something I’m missing. But. he’d probably take a pay cut to go anywhere but here at this point.

Twins 6, Royals 3: Twins Lose No-Hitter in Ninth Inning
Beast replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nothing wins over an audience like finding creative ways to call them stupid. Are these different armchair GMs than the ones who clamored for them to quit blowing the season by running Pagan out as closer for two months? While the enlightened were pontificating about unlocking his spin rate and velocity? In seriousness, I get why they pulled him. That pitch count was up there. I can also see why one would say that they already royally F’d this season, why not give the kid his chance at history. The kid has hardly pitched more than 4 2/3 in any outing all year. Is there a litany of documented cases of young pitchers derailing their career from throwing 130 pitches in a game instead of 100? Joe must be just as dumb as these armchair GMs, because it seems he agrees, judging by how he ended that interview. He sounded thrilled. Come on, Joe, get a clue about theoretical spreadsheet simulated baseball. Also, get a clue about your own body.. I don’t know how anyone could question it when they’re doing such a great job at keeping these guys healthy. Shut up and throw 20% more elbow torquing breaking balls, and throw it 5 mph faster. The loyal fans can just shut up too. It’s a privilege to pay like $300 to sit in an empty stadium and watch a AAAA pitcher screw up what would’ve been the best moment of the season. Go somewhere else if you want something remotely interesting to watch. Lastly. Desperately needed in the next series? What, to slot in after the stopper, Chi Chi Gonzalez? They’re 6 games out of the division and have to jump two teams. Half the team is in a body bag. Their playoff odds are zero. It’s over.- 71 replies

What Happens to the Twins Front Office for 2023?
Beast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It’s mind blowing, the number of pieces raving about this FO getting rolled out this week after getting our ass kicked by the Yankees AAA club and Guardians (basically another AAA club). Judging by the level of ratio these articles have received in the comments, I don’t think anyone buys this borderline propaganda at this point. I really appreciate what you guys built here. It was great at one time. A bastion of baseball truth. Kudos for the idea, the hard work, etc. But, It’s kind of turning into Twins.com. The CNN of Twins blogs. Unreadable for casual fans who watched them piggy back off the previous regime, squander one of the greatest offenses in history in 2019, make numerous awful decisions (remember the 2018 debacle anyone? Now this?). They’ve flat out stunk. We’re pushing a decade and they haven’t even caught the scent of a playoff win. I mean, honestly. We get it, they’re not going anywhere because ownership is incompetent. But, It’s not illegal to criticize where it’s deserved (at least it used to be). Bloggers for years complained about not being allowed into the country club. You finally get in and the first thing you do tie a cardigan around your neck and join the yes men like Lavelle, etc. Is that the standards are just that damn low? Or, is there really no safe haven left to honestly talk baseball instead of ass kissing.- 56 replies

In the End, the 2022 Twins Never Stood a Chance
Beast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I get that excitement for the team drives page views, revenues, etc. and I’m sure the people you all deal with in the FO really appreciate articles like these….but woof. What a parade of “it’s not their fault,” this week. What’s the old saying…”Thou doth protest too much?” At least present the illusion of unbiased analysis here occasionally. Thats why I came here in the first place. It was once honest analysis. The comment to the effect of “nothing they can do about Paddack and Mahle,” Is a bridge too far for even the biggest homer. The Mets, one of the most generally incompetent organizations of the past few decades, backed out of a Paddack trade because they were concerned about the elbow before the Twins made the deal. The freaking Mets found a way to figure it out and make the right call on that one.- 94 replies

Could the Twins' Injured Roster Win the AL Central?
Beast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’m seeing these lists put together a lot lately, and it’s mostly just dramatic effect. The big problem is the reliance on a lot of these guys. This isn’t an aw-shucks, who could’ve seen that coming, scenario. Byron Buxton, Jorge Polanco, Miguel Sano, Alex Kiriloff, Kenta Maeda, Bailey Ober, and Randy Dobnak have all had recent and/or significant injury history. Some with little to no expectation of contributing this year. They even came into the year setting a goal of 100 games for Buxton. You can’t set that expectation, then turnaround and lament one IL stint. Paddack and Mahle were hurt when they traded for them. Hell, casual fans here were expressing concern at the time of acquisition of both. There should be no surprises there at all. I still like both moves and they can still payoff - but acting like it’s hard luck that they’re currently hurt is disingenuous. Guys like Larnach and Lewis were basically unknown commodities, with Lewis also coming off a major injury. Jeffers has been OK at best, not something that should be overly difficult to replace. We didn’t choke the season away due to missing Ryan Jeffers playing mediocre defense and hitting at the Mendoza line. A handful of those guys weren’t going to contribute even if healthy, (Bechtold, Romero, etc.) or can be easily replaced (Stashak). The problem is that they placed some sort of reliance on these guys. There is some luck involved on one or two of these guys. But, when we’re seeing it to this extent, it leans much more toward awful judgement. It’s their job to make the right call on personnel. Get the damn job done. No more excuses.- 25 replies

