  1. Total numbers of pitchers vs. position players probably prove the point though. Teams are much more aggressive protecting pitchers which would limit the pool. But yes, if a team was motivated, they could make Michael work, but would have to be (imo) a team that has absolutely no desire to compete this year.
  2. This is a point that is often overlooked. Very easy to hide a pitcher, very tough to hide a position player with 4 player benches. And usually everyday guys that are kept bring at least one plus tool to the table (usually speed or d), not sure Michael really has this. Fine guy for org depth and may ultimately get some run as a utility guy, but a team would really have to punt that position to keep him all year.
  3. I understand Rosario, but don't really get Landa over Jorge otherwise. I do think it is a pretty small chance that Jorge is ultimately lost. They may lose others, but no one other than Jorge would bother me all that much. EDIT: I saw your velocity explanation. Seems legit to me if they had to make a choice of one over the other. Much better than my baseless injury explanation.
  4. I found that interesting too, I just didn't see Achter as much of a long term asset. But I suppose if you have roster space. Pinto is just unlucky, wouldn't be surprised if he carves out a little bit of a career, but will probably take another 3-4 orgs before he finally settles.
  5. No, this is speculation on my part in comparison to Rosario and Landa.
  6. I think Dean shows that Milone and Nolasco are gone in some way. Protects a little bit with starting pitching depth more than worrying about losing him as a LOOGY. The Rosario, Landa, Jorge aspect of the decision is probably based on things we have no way of knowing for sure (injury status).
  7. I imagine Jorge is not healthy. Rosario vs. Williams was probably the debate.
  8. I know this is potentially opening a can of worms on another controversial aspect of Hunter, but I thought it was very telling that Morneau showed up to his retirement press conference this afternoon. Perhaps that fight between the two was vastly overrated.
  9. This also strikes me as a possible outcome for Gardy too. I don't sense he is so pig headed that he wouldn't adjust to a new model of playing if it came from above. Have a bench coach that can help out with defensive alignments and other in game strategy and let Gardy handle other aspects of the job, such as being leader, keeping players motivated, being a public face for the organization. If he has talent he has proven he can lead them to plenty of wins. What happens after that...
  10. Agreed. Kepler wouldn't get at bats ahead of Vargas, who already is not getting at bats. Ditto for Polanco and Nunez (and possibly Santana). They are quite fine where they are playing every day in a playoffs.
  11. Croft has talent but is raw, as proven by his minimal interest from high major programs. He is not the answer this year. Leidner is what they have this year. He has his limitations but does some things acceptable, such as limiting interceptions. If he could limit (or eliminate) fumbled in the pocket he would be perfectly acceptable for a mid-tier college team. Obviously you want better and would love to upgrade but not exactly that easy. But as he proved on the last drive he can make some plays and certainly isn't rattled in the moment. Issues as big or bigger than Liedner in my mind are the overall lack of offensive playmakers and a line that is not as solid as it needs to be. These, and Leidner are what limit the ultimate upside of the team, but they can still win the West and play on New Years Day again.
  12. You do draw one important distinction though, in reality no pitcher has command without control. But of course the opposite can be true. I can always hit a dart board, but don't often hit the triple 20 I'm aiming for. I can certainly control the dart, but don't have great command of it. At least not until I have a couple more beers.
  13. With an offseason and spring I could see it. I'm skeptical they go into the season with a locked in DH, especially if they want Buxton to start in AAA. Most likely move is a Plouffe trade.
  14. Is this a guarantee of a Plouffe trade?
  15. Leidner doesn't exactly have tons of weapons around him or an especially imaginative offense to run. Can obviously upgrade there but that can probably be said about any position on the team. He seems closer to middle of the pack in D1 but he is going to take far too much abuse this year.
  16. I agree on Rosario. I think people will underrate some of his value because he is not a conventional hitter both on poor bb/k rate and power from 3Bs and 2Bs. Good on defense, value on the basepaths and hitterish. His big asjustment will be dropping his k rate more than increasing his bb rate. I think that is doable.
  17. Why the urgency? Good chance that 2 of the 4 start at Rochester next year and also a good chance that any of them could bust. Good to have quality depth.
  18. That should probable be mike's avatar by now.
  19. And think about the previous 50 years. Cleaning up and rebuilding a mess takes some time. Kind of like a baseball gm.
  20. I like the list, especially giving the relief guys a chance at some redemption and to get someore looks to see if those catchers might contribute. Walker seemed a no brainer too.
  21. Don't sleep on Cle, they strike me as the team most likely to catch the Twins/Rangers/Astros. Makes the schedule tougher.
  22. I might look at it the other way. They call him up now, give him a taste of the bigs in a bullpen role and then likely start him in the minors as the sixth starter. This would still manage his innings/stress a little and render any service time issues moot. It is very, very difficult to break into the majors as a starter on opening day and expect to make it through the season. No matter what happens in September Berrios should be eased into the rotation at the start of next season.
  23. I will never understand the Berrios and May* handling, self inflicted wounds that could very well cost them a playoff spot. I don't get as upset about trades that didn't happen (because who knows all the details) or hesitating to call up mediocre guys (hasn't exactly burned them) or the Santana/Escobar situation (it was at least a defensible plan that failed), but this makes no sense. No reason to waste his bullets if he is coming up. *And by May handling, it will always be the spot start, not necessarily moving him to the bullpen in the first place.
  24. Because for the rest of the season Pinto (rightly) isn't going to be allowed to perform the most basic function of a third catcher. Might as well make Mauer the third catcher.
  25. Agree with this list. That's all the Twins need. Listening to Molitor/Antony on Sunday it seemed they wanted a 3rd catcher, pinch runner, pop off the bench and some arms. This fits. Hicks will be back in a few days too.
