  1. I think you're talking past me. "Extreme" is fine. "Not Islam," as Obama said, is dumb. ISIS may be extreme but its just as valid. An English speaking, Christian American president saying what is and isn't Islam seems like an incredibly stupid road to go down, that's all I'm saying.
  2. That depends whether you ask a Shia or Sunni. As I understand it, Islam started fracturing on day 1 due to debate about the true succession of Muhamed. I mean, consider all the various fractions of Christianity. The big one, Orthodox vs. Roman Catholic. Catholic vs. Protestant, and all the variations of Protestantism (and Catholicism, Orthodox). Its the nature of religion and more broadly, the nature of art and reading IMO. Sunni and Shia are just as fregmented I'm sure. ISIS appears to be another sub-fragment of Sunni, localized to the Syrian-Iraqi situation. With a fair number of foreign extremists and psychos thrown in for good measure. But ISIS's interpretation of Islam is not more or less valid than any other.
  3. IMO Obama and others who make claims about the "true nature" of Islam or any religion are barking up the wrong tree. Since Judaism, Christianity and Islam share the same scriptural foundation, that conversation ends with a claim about which is the "correct" religion. The Talmud, Bible, Koran are books like any other works of art and so the interpretation depends as much on the reader as it does on the content. When groups are united by a common foe or cause, that's when there is a fracturing away from the main vein of the religion and that seems to be all that's going on with ISIS right now, from my view.
  4. Interesting question. My first thought is yes but then, what about chili dogs? Isn't chili more of a sauce in that case? Does chili fit both categories of sauce and soup?
  5. The same author, written a year earlier: https://newrepublic.com/article/119395/isiss-three-types-fighters
  6. I saw the article when I googled ISIS. No I don't think all members of ISIS want to bring about the apocalypse. That is ridiculous. I think its likely there are a few hardcore psychos but I'm sure many/most members have secular aims and only ally themselves with ISIS to the extent that helps them achieve their goals. I really think the best way to make sense of the situation is to look at it from the perspective of self-interested parties, the apocalypse wouldn't benefit most of them.
  7. You think maybe its possible that a subset of Syrian refugees would buy into the theory that Europe caused, and stands to gain by, the sectarian violence in their homeland, and be angered to the point of attacking like this?
  8. After 5 pages of debate about Islam and terrorism, I asked (again) what our interests in the Iraqi-Syrian situation was, and was given an answer "to stop civilian atrocities." I countered with the link above suggesting that the US-led coaltion covertly destabilized Syria for the purposes of securing an oil pipeline to Europe. I am sorry if this was widely understood already, however if you search the thread for "pipeline," you wont find a return until my post on page 6. I admit I have my biases but am trying to make sense of a confusing situation and it seems clear that the Paris attacks have little or nothing to do with the Islamic extremism discussed so far. When you consider the attacks in that context, doesn't it lend a different light to them?
  9. Heh?
  10. If true, then our interests in the internal affairs of Syria and Iraq has nothing to do with stopping violence, nothing to do with anti-terrorism, and nothing to do with Islam. Our interest appears to be in securing energy for our European allies via a pipeline through Syria.
  11. That's a pretty naive take then. I think this answers my question: http://www.mintpressnews.com/migrant-crisis-syria-war-fueled-by-competing-gas-pipelines/209294/
  12. That isn't what I asked. What I asked is, what are our interests in Syria or Iraq? What business do we have there?
  13. Is ISIS a threat to China?
  14. I'm going to ignore the 2nd part of that answer. They are having a civil war, correct?
  15. Anyone?
  16. What exactly are our interests in Syria or Iraq at this point?
  17. Pass and pass. Sign the Final Boss instead.
  18. Wow, you have to be impressed by the sheer quantity of specs going back. For two years of Kimball? An equivalent package by the Twins? Maybe something along the lines of Minnydriver, Bunnhalves, Cabbagepatch, and either Gorgonzola or Copernicus.
  19. I'm not too worried TBH. In 2014 they were among the league leaders in OBP. Seems like kind of a fickle thing. I think its safe to bank on Mauer, Dozier, Plouffe, Sano and Escobar getting on at a .300+ clip and some improvement from Rosario/Park/catcher collectively.
  20. 33 year old Korean reliever coming to the US to interview with MLB teams. Looks like he throws at least 3 pitches, FB tops out at 97 according to MLBTR. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/seung-hwan-oh-free-agent.html http://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.cgi?id=oh----000seu&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-
  21. Maybe they still plan to sign a FA catcher. They lose control over the following catchers this winter: Fryer Pinto Herrmann (traded) Paulino One or more of those could re-sign as minor league FA's but right now it looks like there's a hole in AAA that Murphy could fill nicely in 2016 for the first half at least.
  22. Murphy has 1 or maybe 2 options remaining, correct? Whereas they burned Hicks' final option last season. If that's the case the trade gives them some flexibility to bring in another catcher in 2016 and/or recall Buxton and Kepler more freely without exposing anyone to waivers or DL-ing anyone (like Hicks).
  23. Eh-hem http://cdn.fansided.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/2/files/2014/06/mlb-minnesota-twins-boston-red-sox-850x560.jpg
  24. TR is on fire! 3/3 in my book. Hicks was growing on me but a rebalancing was coming one way or another. They needed to do this and Murphy is as good a target as any IMO. Good trade.
