  1. I assume those two things have blended together.
  2. It was pretty much an embarrassing effort for 2015. Ryan absolutely should have snatched up one of the rentals. 2 relievers should have been the minimum. He might think he can wait until August but it could easily be too late. All that said, I would still say (and think basically everyone agrees) that giving up a legit prospect or prospects for a rental would have been mistake. Good for Toronto for going for it but they have a significantly different calculus including a GM that might be fired. Nothing to lose by pushing all in, let the next guy clean up the mess if it fails. If it succeeds he gets an extension.
  3. Looking at it closer I think next year had much to do with that decision.
  4. Your first thought is not accurate. Those guys are more 2/12, 2/15 or even 3 years. Of course you can get equal production if you sign the right minor league guys, but that is far from a sure thing. People are saying having Jepsen next year for $5mil is some burden. It's a fair price and probably explains why the value seems a little higher relative to the rentals.
  5. Burton and Fien then had significantly less value than Jepsen did today. This talk of sell high on those guys is nonsense. Whether they should have traded Perkins is certainly a valid question.
  6. While true, 4 of those guys don't have value right now.
  7. I don't see a significant glut anywhere - yet.
  8. I think Molitor has different motivations - he still has to manage the current 25 man roster, and can't have it out there he is asking for a trade in case something doesn't happen. If he was honest he would probably say "Get me some bleeping relievers yesterday"
  9. Clearly in hindsight it wasn't lopsided, and for many it wasn't considered lopsided at the time. Part of the value was that Shields only had 2 years left, so they wouldn't be paying big money for a diminished player like people think will be the case with Tulo in a couple of years.
  10. Or to wait is to have an untouchable prospect because he is so good. That's the fun of prospects.
  11. Funny how you provide a critique and a rebuttal to own critique in a sentence.
  12. I think realistic goals is to be in the hunt for the playoffs most seasons and then to aggressively push when the opportunity presents itself. They are well aligned for the first part going forward and don't think this is the year for the second part.
  13. Weighing the potential negative higher than the potential positive might just be prudent and accurate. Same with any decision. Just because you and other don't agree with the decision doesn't mean Terry Ryan necessarily is practicing Loss Aversion, you might just be wrong in your calculations.
  14. The consequences are 100% the point. There is no potential loss by people on this board for calling for an aggressive move so it is basically impossible to consider loss aversion. If Ryan actually executes it and it backfires he loses his job, perhaps permanently. Also explains why Toronto did it, if they don't make the playoffs the GM is likely fired, so he really has nothing to lose. If it backfires and he gets fired someone else can clean up his mess. Incentives, perverse and otherwise, all around.
  15. Probably not a radical position to think people weigh costs and benefits differently. Plus it's much easier to be reckless in thought when there are no consequences.
  16. Will be interesting to see how he does going forward and if the Twins blew it.
  17. Agree, but it often means trading legit prospects for rentals. I don't think the Twins should do that this year. I would be in favor, right now today, of trading legit prospects for guys with multiple years of control and significantly less risk/money than someone like Tulo. I'm skeptical that trade is out there at the deadline.
  18. Maybe. But those are unique types of gambles. I think we both are looking for a more aggressive approach with a disagreement on timing.
  19. I actually don't think it shook out that way, much more mixed. I think it shook out more along the lines of people thinking Tampa could do no wrong. We could go back to the thread and look.
  20. The best evidence I can cite is his aggressive free agent signings this time around compared to his last tenure. Obviously a mixed bag as far as results but can't really dispute the change in thinking. I also hope he has a real chance to prove me right too. I just really really don't think it is prudent this year to do more than add a few smaller pieces and see what happens.
  21. I would argue we still can't make that decision on Ryan. Comparing a pre Target Field to post Target Field situation is comparing two different realities.
