  1. Feels like Polanco has been taking really good ABs, but he only had 5 walks in 21 games before today. I was going to say it seemed like he'd taken a jump with his eye but maybe that's not accurate
  2. Wow -- I love players with line drive launch angles. So many balls in gaps that fall for hits where Gallo can hit it 103 exit velo but he gets under it and it's in the air a mile high and caught. It's easy to see how he was such an XBH machine in the minors.
  3. Too bad for Varland on that last inning. He was clearly losing it, even in the inning before. Still, I like going to him to start the 7th.
  4. I think it's a good point that Buxton might not really be able to play CF any longer or they may not want him to. There really isn't another CF player on the roster or at AAA. I doubt they want Lewis to play there. Gallo could play there but that's not ideal either. Taylor is a role player. I don't think you can carry Taylor as your only CF. I think Gordon by that reason alone has a spot on the roster forsure all season this season. They likely could target another player who can play CF in the offseason.
  5. Ryan throws too many pitches. I think it would be Gray or Pablo
  6. These guys all of a sudden cannot swing and miss
  7. But why not just give him a Pineda deal and have him in the mix to try. I would venture it's still a better likelihood than the majority of prospects. There's basically no downside and only upside. It's not going to cost a lot.
  8. If he continues to hit at roughly his career averages before the Yankees like he is now then I think it's a great signing. I just don't think Gallo can be one of your 2 thru 5 hitters. I actually like him at leadoff because he generally takes decent ABs and gets on base at a decent clip and then will go through stretches of pounding the ball into the seats. I think in that world it's good for him to get a lot of ABs so he can roll the dice a lot of times to make the most amount of hard contact. If you have a better option at leadoffs I like him at like the 7th spot where it's fine when he goes through his cold stretches. He gets on base even with his lack of contact more than other bottom the order players and so then the power is just gravy. I think it really helps that he's a plus defender at 2 different positions and has that versatility.
  9. I would give him a Pineda like deal... why not. You can then move forward and plan as if he is not going to be there... and if he is great. He's clearly an above average SP when he's healthy and I would venture to say we haven't really seen him fully healthy yet.
  10. Great article https://blogs.fangraphs.com/joe-ryan-is-off-to-a-swinging-start/
  11. Did anyone realize that Ober and Lopez are the same age? And Joe Ryan is only one year younger.
  12. Excited to see Varland pitch today -- I don't think he has quite the profile of a Ryan or even an Ober who I think can be and have shown that they can be Pablo Lopez to potentially even Sonny Gray level pitchers -- but I do think he has good enough stuff to be a major league level pitcher. In some ways, his pure stuff looks better than those guys but it seems like there's something missing where he's more hittable, it's probably command/control.
  13. Not to mention once he got promoted to A+ in 2021 he hit .321 - .414 - .907. He was hitting XBH's rather than HRs so his SLG was .493. This means he's been producing like a top prospect for at least parts of 3 different seasons. To me, this should put him at least in the Wallner type tier of prospect. It's not like other Twins "top" guys like Rodriguez, Wallner, and others don't have K issues as well. His BB% has been like ~11-12% across levels over each of the last 3 years as well which isn't bad. I guess to be fair on the other side Wallner has been in like the 15-16 to 18% range which insane and E-Rod is at 21% which is even more insane albeit at lower levels (guy has a 57% K rate this year lmao).
  14. This is obviously not the way you can do this analysis, but this is fun with numbers -- so I am going to have fun. If you say that AK's 2022 should basically be removed because he was trying to play through a hurt wrist that never fully healed that sapped his power here are his career numbers: Totals 66g 19 2Bs 1 3B 10 HRs 37 RBIs 27 runs 20 BB's 55 K's Splits Avg - .265 OBP - .330 SLG% - .485 OPS - .815 BB% - 9% K% - 22% Per 150 46 XBHs (2b & 3b) 22 HRs 85 RBIs 61 runs *Because I am having fun with numbers I added another 2B to his line because technically he hit an XBH down the 1B line on his walk off that didn't count.
  15. Lopez is throwing 96-97 versus 98-100 so I guess weather or cold gun or something.
  16. Ober is a weak contact king. I also love the way he pitches inside of the strike zone with movement. I know that doesn't make 100% sense with some of the walks but he throws a lot of pitches that move from the middle to the zone to the corner instead of out of the strike zone and then tunnels pitches which I like. For those that don't like him, he's not an ace but I think he could be a great #4ish.
  17. I guess we'll see when the relievers come in.
  18. I thought Ober had upped his velocity to 93-95?
  19. Since we're talking pitching, I'm really excited to build around a Lopez/Ryan rotation. I think both of those guys are pretty similar and I love that they are tinkers that are adding velocity/pitches to their mix. This to me bodes well of them continuing to stay ahead of the current adjustment from hitters to their patterns. I'm also really excited about Varland/Ober as backend of the rotation options. I couldn't believe that Varland was throwing 97mph and Ober's stuff continues to get better. That is really close to an elite SP foundation locked up for multiple years. I think they have a number of options as well to fill out the rotation and have depth. We've seen this year what having 3 guys who are at least at a good #2 level looks like (Gray, Lopez, Ryan). I think in the regular season it's important to continue to try to have that and in the playoffs it would be great to find a guy who is in the tier above Lopez/Ryan but that's not easy to do.
  20. I would argue “if healthy” is the mantra with every prospect (and every arm). Tommy John isn’t really too different than an ACL these days. Either way, calculated risk.
  21. Law’s scouting report says that Prielepp could have been in consideration for the #1 overall pick if healthy and repeating what he flashed during his rookie year.
  22. What happened to Austin Martin's power? I certainly did original expect more; certainly if not HR power yet gap power. Was it a hand injury or a swing change or both? I still think that Martin could have a Polanco like evolution as a hitter going from contact to gap power to some HR power as well. Either way, his ability to get on base, contact skills, and speed is a dynamic that we probably really need on the major league roster.
