  1. It is a fine signing and I like the tactic but hopefully Harden's not the last. Certainly you improve your odds by pursuing these sorts with a little more gusto than Jr has to this point. You only need one guy to pan out to make them all worthwhile.
  2. Which one
  3. More proof that elite talent will sign anywhere if the money is good enough.
  4. Why take an asset from the Twins when you can take an asset from a division rival? This is a silly move on the Angels part, in my opinion.
  5. Latroy Hawkins
  6. Does Mickey Storey tickle your fancy? The 73-win Blue Jays plucked him off the waiver wire just yesterday. Alex Anthopoulos has been stockpiling these AAAA guys all offseason for almost nothing.
  7. Riberbrian is like the Joe Posnanski of Twinsdaily bloggers. Curiously long posts
  8. I looked into this as well after the Pelfrey signing. Pelfrey's was May 1, Baker's was April 16th or 17th.
  9. Well he has a MVP which should be good for at least 50% of the BBWAA votes automatically.
  10. Nap Lajoie in 1901 (Philadelphia A's) and Jeff Kent in 2000. (San Francisco Giants)
  11. I'm only skeptical that anyone's ethics are being broken. That's why I asked for evidence of a relationship between how the media covers these subjects and the slayings that occur later. It is premature to be talking about censorship until we actually understand whatever relationship may exist there.
  12. Getting an early 2-3 score lead sure helps. They can pretty much forget about run defense, put extra men on coverage to buy Allen & co. time to hit the quarterback.
  13. Whose ethics, yours or the merchants? Or do you expect all merchants to volunteer to a common ethic, and adhere to it equally in some religious fashion?
  14. Are you holding out for a religious awakening in the marketplace where merchants stop selling products that might make their customers unhealthy if consumed in large quantities? Or would you have this sort of product censored or served with a disclaimer?
  15. I think that's called marketing. And whether its effective or not in shaping consumer demand, the onus is still on each consumer to make responsible decisions. If someone lacks the little bit of mental fortitude or loses the self-control required to avoid these things, then you have an eating disorder. It still doesn't give you the right to make a moral judgment about cheeseburgers or go around closing McDonaldses.
  16. Are you making a moral argument or an aesthetic one? It is only the appetites of consumers the media is feeding, however morbid they may be. Until its determined that this food is actually unhealthy, then there's no moral argument to be made. And even if it is proved unhealthy, ie. it increases one's likeliness of going out and shooting people, you can't stop the media serving it outright any more than you can stop McDonald's serving cheeseburgers, I would think. Its a product of living in a free society, the bad with the good. Don't eat it if you don't want to be fat.
  17. Is there evidence that the media's coverage of these events is encouragement to subsequent slayings?
  18. Sure, toss him a minor league contract offer. Why not
  19. I don't see how Morneau is much of an upgrade over Mitch Moreland
  20. Heck I would be alright giving him 6/90 like he asked for originally
  21. Trout Callaspo Pujols Hamilton Morales Trumbo Aybar Kendrick Iannetta Not bad
  22. Game 2 in 2010 was brutal. Pavano had gone 6 strong and the score was 2-2. Pavano went out for the 7th (he had only thrown like 75 pitches at that point), and walked Jorge Posada. Then he fell behind Berkman and Gardy stormed out to argue with the umpire and was ejected. I was at the game, and the crowd had been roaring the whole game but after that, everyone was screaming. Then Berkman crushed a double to the gap in front of the bullpen. Jorge scored all the way from 1st. Pavano put the next two guys on base and Ullger pulled him. Capps gave up another run in the 9th for good measure. Mauer got on in the bottom of the 9th but was erased on a double play, Twins went down 1-2-3, having lost 2 home games to the Yankees, heading to NY for game 3.
  23. There was also a report that the Twins had offers "all over the place" yet the Twins have only been specifically linked to a few players - Liriano, Pavano, Saunders, Lannan, Blanton, Correia - basically the people TD are already on top of. Something doesn't add up.
  24. Multi year deal for a guy with a sore elbow and declining velocity? I don't think so.
