  1. I believe we miss out on FA pitching for a variety of reasons, based on each pitcher. IMO, some pitchers will just go to the highest bidder, no matter what. Now, the highest bidders aren't normally in last place, so it's ideal for the pitcher to accept the contract for two reasons...money and winning; however, if a pitcher is all about the money, a team in last place willing to spend should be able to land that pitcher too. I don't think it's hard to imagine thqat there are many players all about the money. There are other players, say for example Vets who haven't ever been winners and are at a point in their career where they have less time left than they have played, that will discount more money to win. Some will value location (close to home, what have you). There are more factors, but you get the point.
  2. Based on what I've read around here, I have no doubt some believe all that post is true...or at least those who want to give the front office a pass on practically everything. That post basically is their justification for why we'll never get top notch FA pitching under any circumstance. For me, I'm guessing that maybe some of it is true...or, at the very least, has bits of truth in it along with other factors. That's just an opinion.
  3. That post was sarcasm...if you read it again, you'll likely see that. 4. Exactly. 3 time batting champ (no AL catcher had even one before him...no other catcher has 3). Has an MVP. 1st AL player since 1980 to led the AL in BA/OBP/SLG% (only catcher to ever do it). . Had a year this year right along career averages and led the major leagues in OBP. Hits great with RISP.
  5. How about Carew? Oh wait, Mauer gets him in OBP AND SLG%...
  6. He's been better than Correia the last three years
  7. And Marcum's ERA+ is like 112 over the last three years
  8. I was giddy when we got him and royally ticked when he was traded. :-) Heck, even in an injury year with us, he posted the best UZR/150 of any starting shortstop. Have always loved his defense
  9. For the record, I never mentioned the power part...the debate between you and I was only about whether or not Gardy had a big role in why Hardy was traded. I won't pretend to know the real reason why Gardy wanted him gone. But if we can put that aside, once Hardy got healthy (occurring in the 2nd half of 2010), he posted a slash line of .304/.363/.442. From a shortstop, that's pretty impressive. Wouldn't it have made sense to see what he had the following year since he wasn't due a big raise in arbitration anyway
  10. Tigers just got Sanchez...pitching staffs are getting stronger in the AL Central. Tigers, Royals, Indians (if you have faith in Bauer)....
  11. As I read around, it seems we are in a FA pitching loop. If we have a really good season, that means our pitching was decent, so we don't go get top quality free agent pitching to make our pitching even better, even if the pitching is available. Why would we? It was okay just last season. So we don't spend, even though we are an attractive spot for FA pitching, seeing as how we were winners. Now, conversely, if we have seasons like the last two, then we finished last for a couple years after winning for a long time, so no FA pitching wants to come here now matter how much we offer. Now, prior to 2010, if we finished 2nd, or 3rd, well, then we just didn't have the income of TF to compete with the big boys. There is always a legitimate reason we don't get quality FA pitching.
  12. Yeah, but I dig trashy :-)
  13. Of course he regrets it.
  14. No, that's not really what happened. You just believe everyone who presents an opinion on a topic that differs from yours is wrong and then, like a child, you take shots at the poster himself. You haven't proven anything I've written during our recent 'debates' as false....except in your mind. But if you wanna think that sure...whatever you say.
  15. Just to be clear, it wasn't ME you were calling a shameless, full-time Twins apologist, right? :-)
  16. Just a question...not trying to nitpick...but he became a FA for a bit if time before being re-signed in the offseason before 2009 season. So wouldn't this technically be part 3?
  17. At what point do the owners say 'these salaries are out of control, enough is enough' and a strike happens?
  18. I'm not sure...I'm not a big Dempster fan...but it seems like some view him currently better than Marcum and Jackson. If that's the prevailing thought, we should have a chance to sign one of those two for cheaper than what Dempster just got.
  19. Punto is ageless.
  20. Fangraphs has him at 2.9...for his whole career. For me, I liked his defense at 2B the last couple years. He cut down on the mental lapses. Overall, I think it was time for him to go
  21. For Bourjos? Not that I saw
  22. If you figure major league teams want to make sure they have a backup at every position in case of emergencies, and that Mastrionni is the only guy we currently have to play CF, then IMO, it means Benson or Hicks will have to break with the team...and whichever one does, probably is the starter with Mastrionni being the 4th OF. Would you concur? Or am I missing something?
  23. I'll take option three...not giving a carp what you think.
  24. Great defender, no bat. Who do we have that they would want for him?
