  1. More than the option year, calling him up in September would leave one less spot to protect a player on the 40-man in December. If he is likely to start next year in AAA regardless, probably not worth it.
  2. Only 40-man roster players would be subject to trade assignment waivers, so a team could trade lower level prospects if they wanted. Of course, as you note, it still rarely happens that anything worthwhile is sent back in an August deal. Hollins for Ortiz was an August trade many years ago, but of course no one trades prospects that recklessly anymore.
  3. Wow, only a game and a half above of the Braves. And 5.5 games below MLB's third worst record. Seems like a safe bet we will pick second in 2017! Need to go 14-19 or better over our remaining 33 games to avoid 100 losses.
  4. The AFL thing is an interesting question, I guess we should find out fairly soon...
  5. I thought the gentlemen's agreement was more like, don't claim unless you think a trade is likely or unless you are blocking another team from making a likely deal? And if the Twins asking price is known to be high, no deal for Santana is likely and thus a claim would be meaningless and not be made. For an extreme example, would anyone bother claiming Mike Trout?
  6. I continue to think otherwise. Would Oswaldo have rather cleared waivers two months ago, and lost that MLB service time and accompanying benefits? Absolutely not. These players want an incentive for teams to keep them on the 25-man/40-man roster as long as possible. They don't want that incentive removed so they wind up in the minors faster, even if they might complain about the headaches involved with moving around.
  7. I see you posted before they updated Dean's season stat line to include last night's game.
  8. I got the joke, obviously. I just thought it also prompted an interesting question about Herrmann which I hadn't looked into before.
  9. Some of these, you might not want to count before they hatch. Also, might not want to lead with O'Rourke, the guy who cleared waivers a couple months ago and could be a minor league free agent in a couple months. Also, while this looks like a decent list in absolute terms, how is it in relative terms? I would guess every team in baseball has found and developed a handful of guys who have produced as much as O'Rourke, Tonkin, and Vargas to date. And a guy like Sano probably would have made MLB no matter what organization he signed with. From results it seems pretty obvious that the Twins have not done well at producing MLB talent above their peers recently, hard to argue with that.
  10. The triples were kinda the main reason folks expected Rosario to regress, no? Also, how is Park not a bust? Maybe not top 5, but he has to be a considered a bust for 2016. Even if you think the wrist was a factor, you considered other injury cases as busts. Also, Nolasco only failed to bust because he set expectations so low in 2014-2015. I have to imagine anyone picking him to bust were predicting a continuation of his 2014-2015 performances, which was mostly true.
  11. Would it help if the 21st one was yourself? Only joking -- the system doesn't allow that.
  12. Don't know if you're aware, but TD has that feature: http://twinsdaily.com/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=core&area=ignoredusers But I'll try not to give you any more reason to use it!
  13. Wait -- are you referring to Rochester here, or Minnesota?
  14. Rosario had some pretty good results in the pen, before a tough debut at AA. Landa's numbers are definitely "meh" for the FSL. Since his all-star break, Melotakis has 22 K's in only 12.1 IP. That's encouraging, even if the other stats are "meh". I wonder if they will shut him down when the minor league season ends, though.
  15. Good point! Park is getting a big league salary regardless, and service time doesn't matter for him, so I would hope that they do this, almost regardless of who they call up.
  16. You can't enjoy an internet message board without learning to look past some of the posts/posters (present company perhaps included ).
  17. I hope the new GM doesn't make a major move like that right away based on the recommendations of the old scouts / front office / coaches that are responsible for producing the current MLB staff.
  18. Didn't mean to sidetrack this thread, it was a joke. If you want to discuss it further, there is a Suzuki thread.
  19. Pressly has been only marginally better in run prevention under Neil Allen as compared to under Rick Anderson (and a lot of that might be due to skipping AAA for his Rule 5 season). He's also not part of any "core" (I hope). He's a career 118 ERA+ middle reliever with a league average K/9 this year. He also turns 28 this winter and is arbitration eligible. I'm surprised to hear that about Kintzler, I don't see why more teams wouldn't have offered him a minor league deal. He had a solid track record before losing most of 2015 to injury (a solid track record which suggests his real "improvement" under Allen hasn't necessarily been all that great).
  20. I wasn't judging anyone solely by ERA. Sorry if it wasn't clear that my two sentence fan message board post was not intended to be a complete analysis of the issue. It was intended as a tongue-in-cheek response to a point in an older thread, that trading Suzuki could be disastrous for our pitching staff the rest of 2016. You could even view my comment more charitably, that our pitching staff was plenty capable of being disastrous with or without Suzuki.
  21. Correcting myself -- the first time since rookie league in 2013. The larger point still stands, Garver and Turner were not teammates during the 2014 or 2015 seasons.
  22. Maybe Mauer needs to move to Colorado? FWIW, Morneau actually suffered another concussion in 2011 along with various other maladies that year -- check out his injury history at Baseball Prospectus: And by the next year (2012), only 2 years removed from his big 2010 concussion, Morneau's performance had pretty much stabilized around ~107 wRC+ where it has stayed over the past 5 season, with the one exception of his first year in Colorado when he reached a 121. (He's even at a 107 again this year for the White Sox.) Mauer certainly has the talent to have another little spike season like that, regardless of concussion recovery. For a little while it looked like 2016 might be that season, but he will probably need a strong finish now to achieve that.
  23. Actually Herrmann has been on the DL over a month, preserving his small sample OPS excellence! And FWIW, he has by far the best "catcher ERA" of Arizona's 3 primary catchers this year, which is obviously not a terribly meaningful stat without context, but it's worth noting that Herrman has caught a fairly proportional share of Shelby Miller's 7.14 ERA innings, and also Herrmann is the only one of the three not to catch Greinke this year. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=p&team=ARI&year=2016#catch
  24. Actually, they didn't promote them in lockstep. 2016 was the first time Garver and Turner played at the same level, and it really couldn't be avoided -- neither one was ready for AAA to begin the year. In fact, it appears the Twins went out of their way to push Turner a level ahead of Garver. Now, I could see a case for divvying up the catching reps different while they are both in AA this year, and promoting Garver to AAA before August, but those are relatively minor items in the grand scheme of things. As long as one or both of them are getting notable reps in Minnesota for September, it will be hard for me to complain.
  25. Agreed on the former, disagreed on the latter.
