  1. Raw numbers don't tell the whole story. WRT advertising, the most prized group is 18-49 females. People over 50 aren't all that relevant. It is clear that the Twins wereot-negotiated. There might not be as many (much) competition in the MN market.
  2. It sure seems like there is something not mentioned that is germane to the payroll discussion. Since there have been several opportunities for Ryan and other Twins' executives to expand on the subject it seems as if they treat the "payroll subject" as off-limits to discussion.
  3. I'm thinking that not hiring a manager to serve 10+ years is a good thing. Molitor's age and background strongly imply that he wouldn't be around 10 years fom now in any circumstance. If breaking the "job for life" system is a consequence of selecting Molitor--I'm for that. Fresh is good: A fresh set of eyes, opinions, evaluations, philosophies, strategies, etc., keeps everyone on their toes.
  4. Sign somebody who projects as a top of the rotation pitcher--or promote from within and use the cash to sign the best position player practicable. Whichever term you prefer, foundation-stone, tent-pole, "the guy", etc. is the type of player who can most help this team--now and in the future.
  5. My take: Ryan wants to "modify" Molitor's opinions--and hasn't heard the right words. As far as "wanting 'it' bad enough", that could include "how to do 'it'." Perhaps Molitor will bend only so far?
  6. If the Twins aren't announcing their new manager the day after the WS ends--there was a delay!
  7. A problem with the "fire in the belly" personality is that said energy is a double-edged sword. When things go well there is an exuberance--but when things "go South", things snowball into an avalache. The baseball season is a marathon and a team (and its players) need an even-keel. A grinding approach of 6 of 10, followed by 6 of 10 etc rather than the streaks that were common in the past. The Twins will soon become a team mostly populated with players with limited ML experience (if they aren't already that!) and a firm, steady hand is needed. But one thing that must be dealt with quickly is the acceptance of losing. These "swoons of August and September" must stop.
  8. I disagree. There are lots of different ideas expressed in forums like this one as well as others.
  9. "A combination of what the front office deems as the right pieces and what a manager would deem and how much he can delegate those pieces." This explains the delay in selection. The struggle for control over the complete dugout, players and coaches, and likely philosophy as well.
  10. Did anyone refer to Johnson as a "Carp" pitcher? It appears that Ryan hasn't lost his "touch" when it comes to money at the lower end of the scale for players.
  11. I thought the Twins have umpteen relief pitchers in the pipeline. Have a cattle call starting in mid-February and see who sticks.
  12. I think Ryan has major reservations about Molitor: 1) Molitor wants more input into personnel decisions and 2) Molitor (with Twins managerial experience) represents too much of a threat to replace Ryan. Mientkiewicz either hasn't said the "magic words" yet, or Pohlad has "given up" on Molitor just yet. Lovullo, I think is the "compromise candidate". He represents "the outside".
  13. Any more rumors you want to spread?
  14. Overcrowding?!? There is no such thing! The Twins have a dearth of OF. Arcia: Liability on defense, strikeout machine, and low OBA. Despite his faws he is he surest bet Hicks: Failed twice as a starter; desperation says he gets a third (and final chance). Skepticism reqd. Schafer: Cut from the same cloth as bench players--a true reserve Santana: An infielder pressd into the OF because Hicks failed, he was stained in ST as not ready for SS He belongs in the INF Parmelee, Colabello, Hermann: Ceiling is #25 on the roster--PH and emergency use only. The Rest: Minor leaguers at least a year away--most won't make it. There is a big need for an OF.
  15. Yes! He improved Oakland substantially, and when he left there was a huge regression. Cespedes is an impact player--the guy!--in the middle of the line-up that can be built around. The young hitters will get more good pitches to hit. His defense will play on a Twins team, and he has proven leadership ability. There are people that can be exchanged.
  16. KC also traded Grienke, before they were even close to being a playoff team, and they obtained quite a haul! But also consider it had been 28 years since they had a playoff game when they made the trade with Tampa Bay.
  17. This has been typical for the Twins--many chances for marginal talent. Especially if said player had "the mark of special" on his forehead (came in a trade, 1st round draft choice). Plouffe owes his career to the "many chances" provided policy. I think part of this is due to preferential treatment, part due to the overall lack of talent in the organization, and the rest to resistance to admit failure. I don't expect this will change any time soon.
  18. It seems to me that this thread is about looking backwards. A one-year draft to serve as a single data point. What does it really mean? I infer the following: the Twins found two players to fill gaping holes in their roster--spots held by impostors of major league talent. (I do hope that they continue to improve because there is ample room for improvement). Apparently Bill Smith didn't completely destroy the franchise as has been alledged on these boards. We should hold that thought when evaluating his performance--oops, he's already gone? Oh, well... .Even college players progress slowly through the Twins system. But, it's not clear that that is a good thing. Whatsisname's grade of Twins performance? I place it right after my 8th Grade English teacher's grade I received in relevance.
  19. Make two lists: 1). Why Rosario could be the next LF on April 1st There is no incumbent. Gardenhire (and his aversion to rookies) is gone. We have been prompted that there won't be a "surge" in payroll for 2015. An oblique admission that the Twins are "sorta punting" in 2015 as far as contending for the playoffs. A dearth of competition in the OF. The unexpected success of Santana in the OF implying that internal evaluations might be too conservative. 2). Why Rosario won't be on the Active Roster April 1st Rosario doesn't have the requisite AAA success and time, and this is inconsistent with stated policy. The Twins like to "challenge" candidates by delaying promotion to better moivate them. Delaying promotion (if long enough) can extend team control and delay arbitration. Delay promotion as an addtional penalty for the substance abuse. New manager may have his own favorite.
  20. Compare "the long season" or baseball, to your favorite musical act. They often have long tours. How would you feel if you had shelled out major dollars and they just went through the motions?
  21. I think they were [mostly] truthful--there is a salary cap, the team is run as business not for amusement, a tacit admission that 2015 will be "punted", and a not very subtle dig at Mauer. The newspaper article highlighted the salaries of the highest paid players, and the percent of (planned) payroll that each player represents. A bit more reading between the lines causes me (and I hope most others) to conclude that the FO believes they are: sorely constrained by Mauer's contract, that it is the fans' fault he was signed to this elephantine contract, and they can't wait to be rid of said contract. See, it's our fault, that the Twins are in this mess.
  22. Run differential over 162 games isn't the be all/end all statistic--just compare wins and losses, since that is what really matters. If the FO really cares about selling more tickets--give the fans the entertainment they (we) are paying for--wins and excitement. Clear out as much deadwood as possible and play the top prospects as well as the currently proven talent. Add a marquee name veteran (trade, free-agent, whatever). Go big or retire.
  23. An apt summary. What will the Twins do? Answering that question begs another: "Who is the real Trevor Plouffe?" Is he a "foundation-quality player?"--the type used to build a team around, or is he "a building-block player?" A complimentary player to the "foundation-types". All of these "Trevor Plouffe" questions need an answer. Based on the "payroll thread" story, the Front Office has established the acceptable range and Plouffe rates to get a very substantial pay increase after he reaches unrestricted free agency. A decision to pay or trade is soon forthcoming. We [as fans] have watched the Twins "make-do" with the 3B position for long periods. Is Plouffe "the guy" at 3B or not? A great deal of salary allocation is in the balance based on the answer to that question.
  24. My how everybody wears the roseiest of rose-colored glasses with respect to Sano. I recall many comments about Arcia ("...he's gonna mash!...") before he was promoted. I will kindly refrain from repeating those about Hicks.
  25. I no longer think Molitor is the frontrunner. Methinks he has a different vision than the Front Office.
