  1. The origional point you highlighted was about having good pitching, not just an Ace. Wacha had a great half year not unexpected unless you were not paying attention to the Cardinals Vogelsong had a very good year, not unexpected for him to pitch well. Yes you would have expected Cain to outpitch him but Vogelsong's performance wan no surprise. Sanchez pitched as what was expected of him. That leaves Colby Lewis as your only "unexpected" star pitcher. So in context of the OPyour post really more proves the point you need to have good pitching. Multiple pitchers and not just an Ace and 3 others with a pulse. It also takes a good bullpen and offense as the 2002 ALCS would prove.
  2. Hardly over the head, how about down in the dirt. Perhaps because of the thousands of posts criticizing that it looked like more of the same complaining style that overflows on this site. As the old line goes, if you have to explain it, it is not much of a joke. Sturgeon's law is very apt for your post.
  3. If Jokin's comment was a joke, the joke whiffed bad. As inane as some of the humor is here, there is no reason to think it was a joke.
  4. So every year there ought to be 29 GM and field manger jobs open as there seems to be you make mistakes you should be fired sentiment expressed by many.
  5. They would not be winning any more with Mastro, Presley or Hendriks. The Bartlet mistake was corrected by getting Fuld who has done more for the Twins than Presley has done for the Astros or Mastro for the Jays. Kubel was exchanged for Morales. It would be easier to accept criticism for what they kept in the spring if any of the players they jettisoned would even be playing above replacement baseball. Worley is back on a major league team. After a few starts the baseball world will know if he is pitching decently or not. I do find it strange the love shown Worley now versus what he got last year.
  6. UCL injuries have nothing to do with consistency
  7. This is interesting I didn't know that Bill Smith was still the GM Santana became a full time starter in 2004, by that time Radke had been the staff Ace for almost 10 years. Radke was going to be the opening day starter. Now when it really mattered in the playoffs, who started game one? Santana started. Pavano vs Liriano an issue? Stretching a lot to find criticism?
  8. Is Curt Young a better pitching coach than Mickey Callaway? Is Callaway a better pitching coach than Mike Butcher or Jim Hickey? That a pitcher goes somewhere and does better tha he did elsewhere a credit to the coach? So many different factors, age, experience, heath go into a numbers for pitchers. The Twins pitching staff has over time under Anderson has a fip, xfip and SIERRA lower than the team ERA under Anderson. They have a WPA of 28. As a whole then, the Twins staff pitches better than what is expected of their talent. Not by much. So not great, but not bad either.
  9. Ryan signed the guys to minor league contracts. It is not Gardenhire who signs players Guerrier was in the minors up to the last possible moment, giving Tonkin every chance to work out. Had Tonkin worked out, there would be something different for people to complain about. Antony not a baseball guy? The guy that signs the players to the contracts should have a fairly decent idea of what goes on during a baseball game. It isn't like anyone has come up from AAA this spring and made the decisions look bad other than Santana. I don't think anyone saw this sort of production out of Santana.
  10. Given the struggles of Nolasco, Deduno and Correia, Cahill blocks no one.
  11. His line drive percentage is up. It is not bad luck that babip is up. I would take a look to see if his slider and cutter are working
  12. Since 2008 most of their high picks have been high school players that are still making their way up the system. They really have not had a later round draft rise up since Moore and Jennings. They have had the same scouting director for a long time. It is a bit of luck to get a late rounder to the majors, but that is what a team needs.
  13. When you complain of poor players being on a roster it is a rather poor thing to complain about as there are always going to be poor players on a roster. To complain that I speak of generalities and wanting examples, I am still waiting on who you think the young players that were blocked that were superior players.
  14. And yet you still miss my point. The Rays did not populate more wisely because it was the drafted players that got them there. Every team is going to have players that you want to call garbage. 955 players stepped into a batters box last year . Only 135 had a WAR over 2. Stretching a little more, only 202 had a WAR over 1. There is going to be a lot of players on the roster that you are not thrilled about. Every roster including the Oakland and Tampa has players that you do not like and do not produce much. Sometimes these dreck players are players on their way down.. They have a recent history of producing. You know the holes in your prospect game. You sign the vet and hope. Most of the time you are wrong, but sometimes you can be right. To fault the Twins for signing some of these players is wrong because there was nothing better in the minors at the start of the season except for Castro and Bartlett.
