  1. Tigers win game one 4-1 behind 7.1 innings of 1 run ball from Anibal (we didn't need him). Tied 0-0 in the 3rd so far today.
  2. I've never watched May pitch but so far he is putting up reverse-platoon splits. Which suggests to me his changeup is getting lefties out but the breaking ball isn't working as well against same-handed batters. Trevor May at Minor League Central
  3. A juiced up Ruth against a bunch of non-juicers? Yeah that would be quite an advantage. Obviously not everyone juiced in Bonds' era either. And I can only guess how much of an impact the juice had on Bonds numbers, positively or negatively. But, consider this: Ruth hit home runs against 220 different pitchers. Bonds hit home runs against 449 different pitchers. Ruth hit 17 home runs against Rube Walberg, and 10 or more against 12 more pitchers. The most home runs Bonds hit against a single pitcher was 8 - Maddux, Smoltz, Mulholland, Glavine, and Chan Ho Park. 228 pitchers he faced and hit only 1 HR off of. He had interleague, international, integrated competition. Ruth is basically the greatest player in the Tri-county conference's history, whereas Bonds is a gold medal winning Olympian.
  4. Barry Bonds is the best hitter I've ever seen and its not close. edit: Well, Delmon's July 2011 was pretty good, but besides that...
  5. Cletus can't believe it!
  6. Low blow? Ok I'll go ahead and czech myself into the penalty box
  7. Fans really growned about that one. I think its safe to say not many are sticking around any extra innings to watch the Sox and Twins battle it out for 5th place
  8. I believe they call those "schools"
  9. That was such a bummer of a run too. "Wild pitch" on a changeup about 18 inches outside with 2 outs to go.
  10. Demoted back to the pen, Mendonca relieved Randy Rosario for 2 innings Wednesday. He allowed a double and 2 walks, while striking out 3 (2 swinging) and allowed no runs. Mendonca and catcher Bryan Santy combined to catch Blake Brown stealing 2nd in the 6th.
  11. All that is to say, when you're talking elite talents, an extra year does buy you more time to wait for an "off" year, if that's your strategy. But waiting could just as easily drive up a player's value further. Those years where a player is 25-27 are the prime after all. Whether you have the extra year or not, the real money is saved when you make those decisions well before a player reaches their prime, eg. Longoria, I think. Its less a question of service time and more a question of age IMO.
  12. That's a curious example. Instead of looking at a healthy 26 year old coming off an MVP, 1.030 OPS, 28 HR MVP season, they would be looking at a 27 year old who needed a 2nd knee surgery and had just seen his production drop back to the mid .800 range. So... 6 / 90, something like that?
  13. Sano's hit 30 HRs in 2013. His HR rate has actually climbed since being promoted. He's 20 years, 3 months and 3 days old. At this point is it safe to say Sano has the highest floor of any prospect the Twins have had since Mauer?
  14. I think he can. He is the only guy right now who features 3 good pitches, what he lacks is command. The exact opposite of everyone else on the staff (except Deduno).
  15. Oh don't forget Nick Blackburn. Obviously the Twins won't pickup his option but a minor league deal would interest both parties I suspect. Maybe he and KC can swap teams.
  16. Guthrie vs. Anibal game 1, Verlander vs. Shields in game 2. Davis vs TBD in game 3. Veras or Fister, I'd guess.
  17. Eno Sarris interviewed Kyle Lohse on fangraphs: Kyle Lohse: Teaching an Old Curve New Grips | FanGraphs Baseball Evidently Lohse learned to throw what he calls a Vulcan in St Louis. Basically a split fingered 4 seem circle change, looks like. Also ditched the 4 seemer like Frankie.
  18. I think that's realistic, probable even. Throw more good playing time after bad.
  19. I hear Bronson Arroyo is looking to get out of Cinci
  20. Hold the door - the Royals are broke? Why haven't I heard about this?
  21. Tanner was given the start in yesterday's game against the Danville Braves. The top fo the 1st went thusly for Mendonca: 1. Swinging strikeout 2. Walk 3. Line drive single 4. Walk 5. Walk 6. Walk 7. Swinging strikeout 8. Walk Tanner was relieved by Andrew Ferreira after giving up 3 runs and recording just the two outs.
  22. If the choice is between Dozier and Florimon / Escobar / another version of Jamey Carroll, I would prefer Dozier every time. His defense wasn't that bad last year and his bat is about a tier and half better than these other scrubs.
  23. I'm sick of hearing how the Twins starters need to get "quick outs." So, guys throw fastballs down the middle in pitcher counts and get shelled. Or, they pitch to the corners, and when that doesn't work they get blamed for "nibbling." The staff is supposed to "keep the ball down" but Mauer doesn't get those calls very much. When unearned runs get on the board, its the defender's fault for making an error, but not the managers for not employing any shifts. Its not even like the Twins strategy is PTC anymore. Its more like there isn't any strategy at all, or at least, not a cohesive well thought out one.
