  1. I don't have any inside information on the Santiago's pitches, but if he really does throw a screwball – and he would know – I can see how a pitch charting system would call it a changeup. It would be thrown at about the speed of a changeup, and have arm-side movement. It probably would be a little slower, and have a little more break than a normal change up, but again, I can see how it would be mistaken based on the flight of the ball. The arm action would look a little different.
  2. I missed Tonkin -- that's a good bet. And Spycake's sound observation handles at least one more spot (they aren't keeping BOTH Danny Santana and Adrianza, I don't guess). If Tonkin is kept, I don't see them dropping both D. Santana and Adrianza, though. So that's still just one. If not Tonkin, who else?
  3. My own guesses come from this set: Boshers, Haley (returned or traded-for), Melotakis, D. Santana. (1) Haley, (2) Boshers, (3) D. Santana (if an outfielder is kept), and (4) Melotakis.
  4. If the Twins go to Opening Day with Gimenez and/or Park on the roster, who gets bumped? Maybe they can put Perkins on the 60-day DL, and that would buy a spot, but what comes next (or first, if for some reason they don't put Perkins on the 60-day DL)? Who are the one or two candidates you see bumped? Maybe go three, in the (admittedly unlikely) case Schuck or Stubbs is on the Opening Day roster. Roster is here (though the Breslow addition and May shift to 60-day DL is not listed yet). http://m.twins.mlb.com/min/roster/40-man/
  5. Average CAREER WAR by draft pick number (table dated 2009). http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2009/06/draft_picks_and.php Average of of all players in the first two rounds is about 5 WAR over a career. For reference: Kyle Gibson now has 5.8 WAR.
  6. "hoards" of evaluators? Shows even Baseball America needs better editors.
  7. Thanks Seth! I love your articles --- always lots of substantive content. And I miss your podcasts with Jeremy.
  8. What I always liked about Punto is that he was the kind of guy to say things like the quote in this story from back when Radke was pitching hurt (and effectively) for the Twins at a time they needed him. In the seventh, manager Ron Gardenhire went to the mound to take him out. “Rad said, ‘No way am I coming out of this game,’ ” pitching coach Rick Anderson said. “After that, Nicky Punto came into the dugout and said, ‘I have a new all-time favorite player.’ That summed it up for a lot of us.” Radke got out of the inning and the Twins won 4-2. http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2006/aug/13/radke-puts-aside-pain-to-help-twins-playoff/

This is just off the top of my head, but I think this is wrong: I would want the 14th, and 15th players to have options --- come up, play and go down. Why would I want someone with a[n assumed] future --- Polanco, Kepler, even Vargas --- to be the 13th player, sitting on the bench behind a 4th outfielder and Santana? Bring one of them up when someone gets hurt and you need an everyday, or at least frequent, player.
  10. Merely an FYI: Achter DFA'd by Phillies as part of their acquisition of Charlie Morton.
  11. Twins reported (by Berardino) to have interest in Fernando Rodney. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2015/12/04/twinsights-twins-have-shown-interest-in-fernando-rodney/ Please --no.
  12. The NY take, old-school media style. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/12/sports/baseball/new-york-yankees-acquire-aaron-hicks-from-minnesota-twins-for-john-ryan-murphy.html?ref=sports&_r=0
  13. Don't know if this is fallout from the Hicks trade or perhaps partly the cause of the trade (though that seems unlikely) -- or mere coincidence. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/braves-resign-aj-pierzynski.html
  14. I have not looked at all the posts, but I doubt this guy has been mentioned. At age 18, had one of the best single-game careers ever: John Paciorek 3-3, 2 BB, 3 RBI, 4 Runs. Never played again. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/paciojo01.shtml The three Paciorek brothers were an interesting bunch. Tom had an 18 season career, 1970-87. John had his one game in 1963, at age 18, and the third brother, Jim, debuted in Tom's final season, 1987.
  15. Players pretty seldom arrive at the big leagues fully formed. Plouffe couldn't very well, and was not near the hitter he is, Dozier couldn't hit and couldn't really play short. Gibson had a poor beginning at the big league level, May began brutally. Perkins, too. Anyone remember Hunter's first pass at the majors? Banjo-hitting, sent back to AAA, then came back better, but still slugged .380 on the year. It takes time -- development doesn't stop at AA or AAA. If the bar a prospect needs to meet is: from day one, being an average or above major leaguer -- displaying competence across the board, then the list is pretty short. Mauer. Liriano. Maybe a few others. The bar can't be that high. I have great respect for the value of an average MLB player, and I don't object to trading prospects to fill a slot or two when it can make a big difference. Average (not replacement level -- average) is good. Probably a WAR of 2 or so. And over the course of a season, having a bunch of such players is very valuable. Right now, for this season, such a player is worth 1.0 WAR, or less. I don't want to give away a player with a 50/50 chance of being an MLB regular for that. To get average MLBers in bulk at an affordable price, you grow them in your farm system.
  16. For the good of the order --- this already exists downthread in the "Vargas to AA" thread, but it seems worth getting it up top as a correction, or at least as alternate info: Vargas shows up on the Rochester roster (souce, Rochester website in milb.com) http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t534 Also Twins site now says Vargas to Rochester: http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/team/transactions.jsp?c_id=min#month=7&year=2015&team_id=142http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t534
  17. I wonder if sending Vargas to AA was merely paperwork until the Wheeler release went through. Vargas shows up on the Rochester roster in the Rochester website: http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t534 Also Twins site now says Vargas to Rochester: http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/team/transactions.jsp?c_id=min#month=7&year=2015&team_id=142
  18. I strongly doubt it. His peak simply wasn't high enough. Compare Bernie Williams. Hunter has had a very good career, but not a Hall of Fame career, I don't think --- not even with his long, productive finish.
  19. My understanding is that Schafer has been fighting various nagging injuries for a couple weeks. I imagine they will DL him. What happens in 15 days is another question.
  20. The tenor of this discussion (so far, anyway) gives me great hope for the rationality of people. I guess Facebook had altered my perceptions. Quite frankly, I'm (pleasantly) astounded.
  21. I don't understand the dismay. If the Twins were looking for a permanent replacement for Nunez and were committed to restructuring playing time (taking PAs from Vargas and Suzuki, as those are the only people Pinto can replace), fine, bring up Pinto. But that's a whole different question from who should replace Nunez for two weeks. Beresford might be a fine choice, but only if he were fully capable at 2b, ss, and 3b, but I don't think he is. Bernier can come up for 15 days, play even less than Nunez, but provide one-game coverage for just about any injury. And Nunez's few PAs go largely to someone else . . . maybe Rosario (through a chain reaction of Escobar subbing in the infield). Concerns about roster construction certainly are fair; I've got them too, but right now, do you want Pinto to get Vargas's PAs? If so, then demote Vargas. Playing young hitters two days a week seems almost a sure-fire way to turn them into players useful only in that capacity.
  22. Just a clarification that the Twins traded for the DFA'd Nunez. The Twins gave the Yankees Miguel Sulbaran.
  23. I absolutely love your hangouts. BUT ---- the name is: ee - noh - HO - sa. Hinojosa.
