  1. Too shallow or too deep? Hindsight is 20/20. But, those HRs make Mastro's depth irrelevant. Pitch selection? What selection? Pelfrey has one pitch.
  2. Gardy will be back next year--100%. In fact, I am confident he will finish 2015 ven if the Twins lose 100 this yearand next year. After 2015??--that's when things get cloudy.
  3. Why would Pelfrey be "on a leash"? The Twins knew who he was when they signed him--and he is pitching the same as last year. It's not like Pelfrey had to arm-wrestle a contract away from other pitchers to sign here.
  4. A top SP isn't useless on the games he doesn't pitch. If said pitcher takes the ball every 5th game and pitches well and deep into his starts there is less need for relief pitchers. The bullpen is better rested and may even be shortened by one permitting an extra position player/hitter to be on the active roster. That extra position player allows more flexibility in the line-up, platoons, pinch-hitters, defensive replacement, or just plain rest. Then there is the emotional "pick-up" when the "ace" is pitching instead of the "journeyman".
  5. Do we have two threads here?--Nunez and Sulbaran? Sulbaran's "claim to fame" is that he was the player received for trading Butera--and he was instantly placed in the Twins Top 20 Prospects. I believe that was "helium". Given the shouting about the #1 minor league system and pitchers in the lower half of the system, it became clear that Sulbaran didn't merit such a lofty status (the other pitchers are better than him). Thus Sulbaran is dead-weight. Nunez--of whom this thread is named after. Clearly the Twins have recognized that they have a problem at SS and it won't be fixed soon. Acquiring a cast-off ("The Twins way") at the very least, provides some depth at the position--even if that depth is "thin". Nunez didn't cost anything. When does the SS problem get solved? IDK and I'm not going to hold my breath. My best guess is that the Twins may need to trade some of its prospects in order to acquire a ML-calibre SS who can be kept for several years.
  6. Teams should aim high. Taking the "safe" pick doesn't make sense. #1 pitchers (when you actually get one!) are so valuable. Sluggers, are worth more. The salaries in MLB reflect the value of stars vs. "good" players. Stars can be traded for a potential treasure chest of talent.
  7. The only "bat" worth taking over a possible #1 pitcher is the "slugger"--the guy you think is a 40-HR/year hitter. "Toolsy" (especially if using the Twins' definition) isn't enough, the guy has to be the power-hitter type. Think Frank Thomas. I think he went #5 OA when drafted--that's the type of hitter who is better than a #1 pitcher (ace).
  8. What happened to: "if everybody else hits, we can have [Punto]...."?
  9. Hmm, 3rd catcher who can sorta play OF, or real OF who can also play CF? Ok since he's not on the 40-man, kind of a problem for Mastro.
  10. I must agree with most posters--it's much too early to start complaining about baseball, there is almost 6 months remaining! We'll have lots of time for complaining. Look on the bright side: they had a lead going into the bottom of the 9th--and improvement over game #1. Two games, both competitively interesting.
  11. Somehow I feel like this thread is like one of those marketing surveys that come by the phone--"have you got a few minutes to answer some questions so we can serve you better"? Optimism--I guess I'm not sure how much we should feel to be considered "optimistic"? Would the likelihood of winning 70 games be optimistic? Or, being competitive in 95% of the games? Not sure what is meant. To me, the only thing to be optimistic about is a willingness to admit that the rotation can't just be "patched" with some castoffs and fringe players--some real money must be spent. It's difficult to be more optimistic than that (and the 70 games) when the cause(s) of this predicament are whitewashed. If the Twins continue to lose (a lot!) and for several more seasons, and numerous early draft selections are made (sort of like the Astros now, and the discredited Rays) will we hear that success was obtained by hard work and savvy management? Or, will we hear that the long-term losing option was selected because other teams (and in other sports too!) have proven that technique successfull?
