  1. Normally I'd engage this question on the merits. But today I'm just incredibly steamed about Matt Capps, so I'm here to coin and propagate a new phrase, and I hope you will all help me with the effort. To wit: Matt Capps - he puts the "loser" in "closer." I'm sorry to be non-productive here, but this is just ridiculous and I'm frustrated by the predictability of his poor performance. I think it was fairly evident before his injury last year that he's not cut out to be a closer in the true sense of the role. Capps is the exception that proves the rule for closers - that being a closer on teams like the Pirates and Nationals, which were terrible, terrible baseball teams at the time he pitched for them, substantially reduces the level of pressure on the closer so as to render the distinction of "closer" meaningless. Sadly, I hate to admit, at the moment that exception might apply to the Twins themselves. But it reinforces the rule - if we want to compete, we need a real closer, and that's not Matt Capps. (Topic for another discussion, which I'm specifically not addressing here, is whether it's worthwhile to overpay for a closer under any conditions).
  2. Actually, it appears it is just opportunities. Here's his career RISP numbers: AVG OBP SLG OPS .340 .454 .501 .955 Those are simply spectacular numbers. Not only does he hit with RISP, he hits for power with RISP. Those weren't pulled out of anyone's "arse," those are Joe Mauer's actual numbers. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7062/situational;_ylt=AkLCX14M8cmgKQUd3YFSqTyFCLcF?year=career&type=Batting Edit to add: stats calculated from data on the page linked above, of Mauer's 511 career RBIs, 419 of those RBIs were with RISP. That's 82% of all of his RBIs. In 2008, he was the AL leader in Sac Flies: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/2008-batting-leaders.shtml Bottom line, it's clear that when Joe Mauer has had opportunities to drive in runs, he's done just that at a very, very impressive rate. Edit again to add: Not that it matters remotely, but I'm nowhere near a "20-something," so before you try to get back on your high horse...
  3. Does anyone really think, after the sample size we have, that Liriano will ever be "mentally comfortable"? I sure don't. He's proven time and again that when it counts, he struggles mightily, and usually fails, to keep it together. He should have been traded on any number of occasions over the past few years. I fear that now it's too late, and we'll continue to see this production out of him throughout 2012 and he'll sign on a minor league deal with another team next year and, probably, fade away completely. Bummer.
  4. I agree on the mechanics, but I think his failed mechanics results from mental problem. His mechanics are often great in spring training, and progressively terrible in the regular season. He's a head case when he steps on the mound in a regular season big league game. As I mentioned in the game thread last night, I think the correct diagnosis is "bi-lobal brain weakness".
  5. Well, sure, but... Nick's article is all about using the waiver wire to bring in pitching that might be useful in rebuilding, and at the least would be no worse than the marginal bottom-dweller pitchers we have now in terms of immediate usefulness. In fact, he specifically states that rebuilding is his recommended strategy in his conclusion: "if they can bring in . . . young [pitchers] with a chance to fill a need for years to come, that would be a big win." This recommended strategy aligns perfectly well with your comments about bringing up position players, yet position players haven't really been our main problem this year. We can bring up all those prospects you mention, and they may indeed field their positions well and potentially hit the cover off the ball on a regular basis, but that won't address the Twins primary need now and in the future: pitching.
  6. Nice work ending that 3rd base threat, Mr. Maloney!!
  7. Bi-hemispheric brain weakness?
  8. As soon as he exploded on the scene, we should have been working him as a closer. Maybe, just maybe, he'd have been able to keep his lid on for an inning a game. Regarding giving up on him this year, no one would take him unless we covered nearly his entire salary, given how he's pitched to date.
  9. jfc! Most frustrating starter. Ever. What a head case. 2.1 IP tonight. Nice show, kid.
  10. qft. Fire is the thing this squad tends to lack. Good to see it from the players.
  11. Watching on gameday. Why did they get tossed?
  12. I called Perkins injury on Saturday! Ugh... Sort of, depending on where you are. They're oddly expensive in much of the US, but that's because of our (terrible!) health insurance system, and not because the raw cost of an MRI is actually very expensive in and of itself. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/why-an-mri-costs-1080-in-america-and-280-in-france/2011/08/25/gIQAVHztoR_blog.html
  13. I agree that these comments are quite problematic. Morneau and "rust" is a perfectly plausible explanation, but this Mauer comment makes little sense. If I recall correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong), wasn't Joe saying the exact opposite about his physical conditioning when we were coming out of Spring Training and his BA was somewhere in the .350 range? Gulp.
  14. How long until we find out Perkins is injured? I don't honestly think that's the case, but given the luck we've had...
  15. I think it's got offense because it knows it doesn't have the pitching to compete, and offensive shows sell tickets. Clete Thomas. Meh. Makes sense from the Revere standpoint only, but sometimes I wonder why we're hanging onto Revere, frankly. We'll see...
  16. I don't buy that. Longoria was already a known prospect who hadn't had any trouble roughing up minor league umpires. No way the Rays were dangling Longoria for anyone.
  17. Maybe I'm misreading you because of the typo, but if not, this is just plain wrong. Willingham is batting .333 and has more HRs than Delmon thus far this year. His defense may be only marginally better (he's got a cannon arm), but he's been a better hitter this year and over his career, particularly in OBP, SLP, and OPS: Willingham: http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=425545#gameType='R'&sectionType=career&statType=1&season=2012&level='ALL' Delmon: http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=430321#gameType='R'&sectionType=career&statType=1&season=2012&level='ALL'
  18. Pizza Luce on 4th. Everything about it is good - food, beer, full bar, outdoor seating in warm weather, service. Didn't know Fulton tap room was open. Awesome!
  19. Whew! Still, Perkins time.
  20. If Capps blows this one, we should send him and Liriano out of town on a rail immediately after the game. Wow.
  21. Generally I have two beers and no food. I bring in peanuts or snacks from Candyland. Sometimes I'll have something, though, and I'm a vegetarian, so my choices are limited. But in that vein, I've found this (not completely up to date but still very helpful, user updated) website that tracks vegetarian food at the different MLB and NFL stadiums: http://www.veggiehappy.com/venue.htm
  22. What's missing in this analysis is the willingness of other teams to take Span in a trade. I think people are waiting to see if concussion-effects are truly cleared up. If the answer to that question is yes, and if Benson is prepared to step into CF by the trade deadline, then I'd be stunned if the Twins aren't considering moving Span. The jury is still out on both counts, however.
  23. Agreed. Hopefully Morneau, can get his feet under him at 1B so we have more DH options altogether. Mauer should take some reps in LF, to facilitate this. If Mauer can no longer be full time C, he needs to give us more than just 1B and DH as salary-justifying alternatives.