Twins 1, Yankees 7: Twins Strikeout in Game 2
Beast replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope nobody shows up for the remaining home games. This team doesn’t deserve people spending their hard earned money in this time of economic uncertainty. I may show up if the farmers market runs a promo to dispose of their old produce by throwing it at the windows of the FOs offices. That may be the only way to get a crowd the last couple weeks. Although, I was thinking about it last night after the second game. Maybe I’m being unreasonable with the FO. Is it the ownership group? Everyone mocks the “cheap Pohlad” mantra, but is it just so toxic at the top that nobody could succeed here? I don’t think that’s unlikely. There has to be something going on under the surface. You don’t repeatedly implode in such embarrassing fashion without a root cause (and, no, it’s not injuries). I think it may be a little of both. If so, what the hell is the point? There’s just no hope here. Ever. That’s just a sad truth. Pretty bleak outlook. I’ve never been as frustrated, disillusioned, jaded….frankly, sick of this organization as I am right now. I can’t imagine I’m alone. They’re going to have to change something just for the PR benefit. This just feels like it’s run it’s course.- 27 replies

Short Starts Are Not a Minnesota Twins Thing
Beast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The reason Falvey was brought in was pitching. “It’s hard” isn’t a valid excuse for accomplishing nothing on that front in 3/4 of a decade, whether developed or external. There are teams with tighter budgets than the Twins out there getting it done. There are plenty of free agents out there every year better than Archer every year that require a Cole mega deal. I’m not buying the implication that they’re just always stuck with guys like Archer. But, I’d they’re going to cower at the thought of a significant pitching contract, they can’t screw up evaluations like they do. You can’t trade for multiple guys who are too hurt to pitch in one year. You can’t pick Archer over Cueto. You can’t bring in the worst reliever in the MLB over the past 3 years and watch him blow 15 games because you like his spin rate. Their decision making and roster construction this year has been pretty horrendous at times. I don’t care when they pull guys. But, people do because what they’re doing isn’t working. They’re questioning all philosophical decisions at this point. Nobody cares if a similar philosophy is working for Tampa or the As (neither will ever win a title). Nobody gives a rip about the “value” you got from 170 innings of Dylan Bundy at 4.5 ERA while you run they run the division down their leg. They’re not paid to theorize. They’re paid to get it right. They’re getting it wrong, no matter the intentions/theory behind. It’s bubbling over. People are sick and tired.- 86 replies

Does Everyone Play Through this Level Of Injury?
Beast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They intentionally traded for two of the guys on the IL, knowing full well they were injured. Everyone knew Buxton would end up there eventually. Polanco hasn’t been healthy since May of 2019. That’s just off the top of my head. There’s been a couple of tough breaks. But, they’ve largely done this to themselves. I’m also not convinced they haven’t implemented something pitching-wise that’s contributing. There are way too many pitching injuries to be bad luck. At the end of the day, their job is to make sure there’s a good team on the field.- 16 replies

Yankees 5, Twins 2: Judge Homer Beats Twins
Beast replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What Grant is missing in his misguided response to Alex, is the Yankees followed up with two very good relievers. Sure, they have one bad reliever on roster as filler. 3/4 of the Twins bullpen stinks. Awful take. The Yankees wouldn’t be caught dead with three relievers of that caliber in their ‘pen. Let alone use them back-to-back-back in a game within reach. They basically just waived the white flag and threw a game down by two runs in September while tied for the division lead (with the other team in first likely to win against the Royals). If you’re OK with forfeiting a game in the division race, you just don’t care. Which is fine, but pretending every other contender would do the same is laughable. I mean, one of the pitchers we used literally just got axed off the roster of a non-contender.- 40 replies
