  1. People judge without knowledge of the process or the patient. It is not be the first time, nor will it be the last time. Ligaments are stupid. Luckily attached to it there is a neuron attached to a brain.
  2. In terms of money being spent in baseball, epic no. There are a lot more contracts given out for more money that failed to produce to what their contract paid them.
  3. In regards to best pure athlete Bo Jackson says hello. Jordan might even be a better pure athlete, he just can't hit a minor league curve ball. Athleticism and baseball, or sports in general, it is what you do with what you got. From pure athleticism, Santana could be the best in the world. That doesn't matter if you can't put it together. Through time the scouting reports have been about Santana needing to put it together. There is no need for anyone outside the organization to rave about his athleticism when they point out what he doesn't do well. Santana is from the Dominican Republic, so he was not able pitch in a state championship. In regards to describing the talent that works for him Stell needs to be honest in his appraisals if he wants to be taken seriously.
  4. Rantz retired in 2012 and was replaced by Stell, so no it is not the same person who has been in charge for the last decade.
  5. Slowey, Liriano and Young returned prospects. Any of the recently released prospects catch fire and make it to the majors? If the answer is no then you have you answer staring at you why they were released. 20-60 prospects every year becomes mostly released players.
  6. Yep, give him time to heal. There is no debate on that. What the results are this year matter. Last year was a recovery year. The question is while regaining the strength is which roster was he better off on. His results do not say it was a mistake to keep him in the minors. Is it better for him as a pitcher rebuilding strength to have bad results? If it was about learning what works and what doesn't at the major league level there was no evidence of learning. If it is honing the craft to be more consistent with his pitches and the bad games were a result of an unhoned craft, the question is what level does he play at to hone that? I think someone said mlb was about winning. By GSC, Albers pitched 3 gems, PJ Walters pitched a couple of good games.
  7. A player NOT playing blocks no one. DeVries on the injured list blocks no one. If DeVries were pitching as he did the previous year he wouldn't have been blocking any one. He did not pitch so one would not know how he would have pitched. To assert your claim that he had used up arm strength by the time he was called up is not provable. Velocity charts would hardly be conclusive to loss of arm strength. When he was drafted he was a 89-93 fastball. That is what he threw for the Twins. There were no reports of loss of speed. When he went back down, how Gibson pitched before appears to have worked as well as it did before he was called up. SSS a given.
  8. If Kyle Gibson had pitched 20 major league games much as he did the first 10 there would be nothing but clamoring what a poor pitcher he is. Through those 10 games he did not show any progress at a major league level and was sent back down. So what basis could you possibly have for saying Gibson was blocked when he pitched poorly at the major league level other than that it is opinion an no facts? While you are fact checking, take a minute to see that DeVries did not pitch for the Twins until September after Gibson was shut down. By the numbers, Walters was no worse than Gibson.
  9. Mason spent 11 years as LaRussa's bullpen coach. He might know a little something.
  10. There may be a few better options than Kubel, but they cost a draft pick. The 2012 Kubel wouldn't be a bad signing . It is a low risk move. As it is, if Kubel is not working out in ST, there is still a likelyhood that one of the FA will still be available to sign. If they coached up Guerrier once to an effective reliever, what is the harm in trying again. What is the fascination with ripping on a club for doing a low cost option with someone you have worked well with in the past? There is no harm in trying. Perhaps you would like to try to explain the harm in signng a minor league contract for someone you can cut without cost.
  11. Carrol was not signed to be the 26th man. Carroll declined rapidly in 2013 as a 39 year old player. You can argue 2013 Carrol versus 2014Bonifacio all you want. One has nothing to do with the other. Different years different situations. 9 some pages into this thread you finally acnowledge that Bonafacio now is not a major league quality player. You missed th point. When Borbon was picked up by the Cubs it was said that they could flip him for a prospect. If the Cubs were anticipting Bonafacio to be an asset, they ouht to remeber what they gt for Borbon. Baltimore got a 28 year old outfielder with 400 plate appearances in the big league. Lst year he had a lessthan league average OPS for outfielders. e did get one vote in the rookie of the year balloting, which probably means the KC writer with a vote gave it to him.
