  1. I have to disagree with the "lack of heart" comment. There have way too many rallies (or near rallies) at the end of games to claim lack of heart. Compare to the previous seasons (especially in September) when it looked as if the Twins were actively helping the opponents shorten the game so it would end (in defeat!) so the players could do something else besides play baseball. No, these guys are trying (to win)--they just aren't succeeding at winning.
  2. I believe that there is ample evidence for Ryan to start working the phones and make some trades now.
  3. It looks to me that BAVGs around baseball are somewhat lower than recent history. It is too soon to draw a conclusion--especially one where "it's all Brunansky's fault". It wasn't long ago that all hitting problems were heaped on Vavra. Maybe the hitting coach really doesn't matter--except for providing Sunflower seeds and "beverages".
  4. Maybe they want to make sure May doesn't have an oblique injury?
  5. Perhaps we will find out how much he is worth in a trade? I would have thought by now that the Twins have approached Suzuki about a contract extention and apparently didn't receive an affirmative answer. It wouldn't surprise me that Suzuki's agent has recommended exploring more options in the off-season. But, time will tell.
  6. It seems to me that Houston was trying to shave money from Aiken so they could sign Nix and the other draft choice. Aiken's agent gambled that he could leverage the deals and satisfy his clients. Aiken likely believes he is entitled to "full slot" and is piqued beyond compromise, expressing his anger with a Hxxx No! to you all. Aiken can play Juco ball, and be drafted next year. If he doesn't like that he can wait to be drafted later. If his arm "falters", well, then Aiken has made the mistake. I don't understand the bile towards Houston and hope it isn't sactimony.
  7. No, Dozier is not untouchable. But, a trade of him requires 4-5 "good prospects", not one. Part of the "attendance problem" is who are these guys? Show producers charge top dollars for stars (and get it), but the Twins don't have these "stars". All the Twins have is Joe Mauer (who sad to say, doesn't shine as bright as before) and 24 "who he?" and why should I pay to watch these guys? Dozier is as close as the Twins have to put on the marquee. Before you mention anybody in the MiLs, re-read Pohlad's quote about minor leaguers in the thread devoted to Pohlad. The fans need connections to the team before they spend their cash. Hopelessly losing seasons using unknowns, hugely reduces the gate receipts. If that problem isn't solved soon, we will be reading about how the payroll is constrained by low revenues (again).
  8. Some of this mindset is shown in the inordinate number of players that have "a Minnesota connection". I suspect when one changes, so will the other.
  9. The Dodgers might include Drew in their offer.
  10. Suzuki The only guy worth paying full price. The vibes I get convince me that the Twins don't see Pinto as "the guy", and I'm inclined to agree. Make him the backup come September and all of next season. If Pinto can convince people he's a #1C, it will be easy to trade Suzuki. Morales What has he done that screams sign me? A .58 OPS screams "you lost your bet on me!" If the Twins believe they need a power hitter--get an OFer! The need is great and the in-house OFers are at best "iffy", generally AAAA-types. Let that collection of nags "duke it out" amongst themselves to fill the other corner--including the use of a platoon. Willingham !@#$ NO! Trade him for a useful part, or keep him if only junk is offered. Dozier I fully expect the Twins will offer him a deal, but it will likely be after next season. There isn't any rush.
  11. Souhan's column (should have had a link included) was completely unexpected when I read it this AM. Normally, the Strib is a cheerleader for the major sports teams and their managements--but not today. In yesterday's paper there was a quote about how certain players were "lobbying" to keep this collection together and claimed that the post-ASG collaspes of the past years were caused by playing the bench and top minor leaguers. Hello!! Many of this collection is here today because of those collaspes and subsequent opportunities provided to said younger players.
  12. "Buying him 'high'?"--Well folks, that is what will happen. The question is: "Which team will be 'buying at the market'?" Those 2-year "offers"--there will be several of them for Suzuki's agent to peruse, and some will come from a team that is playoff-bound. Recall that the Twins had to offer a third year at the same annual pay to convince Willingham to sign. A 31-year-old Catcher--not "rusted-out" yet, there's still plenty of miles left for a forthcoming contract (at least for one team). I neither advocate nor discourage re-signing Suzuki, I'm just pointing-out that he won't have to humiliate himself (last last off-season) for his next contract. Suzuki has paid his dues.
  13. Wow. i love these threads that are premised: "If he signs a team-friendly contract"--one/two years at jouyneyman's wages. Recall Willingham received 3 years and $21MM. Suzuki will be in demand this offseason. Suzuki "served his time" (one-year, make-good contract with a poor team)--and made good. The demands will be commensurate, 4-years and $32MM (and I might be low). After the Twins FO fantasy contract offers are removed from the equation, now what do you do with Suzuki? Pay full price, and solve your "Catcher problems", seek another one-year "fallen star" (and pray), or grind out a solution internally biting your tongue?
  14. Paying to retain Morales because he (might) provide an extra 3-4 wins instead of another Twins' player only makes sense if: a) those extra wins make the difference between a World winner or a 1st round victim, the difference between a playoff team or being a complete also-ran, or c) Morales will be here for several years and will be providing those extra wins for many seasons. Since virtually every poster advocating re-signing Morales uses the premise of a 1-year contract option c) isn't valid. Option a) is pure fantasy. Which leaves option . Some will believe in the potential for next season, some won't. However, if you truly believe in next season's Twins as a playoff team with Morales under contract, then Morales should have been signed for many seasons, not just for 2015. Sorry folks the logic of a one-year contract for Morales isn't there. Morales should be "let go" (hopefully with some useful compensation) or he should be signed for several seasons.