  12. So the Doumit trade was basically a salary dump with a broken chicken wing tossed in?
  13. It's a fact that Twins fans tend to view Twins players more highly than the rest of baseball. The "fear" that ___, or ___, or even ___ would be claimed by another team is unfounded. If a guy can't make this team--especially if he's 24 or older--there is ample reason to believe that he couldn't be satisfactorily replaced. I think there is altogether too much of an attachment between the FO and players. Some make it, most don't and the FO has to be able to act dispassionately and logically--throats will need to be cut, it's part of their job.
  14. Harumpphh. Same ole sour grapes from Twins fans about somebody else's contract. Anybody consider the inflation factor for the next ten years? Or that this contract may be capitalized and depreciated--serving as a giant tax break? I don't recall any backlash from Twins fans (ya know those true fans!) considering the Mauer contract, so why on Cabrera? Anybody who eats (their) pizza deserves what they get.
  15. Are you implying that the problems weren't caused by Bill Smith?--That Gardenhire was culpable? Blasphemy! Heresy!
  16. Gardenhire demanded a veteran roster--and now he has one. Recall how the last two seasons were explained as "not providing the right players to Gardenhire"? Now he has them--and the FO has him! It's win or it's Gardenhire's fault now.
  17. When I shop at the local grocery store they typically heavily discount the dented cans. We shouldn't be surprised that baseball works similarily.
  18. Accountibility? For which? The Revere trade? Or the overall team collapse? The Revere trade was caused by the big problem--a bare cupboard of major league quality pitching in or near the majors and and overall dearth of major league talent at all positions. The Worley failure is little more than a fart in an elevator. The real problem was the bare cupboard of major league talent. The FO was experienced in operating "on the cheap"--because that's what the Twins had to do before "the good years" of the previous decade. They weren't used to spending on free agents (at market rates) to fix problems--so the did what they did before: sift through the discard pile seeking shiny quartz that could masquerade as (Diamond!) for a season. Finally, an acceptance that free agents were required to build competitiveness was accepted (and enough salary came off the books) to do what most teams do to win--buy some talent. But, I do believe that the gauntlet has hit the floor--if there isn't sufficient progress in the two-year time frame of the contracts (since that's what we we told was their length), there will be major surgery. But not before 2015.
  19. I wouldn't criticize Diamond for that quote "...major league...". In fact, I venture that everybody still in camp believes the same thing--confidence is required for success--even if they don't have the statistics to justify said statement.
  20. They can't keep everybody. This move clears space for others to advance and hopefully prove-out.
  21. There are other factors: they likely aren't able to scout (closely) that many--thus missing entirely on them, then there is the development process.
  22. I think I meant Raley.
  23. I am amazed that there is any hand-wringing over the departure of Worley. How poorly does a man have to perform before "you cut bait"? How many time have we heard the refrain "best minor league system"? Then add the names of Raley, Gilmartin, et al before you conclude that there are several guys deemed "more worthy" where opportunity needs to be provided. Note: I didn't deem them more worthy--the Twins did. Vines have to be trimmed and weeds pulled. No, I don't think that "some 'splainin' is required". My analogy is an Arcia whiff. If Arcia hits enough homeruns, the whiffs can be tolerated.
  24. Stating the obvious: the thread title of "Will this team be the worst of the last four years?" clearly sends a negative message and virtually begs for responses in kind, and simply winning all of 67 this season would qualify as the best of the four years--hardly an endorsement of success.
  25. Last year's team collasped in September--finishing 4-20. While there were several reasons, it is reasonable to conclude that "fight of the fight had left the dog." Simply 'battlin' as they did the previuos 5 months should have added 4 wins--closing at 8-16. While a poor finish, that is far more typical of what happens in baseball for "a rough patch". Conclusion: Adding those four wins and another four wins would not indicate "a better team"--just one that that is more typical of losing teams in MLB. A big factor to guage this season's wins would be what did the othe other four teams in the division do to change their teams? A huge portion of the season is against division opponents. Changes in opponents will definately affect the season's total of wins. Summing up: the betting line is reasonable (71) because last year's team basically threw away September (would they do it twice?!) and Cleveland (maybe KC) won't have the same success as 2013. But, we shouldn't conclude that winning 71 indicates improvement, but simply the vagarities of statistics.
