Isn't Alfonso Marquez the umpire that Ian Kinsler ripped to shreds after a game in August? Saying essentially Marquez needs to find another profession. For which he was fined, and umpires wore yellow wrist bands for a game in protest of the leniency of it. Or, at least, Marquez did.

The Phil Cuzzi effect will be real in Yankee stadium. Any word who has the plate tomorrow night for Team Blue? Hate it when the Yanks get all the calls but let's face it, it's in baseball's best interest if the Twins would finally just go away. Course, MLB hacks have been saying that all year!

Sano vs. Robertson on Tuesday? SO. It's guaranteed. Same with Betances and Chapman and Kahnle. And he can't run. Twins made this run without him. For better or worse, let's face this without the Sano-man.

Article: Twins Reinstate Miguel Sano
Old Twins Cap replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nick-named him "Sano-man". Been trying to get s.now in there somehow. -
I would play starting players full game on Saturday and half game on Sunday. Tonight, I hope they get to rest as well. Then again, with young players, that's a lot of time on the bench thinking, constructing mental stories about how they need to perform in New York. I like preparation... but over-analyzing and projecting can lead to standing around and watching. Jaime Garcia capitalized on their over-eagerness first night in the Bronx last week. Twins need controlled aggression, smart baseball to win.

Article: A Blueprint For The Bronx
Old Twins Cap replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the Twins do not score and take the lead by the sixth inning, the game is likely over, given the Yankees bullpen. However, there is one caveat: both Betances and Champman have had periods this year where they were wild, walking bases full, then aiming their pitches which got pounded. Kahnle, Twins have seen him a fair amount. So, game is likely over if Yankees are up and into their bullpen, but, I will leave it on just in case. -
Article: Sox Win, Twins Clinch Playoff Berth
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So all of our young guys are going to lace up as if it is just another game and play it loose and lively? Doubt that, especially after Jaime Garcia had them eating out of his hand with junkballs in the dirt for five innings last week. But, Yankees stars are young too. Expectations are high in New York and media and fans relentless if they smell a failure. I'd rather see a well-played game, but as long as Twins win, I will take anything. -
Finally. Buxton runs on the first pitch in the Castro at bat late. Need that level of excellence. No reason to wait around on 1B when you have 99% chance of being on 2B and no DP in order.

Watching the Yankee broadcasts, they are really playing up the desirability of not playing that Wild Card game, by winning the division. I suppose no team, but especially one that has had a good year, wants to be in an elimination game right off the bat. But, the Yanks are feeling it a bit. Main thought experiment: Play like you have nothing to lose. Nothing. Yanks have something to lose. As in, a lot.

Article: Twins Magic Number Reaches Two
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You know that MLB has already sent memos to the umpiring crew about how they need to make sure, for business reasons, the Yanks advance. Twins, don't give them that opportunity: swing early in the count. No more Phil Cuzzi's hanging out in LF, whose only job is to judge fair or foul balls, watching as Mauer's line drive both hits Melky Cabrera's glove and lands in fair territory, the ball mark clearly visible the rest of the game. There are bars in New Jersey where, to this day, Cuzzi walks in, and is hailed as a hero.- 24 replies

Article: Charting A Twins Playoff Rotation
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hey guys, these are the playoffs, meaning: these are playoff teams. Colon will get racked in the first three innings, if not sooner, by these teams. Keep him on the squad, maybe he's a mop-up guy in blow-outs, but for no possible reason can you start him in a game that means something.- 78 replies

Not mentioned, but, first time I seen anything like it in MLB: Pitcher gets whacked by a line drive off Mauer's bat and falls to the ground writhing in pain. Thought for sure he would need immediate help. Rolling around on the ground. Not good. Trainer runs out with the manager. Pitcher suddenly jumps to his feet and stretches, does some deep breathing. Whoa! I thought. 'Try to throw the ball', they say. This is the Tigers, right? Last place. On their drive to worst record in MLB -- Last week of the season. 'Throw a pitch. See how you feel." Kid throws one pitch, doubles over again in pain and has to be shouldered off the field. Fractured leg, non-displaced. For Christ sake, is that how you handle that? Idiots.

The Central next year will be between the Twins and Cleveland, as Chicago, Detroit and KC go through the convulsions that engulfed the Twins for 6 or 7 years. That should make it easy for the Central to provide two teams again next year to the playoff skirmish. We thought it would be a bit for this Twins' talent to emerge, but, while we sat at our computers and muddled about prospects, they jumped the gun on us. Happily enough. :}

Article: Escobar Steps Up
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I suppose technically you could say it's a "playoff spot" but for me it's one game to see if you make it to the playoffs. And, it's against the hated Yankees. History awaits. We could exorcise a lot of demons. Or compound a lot of pain. -

Texas the bigger threat right now. I wish the Angels and Texas played each other but they don't. Gotta hope the A's got some gamers on their team and don't fold, unlike the Tigers.- 37 replies

Imagine how hard for the Yanks to get up for the Wild Card game. And, imagine how hard for Twins to lose that game at the hands of the Yankees yet again. But, maybe the Twins are sand-bagging. One good game, come out swinging, catch them off-guard. I like it.

Guy asked me in another thread after I wrote, "Twins need to play well" to win in the playoffs, what the hell that meant. I offer tonight's game as an example. 1. Don't swing at pitches out of the zone. 2. Advance runners and build innings by getting key hits. 3. Make good pitches when you have to. 4. Don't let runners advance through poor fielding plays, including pitches. 5. Make good defensive plays, including good throws to bases. 6. Run the bases aggressively and don't give outs away. Not analytics exactly, not stat-cast exactly, but pretty much the deciding factors when you add them all up. And, in those areas and others, Twins just didn't play well. Even if Mauer hits a flyball, they likely lose the game in an inning or two.

Twins made Jaime Garcia look like Cy Young tonight. I wanted one guy, just one, to go up there and take every pitch. He would have walked. Does anyone know how many pitches they swung at out of the zone? Why don't they realize that Jaime Garcia's main issue is that he can't throw strikes? You have to beat the Yankees early; their bullpen is too good, if occasionally unable to throw strikes.

Article: The Final Three Weeks
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There's no formula for playoffs. The game starts and players go at it. You hope your team plays well because not doing so means your team loses. That's how heroes and legends are made. They happen to play well and win, in the playoffs. Here's to hoping the Twins play well, make the wildcard and play well.- 27 replies

Twins don't need to be terribly good, just better than the terrible teams they play. Then, depend on the reality that the teams chasing them are not terribly good. It's kind of a skid row sprint to the last ticket into the playoffs. Given everything the Twins have been through, I'll take any kind of game against the Yankees, especially an elimination game. Bring it, dammit.

Gotta respect KC and the run they have made with their core group. They knew this was their last bite at the apple and they had the motivation to hammer the Twins one last time. Done with that now. KC will not look the same next year. Twins eclipsed them this year, won the series, lead in the standings and have the better team.