  15. Make a blanket statement with no proof and tell someone to prove you are wrong. Beautiful. Yep the current team has a lot of dreck on it. Yep past teams have had a lot of dreck on them. History would say that up to 2010 the dreck did not prevent winning. That dreck pre 2010 was viewed as better dreck than what they had in the minors. You offer nothing in the way of proof that a player superior skill was blocked. Nothing. I gave you Castro and Bartlett. Anything else was dreck versus similar dreck. Brian Bass, minor league free agent pickup that cost the minimum for the bullpen. Mike Lamb signed because what else was available in the system for 3B? Combine his money and Hernandez's money and you could have bought what for 3B that year. Complain, but at least be somewhat cognizant of what the alternative was rather than look under a microscope in a vacuum with an eye patch.
  16. When you make a statement that they sign dreck that often block better players it would be nice if the statement had examples that proved your point. Buscher was a minor leaguer the Twins picked up as a rule 5. He performed a little better than most rule 5 players do. That makes him a different type of pickup, young player, than the rest of your list. Batista blocked what player? Any player on your list signed as a free agent only blocked younger dreck. Except for Castro. A blanket statement made off one example. If your point was the Twins could have saved money by using young dreck, so what. Did I say the Rays didn't achieve much? Tampa Bay's run for the top looks like it will end this year. 4 trips to the playoffs, one appearance in the WS, the rest out in the first round. The run at the top was made through pitching and 2-3 great position players that were mostly high draft picks or obtained in trade. It is not like any of the yield of the recycled young players ever rose up and put them over the top.
  17. The Rays had a window where a few great pitchers and a couple real great position players came through the system. The 2 great position players they have at this point are Longoria and Zobrist. They had Crawford. They did well by having pitching. Not great pitching this year and what is their record by maximizing the same position players without great pitching? Buscher was well under 30 when he was called up by theTwins. Please help me recall what promising 3B was held back by Batista. Matt Moses? At least try to be credible
  18. fip of 2.90. PE score was probably too low for you to want to mention. HR/9 of 0 leads the league for the lowest. Cherry pick stats. Sample sizes for any of these statistics is so small as to render any of them meaningless. In 10 games this season he has one blown save and no holds, no losses.
  19. By the standards you set forth, the 24 year old is a failure and undeserving of being on a big league roster. I point that out to you not to be snide but to make the point that even the best run organizations have players that do not meet some people's standard of good. What difference is it if it is a 24 year old or a 94 year old, the results are not there. I would think that winning teams care more about the results than age.
  20. Using your criteria from earlier, is a pitcher with a 2-6 record and a 5.31 ERA an effective use of a roster spot ?
  21. Excuse me for thinking you were capable of putting forth a better argument to get rid of Correia. If not being part of the future is a criteria for being on the roster then get rid of 1/3 of the team. Don't bother to sign Morales. Cut Willingham now. Nunez, gone. Deduno is over 30, he is not the future either. Get rid of him, too. If ERA is your criteria then you ought to be talking about getting rid of Nolasco for a while, too. Gardenhire can't rip on Correia because the prize free agent that will be paid for 4 years is performing equally bad. Micro thinking is not going to help anyone on this board view why the Twins are doing what they are doing. On the other hand, one could easily think that the under performing pitchers get a litle dl time so they can do a Pelfrey on them. It is not the Twins MO to rag on veterans. As a back of the rotation starter both fip and WAR put Correia as a back of the rotation starter. That is what he was signed as, that is what he gives them.
  22. In the book Freakenomics the authors explained why the guy at the street corner would sell drugs. It was statistically the most dangerous job in America as well as low paid. Teams can get players to play for a pittance in an effort for the player to reach their dreams.
  23. Franklin Morales appreciates your eyesight. ERA as the definative statistic for pitching? Really? Why not argue wins and losses define the pitcher? I am not defending Correia, but kind of irritated that poor arguements on this thread. Did you you look who had the third worst qualified pitcher ERA and if so shouldn't this thread be about getting rid of 2 underperforming starters?
  24. The Twin base their opinions on how a pitcher throws in the minor league and not their statistics?