  12. The manager of the Cubs Rick Rienteria gave Bonafacio the ringing endorsement of "he doesn't hurt us". Bonafacio will probably be stashed in the minors untill one of the prospects falls flat. Not a bad idea for the Cubs. Not a good one for Bonafacio unless his agent figures on the prospects falling flat. Maybe the Cubs figure figure they can hold onto him and get a prospect forr him like they did with Borbon.
  13. Sigh. add them both, here comes a pennant
  14. It is certainly a mystery why there is a fuss over adding a borderline pitcher while there is a similar fuss over not adding a utility player
  15. KC is responsible for the guarenteed portion of the contract. If a team picks him up as a free agent they would be responsible for the minimum wage. I would really doubt that someone would pay him more than his KC contract
  16. Without starting another thread can I ask the success=wining=championship crowd answer a follow up question. Is success esential to you enjoying the Twins. Think about one person's definition and over 50 years the Twins would be considered an abject failure as they do not go deep into playoffs. They fail to win more games than they lose 56% of the time. I would appreciate a couple answers
  17. If success to some is only wins and losses, it seems to me to be a rather limited view of sports and what sports is supposed to represent towards life.
  18. Essentially a league average OBP as your lead off hitter? With that criteria Willingham could lead off with better results. The various defensive metrics basically point to average at best, despite his speed, in any other defensive position but second base.
  19. I did not use the statistic to measure future success. As you might have read WPA measures what has happened on a play by play basis. You cited a 2013 batting average compared to the Twins players as a reason to take on this player. I gave you a statistic that was more inclusive of what a player has done for the year and used it to compare what players contributed for that year. There is no upside to this kind of signing. He is a substitute utility player. There is no upside. I would rather they sign a career minor league player coming of a bad season or two that had the upside of being average. Every past statistic on Bonifacio would show that his value is base running and playing second base. The Twins have Dozier. The pinch running duties could fall to any number of Twins players that ride the bench under the tutelage of Molitor except for Parmalee/Collabello survivor.
  20. try reading aall of the comments, I said oops to Dave. I would agree that Escobar is a better option as a utility player than Emilio from KC
  21. How about WPA for a stat then? What does the player contribute? -1.63 for Bonafacio. Puts him behind all 2013 Twins except Hicks and Florimon.
  22. Below average defense, below average hitting ability. If he regresses to his mean, he will be a .265 hitter. Singles, walks, litte power. You can read stats better than what you chose to present to see how almost every Twins batter has a beter OPS. . The valueo emilio is as a backup 2b, so his glove does not hurt you. Otaining a 3b, rf and shortstop are a far larger prioriy that would generatea far better outcome than a utility player. Golly gee, the Dodgrs and the Yankees need a backup or a starter at 2b. Considering what the Dodgers gave up for Butera, the Twins will not overbid compared to the Dodgers..
  23. OOPS, meant less than .700 OPS. Other than Drew, every other SS mentioned is in about the same range for hitting ability. You replace what you don't like with much the same. Change for the sake of change to say you did something is something I don't see as valuable. To me it appears there is a clamor for change jsut to change.
  24. His WAR value probably comes from his ability a 2B. The fangraphs article said that he is worse than average at short, third and center. Worse than average with a bat. The money isn't the issue. The issue is at positions other than 2B does he hurt the team? The fielding numbers one Baseball Reference would say yes. The notion that he would push players at the other positions is not provable with what has been written. If you need a backup 2B and a disaster plan (last option) for other positions, by all means claim him.
  25. Well you should be getting better. Is a .662 OPS as an outfielder really any better over the course of a season? Is one quarter win better for a season worth the commitment?
