1. I guess its sort of understandable that the guy who assembles low walk, high contact staffs would like WHIP
2. If you get hit in the balls, do this: http://allwomenstalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/10-fab-yoga-poses/bridge_fab-yoga-poses.jpg Disclaimer: I'm not a professional doctor. Do skyward pelvic thrusts at your own risk.
3. I realize early season stats are volatile but I'm talking about a 5 year minor league track record in Parmelee's case. That should satisfy your sample size requirements. What is the great promise in Parmelee's future at 1B that we're willing to handicap a winning team for anyway. I think we're talking something between Ike Davis and James Loney, realistically. A 1B you can backfill for a couple million bucks at the end of an offseason.
4. What? No way. Unlike the rest of them, Doumit is actually hitting a little bit. He more than anyone is the guy that needs to be in the lineup everyday. edit: My memory is fooling me, lump Doumit into that group of sub-.700 htiters too.
5. Where is the logjam? The three guys competing for jobs at 1B and RF are all OPS-ing under .700
6. Antoan Richardson OBP-ing at .400 with 7 steals in New Britain. Just saying
7. Out of curiosity I pulled baseballprospectus's TAv charts for Morneau against RHP in 2012 to compare them to other lefthanded pull hitters against RHP in 2012. Morneau: http://i.imgur.com/JS3fT3n.png Ortiz: http://i.imgur.com/bGTvdYD.png Dunn: http://i.imgur.com/gAFu2Ln.png Pena: http://i.imgur.com/xl3HOJk.png Hamilton: http://i.imgur.com/ZF5xurU.png Maybe Morneau's plate coverage has been better than I thought. I don't really see any glaring holes compared to these other guys, in the small samples these are showing anyway.
8. I think the book on Morneau is out at this point. Away, away, away. He will never lean over the plate to keep a pitcher honest. Too gunshy after the concussions, IMO.
9. I can understand Philly but Bostonians have celebrated championships in 3 of the major sports recently. Minnesotans haven't had a championship for a generation, and pretty sparse success before then. Unless you're a nut for Gophers hockey I guess in which case you are probably a violently negative person even in celebration.
10. If you think this is bad, wait till August when the Bute makes his triumphant return to catch all these makeup doubleheaders. My brother was born on Christmas (Apr 19, 1983), he said he can't recall a single b-day with snow. Its a weird spring with a weird schedule, that's all.
11. Moral victory? I was thinking more about balls like one last Monday that sneaked right between his glove and his top hand. There have been at least 2 or 3 other balls that he got to, but he didn't get his glove on the ground so the ball cruised on into left field. Also, what precedent is there for guys improving their defensive play age 26 and older? Any at all?
12. Geez, why didn't they put a retractable roof on the Cell!
13. Sometimes I think Plouffe couldn't field a sharp ground ball if it hit him in the ear and dropped dead on the ground. And if he did field that ball, there would be the usual 25% chance he makes Justin jump off 1B to catch his throw. But for whatever reason, Plouffe seems to excel at fielding bunts. If this is actually the case, then its only a matter of time before teams figure out that they need to start bunting to 1B instead.
14. Chris Sale threw a slider to Emilio Bonifacio in yesterday's game that broke down and in so hard it ended up hitting Bonifacio in the inside of his right knee, right on the fat part. I think Bonifacio ended up scoring in that inning, Jays won.
15. JN, since 2013 is probably going to be the last year without a draft, might it be smarter for the Twins to leverage their big bonus pool and just spam a bunch of international signees? Maybe even, be the buyers in a bonus-pool trade scenario?
16. He might have been. If the Twins finish within, say, 5 games of a playoff spot after one or more of the regular 2013-2015 seasons, then what? What if instead of Greinke going down with injury in those years, Verlander or Prince Fielder does?
17. I was trying to scale the rates and totals into something digestible but maybe it was a vain attempt since yeah pretty much impossible to zip up the cumulative effects into a single statistic. Its all too easy to imagine a scenario like last night where Swarzak gets screwed out of 1 lousy strike and it leading to a 9 run rally and lost game.
18. Out of curiosity where did you get that info? Its a complicated question no doubt. There are also the merciful umpire and the ruthless umpire effects. So count has to be factored into the equation somewhere. If you have a strikethrowing staff, it woudl stand to reason that you are going to lose a lot more of those borderline 0-2 calls, and likewise, if your staff falls behind a lot, you might get the benefit of more 2-0 and 3-0 strike calls. But maybe Mike Fast and the guys at BP are already accounting for things like this.
19. Walks, followed distantly by Ks and slightly after that, hits. But, I skipped a step, technically. We're merely talking balls in p lay, not necessarily hits. But if you assume nobody strays too far from the mean BABIP, you can basically equate H% to balls-in-play%
20.
H%-P/IP Correlation -0.19166
More hits, fewer pitches/IP edit: But,
H%-ERA Correlation 0.655375
21. I don't think this logic is necessarily sound. For starters, the team objective is to minimize runs. So if you have to trade x number of baserunners (and runs) in order to gain y number of innings out of your starters, then you have at least ask, is it worth the tradeoff? Maybe when your starter gets ahead 1-2, the team would be better served by your starter trying to strikeout that batter every time, even if it raises his pitch count slightly.
22. Here are the correlations for the 128 qualified starting pitchers since 2010. http://i.imgur.com/PCrHeVi.png https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5pIzP28qdp-MzgxNVVNNlJ5elU/edit?usp=sharing Strikeouts will rack up your pitch count but the greater offender by far, is walks.
23. So that's 1.34 low pitches per half inning. 12 per game. Mauer gets 2.3 of them called strikes, and the average catcher gets 3.8. A strike and a half per game on average. yeah that seems significant.
