  1. Some people are in love with the concept of "a power arm"--to the point of overlooking the other elements of pitching.
  2. No surprise here. His skills show this is his best utilization, and it dovetails with the needs of the organization.
  3. How does Molitor's statement compare to Gardenhire's statement (years ago) that "...re-signing Nick Punto is the #1 priority this off-season..."? Equal? More or less definitive?
  4. Making the reasonable assumption that some of the bullpen aren't "lights-out, shutdown", Meyer should be promoted to the Twins to see if he can provide value. If Meyer succeeds--great! If, he fails--say "Next", and place next year's 27 year-old on the "suspect" list. If there is room on the 40-man roster--keep him him, else outright him to Rochester. There are many "arms" in the Twins system.
  5. Develop? His job is to pitch one inning using his fastball--the same task he performed in college and so far 1-1/2 years in the minors. This isn't brain surgery--do it this year or get filed with Alex Meyer.
  6. I think it was Comcast (and not FOX) that did them in. The wouldn't allow a channel to be allocated for a "Twins Network".
  7. I guess we can thank our stars that we Twins fans don't have a fat Panda at 3rd. "As far as a return for Plouffe...". I limit my dreams to a white Christmas.
  8. This thread reminds me of a TV commercial that's currently running: Guy (TD poster): he isn't a very good magician [GM] Woman (Pohlad): No, but he paid my claims (dividend check) in a day! Guy: WHAT?! So I guess it boils down to the definition of "winning".
  9. None of you mentioned Molitor's line concerning "...what if the opponents have a nasty RH pitcher..", and that's why he wants Mauer batting third. I laughed until I choked--because if they have that guy the Twins are dead anyway, and wherever Mauer bats is irrelevant. But I would bat Mauer first.
  10. "Is the system broken"--implies that there was some finely-tuned machine. The Twins were succeeding in a weak division--Cleveland was torn apart because they couldn't afford their top players anymore; KC was a rudderless sailing ship with two broken masts; Detroit was totally abysmal for the first half of the decade--until the owner tore-down the structure and rebuilt with an enormous amount of money; and Chicago which had some good people and good players wasn't a finely-tuned machine either--though they did manage to win a WS once. In short, the competition bar was lower for the Twins than most other teams but [some] fans look nostalgic on the success and others point-out that post-season results were almost a complete disaster. However, the owners did get that tax-subsidized stadium and can stand on an aircraft carrier and declare "mission accomplished". Success is in the eyes of the beholder.
  11. Trevor May never came close to the success of Duffey. May's poor 2014 would have permanantly banished him to the pen if Santana wasn't suspended for 80 games last season. Even during that period, May was simply a younger version of Pelfrey.
  12. Nolasco will be paid $12MM this year, next year, and then receive a $1MM buyout--he's in 7th heaven--not trouble!
  13. "Late Bullpen Additions Don't Appear a Priority"? No! They wait until July to see if: they want someone who is available at an acceptable price--rather than commit to an also ran.
  14. Comparisons to Pujols make no sense--he was not available. Cleveland had need for a proven power hitter and Davis was one of the very few available. Comparisons are valid against any of those other available power hitters.
  15. "...need a superstar big bat..."--are there any teams that don't need one of them? "They are a key injury away..."--I'm guessing there aren't many teams that wouldn't be deeply affected by one. In fact, I think the Twins fall squarely in that class that needs a superstar big bat and most definitely don't need a key injury.
  16. It's not rushing--he's dominated every level he's played at. The next level is AAA. Evaluate him there. There is no need to bring back the failures like Quentin, Mastroianni, Sweeney, Benson, etc. and hold a spot at AAA for any of them. The OF prospects of the Twins are many and they need to be challenged by climbing the system to see if they "have it". There is absolutely no need to salvage wrecks when the pipeline is full. I don't know if Walker will succeed or fail--but decisions need to be made on which prospects are the future--and which need to be moved to another team in hopes of filling slots elsewhere in the organization. Wait too long--and the guy becomes untradeable for anybody of value.
  17. It would be foolish to ever play Walker at AA. It is (past) time to advance Walker and challenge him to force his way unto the Active Roster. Enough time has been wasted on the retreads and never-were's from the dumpster. Focus on those in the system and challenge them--if they fail, they fail. There are plenty more "prospects" in the sea.
  18. This revelation is fishy to me. What is the purpose of raising the point now? As opposed to when the symptoms first appeared--or after Joe retires? Are we to conclude that the symptoms persist?--or no longer present?
  19. If ABW succeeds in Rochester the same as at the lower levels, he'll push Rosario to the 4th OF--unless the Twins made a trade! HR sluggers are very trade-able anf for some very useful pieces.
  20. "...essentially the same team..."--No. I have posted frequently that Gardenhire should be fired--years ago! (and to take Andy with him). But, the addition of a bona fide hitter in Sano, the addition of Jepsen, E. Santana, and Duffey was a demonstrative improvement over the 2014 team. You must compare apples to apples for the 2014 and 2015 teams. "Essentially the same team.." implies a neglible difference in personnel, the use of team statistics is comparing the collective performance. If team performance is the criteria--simply compare the W/L records which is a distillation of all of the team peformance(s). In summary, the addition of Sano, E.Santana, Jepsen, and Duffey were substantial changes (improvements)--and the 2015 team was indeed much improved over the 2014 team. Though, I will claim that Molitor and his P.C. also contributed significantly to the 2015 team's improvement.
  21. My how memories have faded-- three catchers, 13 pitchers, endless SF bunts, trips to the mound after a BB, "play everybody" one day a week, If a substitute starts instead of the regular--he bats in the same line-up spot, Cf is the designated player for the #1 slot in the line-up, DH is never an assigned role--it used to rotate players... .
  22. So, Stewart = Blackburn the Second ? Woo-Hoo!!
  23. Let's see: Ryan finagles the September lineup to prevent Buxton from playing; causing Buxton to have (one less) too few plate appearances; causing Buxton to maintain his "minor league status"; causing Buxton to continue to be evaluated as a "prospect"; causing Buxton to be rated as the #2 "prospect", causing the Twins minor league system to continue to be very highly "rated" (third); causing the Twins management to proclaim how full is the "pipeline of prospects"; causing TD posters to be giddy with glee and excitement; causing them to give thunderous salutations to the Twins' management; causing everyone to forget that Buxton would be exactly the same player, with the same future even if he had one more PA and the Twins would have had the same team, albeit with a lesser grade to their minor league system. EGADS!
  24. NO! Omit the extension and Hughes has several years of success as a starter including the especially good season with the Twins. May has one month of stink in 2014 and 3 months of mediocrity in 2015 as a starter.