  15. Well we sure can't blame KC for "demanding a trade, so he could start...". There's no way the Twins (or anybody else) would have paid him $5MM/yr to be a relief pitcher. All he did was "look out for #1"--sort of like what Kevin Slowey did.... Begin rock throwing.
  16. Morales vs. Vargas Morales Veteran, higher confidence level in his predicted results, compensation level is high because of years of major league service, likely to leave if on a short-term contract. Vargas Or better yet, existing Minnesota Twins player (Colabello, Parmelee, etc.) Inexperienced, low confidence level of predicted results and more likely to not meet required results level at all, may likely to improve over time to a higher results level than anticipated, inexpensive cannot voluntarily leave to another team for several years. It seems to me that the most likely employers of a "Morales" are teams that believe they are "serious contenders" for the World Series and are willing to pay a significant premium in salary to raise their confidence level of expected results. Example of a former Twin meeting this description: Chili Davis. The most likely employers of "Vargas" or Parmelee/Colabello are: teams in a rebuild mode who are seeking long-term solutions and are willing to accept a few more losses now in order to rebuild. Too many examples of former Twins to name. Many failed, of course, but some succeeded. In which category should the 2015 Twins be placed? The answer to that question should indicate the choice of Morales or Youth.
  17. All these comments: "we can sign Morales for...[some cut rate(?) price]" cause me to conclude that people want to see an 80-win team. Then we can all dream--"maybe Gardy can motivate the piranas to win another 5", and then "maybe they can catch lightning in a bottle"--"Ya never know!" Is this why fans pay 3X more (FV) for tickets as well a special sales tax, to see an 80-win team and be happy with "Ya never know"?
  18. Rather than signing Morales (who I classify as underwhelming) why not seek a younger power hitter who is also a competent OF? Extending Willingham makes no sense. Combine the annual salaries of Morales and Willingham and the Twins can definately sign an outstanding OF! There has been way too much money spent on hole-pluggers. Use FA money for real talent and plug holes from within the franchise.
  19. The reason Morales "likes it here" translates to "no winning team has interest in me". Twins got burned on Pelfrey, Ryan should learn from that painful lesson. If the "trade market" for Morales is poor, that is a clear indication no one else wants him at anything close to this hugely generous contract he has with the Twins. Trade Morales and at the worst Mauer returns to 1B with Willingham/Colabello/Arcia/Parmalee filling the three positions of LF, RF, and DH.
  20. I concur. When the Twins were winning in the 2000's, the active roster was augmented by "a bat or an arm"--but not a particularily useful one. The FO would display an attitude that could be characterized as "there you go, I 'fixed' your problem". KC is a similar type player, not particularily good but nor is he "bad", but definately not "a team-changing, 'problem-solved' type of player". KC is a "hole-plugger", and many fans believe that "more" should have been done especially in light of the past frustrations and the huge increase in revenues that ultimately come from the public in one form or another. The "bile", to spin a word, is a result of all of those frustrations and much of them got focused on KC.
  21. Remember Diamond was "pencilled-in" as the #1 guy for the 2013 rotation by most posters. Things can change fast.
  22. I believe because they viewed the KC signing as a copout--another cut-rate, Band-Aid, to give the appearance of trying to solve the "pitching problems" while reducing the payroll. There has been very few statements in the past year or so about the payroll differences between 2011 and the present, in TD, but it was a hot topic before the start of this season. Posters expected (demanded?) that better pitching be signed than KC. If KC had been the 3rd "best" FA pitcher (at the time he signed) he probably wouldn't have been maligned or certainly not to the degree that occured. Also, KC was derided as another PtoC, "Twins'-type" pitcher which most posters blamed as the source of the "pitching problems". Basically, he wasn't "the guy" and thus was incessently flamed.
  23. Every other team knows the Twins have several veterans with expiring contracts. The perceived negotiating leverage in trading Suzuki (and the others) is impacted by that fact.
  24. You must have a link to a different article than the one I read. To the SOX, AJ was an outsider, he didn't help them win the Series last year. The SOX stink this year-- AJ's fault? No. Aj's sin? He put his nose in his cell while the game was played (probably poorly played). Oh my, how arrogant. He didn't stand up and sing the fight song of the SOX--Bad AJ! There are in MLB, not highschool, and not yah--rah--rah. Might AJ have mentioned he rejected a two-year contract (at approximately the same annual rate) with the Twins--and that the Twins were closer to the playoffs than the SOX? Probably. Might you have do the same? BTW, how many have posted that the Twins should trade some 30+ year old (who won't be part of the solution) in order to permit a younger guy (Prospect!) play? I have read many posts advocating just that. So if that tactic is right for the Twins, it seems logical that it would be right for the SOX--even if AJ were the surrogate mascot of the SOX and led the singing of their fight song every game!
  25. WHOA! Who are these impact players--and do the Twins have an excess of them to trade?
