  1. Makes me wonder why Hughes wanted the incentive placed in his contract? If the money wasn't important enough to earn then why ask for it?
  2. That's the point--to demonstrate that failure has consequences. When a player fails, he is often demoted to the bench or the minors--or is "designated for assignment"--FIRED. It is disruptive and it sends a message.
  3. I disagree with most of you. Hughes should go "all Kyle Lohse" on Gardenhire's office door and demand to pitch this weekend. Hughes simply shrugging-off the $500K bonus indicates his attitude. He requested (demanded?) this incentive be included in his contract and now an attitude of "I don't care"? What else doesn't Hughes "care about"? TWINSTALKER mentioned pulling Hughes (Friday vs Cleveland) after 7 innings and 90 pitches. Why is this arbitrary "pitch-count law" all that important? How many other games did this happen? Later in the same Cleveland series Corey Kluber was allowed to throw 120 pitches in order to complete 7 innings! Yet another indication of the flaws in "The Twins Way".
  4. I read the paper too--and immediately concluded that all four ideas were not mutually exclusive. While adding the aforementioned Latino coaches the team can also provide copies of Rosetta Stone with a note saying "get all the help you need and learn this"! They can also provide basic computer skills and a book on statistics for baseball. Replacing Gardenhire is a must--but not if it's someone who quotes Gardenhire and TK--it has to be someone with a fresh attitude. Patience is as long as next season--win enough to show the corner has been turned and playing to win the division at the end of the 2016 season will happen. The definition of "ace" is fluid and a name must be acquired--and so must someone who can transform Nolasco into someone consistently useful. Fixing Nolasco's problem would be huge.
  5. It seems to run counter to being "a player's manager" and not allowing a valued player the easy opportunity to earn $500K.
  6. My guess is that Sunday's game won't impact the post-season and Hughes can make a relief appearance. In fact the Twins might use the "emsemble approach" for the whole game if it isn't "meaningful".
  7. Speaks volumes doesn't it? Anybody who was committed to winning the World Series would run, not walk away. Even during the "fat years" ownership would make a cheap mid-season addition. Gardenhire would be aware of that and would know that if any future team was "making a charge" after the ASG that only token help is coming. He has a really cushy job and has displayed no willingness to "move on and cash-in on previous success". Complacent management doesn't not lead to success.
  8. Some of that "bad talent" is in the Front Office (they scouted and signed those players) and some of it is in the dugout. The rest is in "the panelled corner offices".
  9. These guys read from a script, they don't express oringinal thoughts. What was heard were "trial balloons" bantered around trying construct a line-up that contains Gardenhire's and Ryan's favorites. What should be illuminating is what we're not hearing--signing more free agents.
  10. So Gardenhre still manang the Twins... (new line-up).
  11. That turkey was stuffed with $49MM--it's impossible to be hungry.
  12. Remember when "... the top minor league system included Arcia, Hicks, May, and Pinto"? But somehow Vargas wasn't in the mix. I have become sceptical concerning proclamations about the minor leaguers. But Badsmerf (so did Pohlad intimate the same earlier this season) statement that "prospects don't win games..." speaks loudly. We have to see the results on the major league fields.
  13. The key isn't a "Fitzgerald" in the organization--it's having a "Clint Hurdle".
  14. Dateline: September 26, 2015 The Houston Astros are celebrating winning the National League Central Division. They were led by their recently acquired start pitcher Ricky Nolasco. Nolasco, (20-5) was acquired from the MInnesota Twins in December 2014 for some bits and pieces, with the Twins agreeing to pay half of Nolasco's salary.
  15. An indication that the problems are systemic rather that caused by one guy (Bill Smith) or two (pitching coach).
  16. My impression is that when Nolasco returned from his "elbow issue" he started throwing many more curveballs and not so many cut FBs. His results improved. Play better defense behind him--and his results with furthe improve. Watching Arcia in the OF is painful.
  17. Cleveland is playoff-relevant because they have a solid rotation and just enough hitting/fielding. Arcia is definately expendable. He "burps-up" almost as many runs as he provides. Plouffe? How many tis did the Twins play past Game 162 without a "solid" 3B? Enough to trade him for "good" starting pitching.
  18. Consider how insulting that comment is--"...fans are usually idiots." These are the people giving their money to the Twins. Without them, the baseball team has no reason to exist. I will ask are the fans idiots beausethey have different agenda than management? Or, because they continue to spend their money on a company that considers them idiots?
  19. Everyone from DSP on down is in defend the status quo mode. I this team was driven by PR Gardenhire would have been replaced. That change would have sated the bloodthirst of the fans and netted at least two years of patience for the new order. Defending the status quo will only continue the trust of the fans leading to ever-declining attendance. The end result will be Kansas City-like--on a Saturday nite game vs the Twins this August KC had an attendance of 17,000. A (then) 1st place team, a beautiful Saturday evening and only 17,000! That's what ignoring the fans will do to a team.
  20. I shall respond to the bolded statement. Recall that thread that raised the rhetorical question about hether the Twins should play to maximize winning or losing? I responded winning. I wanted to see what this team can/will do with a huge bench and with most players needing to showcase their positives. If playing Suzuki is part of maximizing wins in September--then fine--provided that a failed end result will be used to management changes. If everybodies job is secure (and by now only arrogance would support that), then playing to win meaningless games at the expense of youth development/challenge testing is counterproductive and foolish. I guess will have my answer in a few weeks.
  21. It is management's job to "teach its players how to conduct themselves." Sign players to perform, let the coaches ad the manager "teach" and enforce the rules.
  22. But then it is normal for the Twins to rest the starting C on an afternoon game following an evening game. Thus, there are no tea leaves to read because Pinto is starting. Escobar still has a shoulder problem, so playing Santana at SS isn't eye-opening. It does yield the conventional: a CF in CF, SS at SS, but for some reason has Hermann in LF rather than Parmelee. I guess "two outta' three ain't bad."
  23. Might that have been a scripted tete` de tete`? One where the opinion expressed is not necessarily held by the speaker.
  24. How any years did ittake for Perkins and Nathan to become competent relief pitchers? Did they spend time in the minors in the transistion? How old were they? (Younger?) Were they paid anything close to $5 MMat the time of their conversion? Pelfrey is a one-pitch thrower. He doesn't miss many bats and he's too old to place in the minors to be retrained/requalified. Plus, there is no reason to think he would accept his change--ala` Correia. As posted earlier there is always looking for a cheap starter--so find them and make a deal. Let someone else pay to retrain Pelfrey as a relief guy.
  25. The Twins could just award Suzuki his incentive money and not play him.
