    Pretty sure Arizona would put him in the majors! You're kind of a two trick pony eh? No one moves fast enough and the Twins can't develop talent.

    I would say Ben Revere. Young, cheap, controllable, elite up the middle defender and developing into a legit leadoff guy.

    I think the injury might be causing people to overlook Rosario a little (or perhaps the other 4 are that good). If he can legitimately stay at 2B he is a potential beast. Since that is uncertain I am comfortable with him being at #5. I really like Arcia but I still have him after Hicks. I think he is going to be a solid corner OF and a decently high floor. I am betting on Hicks developing into a defensive stud in CF that gets on base and has really good speed. Also, everything I have heard from Twins officials seems to be talking up Hicks more than Arcia. I know Hicks is older, but I will stick with the up the middle athleticism.

    Jim Callis today (in Ask BA) was asked to do a top 10 and put Buxton at #9 overall. I personally would put Sano ahead of Buxton...I imagine Sano was not far out of the top 10.

    Boo f'ing hoo on this. If the Republicans didn't pass this in the first place to have a vote for a constitutional amendment to protect a law that was already on the books none of this would be an issue. The Republicans were as cynical as anyone putting this on the ballot in an attempt to drive turnout for the election to possibly beat Obama (no chance now) and to hopefully bolster their own chances to maintain control of the Minnesota congress. I have no sympathy that it is turning around on them and they are being called out. It was partisan as soon as it passed along almost entirely party lines and was done as a run around the governor.

    I don't want to derail the post, I like a lot of about Gary Johnson. I really hope he is able to get enough support to get his message out. It would be great to have him in the debates on several issues, especially on the issue of the insanity of the drug war and a different way of looking at foreign policy.

    I didn't watch it but read the transcript today (with his ad libs), it was a pretty great speech. I read somewhere that with the speech Clinton more or less takes over the position of the elder statesman of the party (from Ted Kennedy). Seems about right.

    Yes. I have many memories of getting a group of buddies together and making teams and having a league and then losing it all when the game would inexplicably erase everything. That was always devastating. I still bust out the game from time to time, loved the World Powers. RBI was awesome as well.

    I like the talk but it is way early for this right? At this point last year was Buxton even really on anyone's radar? And he was the best player in the draft. Also, the college SS's that everyone was high on at this point ended up dropping quite a bit. People will emerge.

    One could almost infer there's a, um...financial implication to the skimpy number of callups, no? But to believe that might be a factor, one would have to conclude the Twins are more interested in making good money than in making good baseball decisions. I think this accounts for the failure to make any waiver deals when there were plenty of pick-ups available at little cost- except the cost of absorbing the contract. This is yet more suggestive evidence that the decision was made internally sometime after the Marquis/Capps/Pavano/Baker fiascos became realities and followed by Liriano's dump-off trade, that absolutely no more money was to be added to the 2012 payroll. Why would a team that is not contending want to take on additional salary at the waiver deadline? I still think the bigger issue is playing time. I would call up Slama instead of Perdomo, but there really are only so many innings to go around. Makes little sense to call people up to sit on the bench for a month. In case you haven't noticed, the team is utterly bereft of proven MLB SP talent. It's hard to envision they can have any semblance of one in 2013 with only the offseason to get it done. There were guys available in July and especially August for practically only the contract that could eat 200 innings next year standing on their head. Really? There were guys available for only their contracts that will easily pitch 200 innings next year? Please, please enlighten me on who these pitchers might be.

    On a team that spent large chunks of the year with an 8 man bullpen, and STILL managed to find reason to complain about the pen being "worn out" weekly--which team is now employing 6 starters--I think you can find some innings for a couple extra relievers. If nothing else, you save wear and tear on Burton, who they've been concerned about all year. This, like every other reason Ryan or anyone else has brought up, makes little sense if given even the slightest thought. Well, even with the 6 man rotation the Twins now have a 9 man bullpen without Slama, so I'm sure they are pretty much covered. Not sure there would be a ton of innings to be had even if they continue to protect Burton as much as they have the past couple of months. I don't want to argue too much because I agree that Slama should be up (instead of Perdomo). I just think a lack of available innings is a more logical explanation than cheapness.

    By far my biggest concern about Romney is his foreign policy. I don't care much about a candidate's experience but I do take notice to who he surrounds himself with and who the primary advisors will be. I see no reason to think it will be anything but neo-con on steroids, and no chance Romney would be strong enough to push back against the biggest excesses. I fear where that may ultimately lead, especially if the economy continues to sputter along. A secondary concern is fiscal policy. There is talk of cutting taxes being balanced by closing loopholes, broadening the tax base and cutting Medicaid/other government spending. This sounds fine in theory but no chance this happens in reality. Once Romney is President little chance he is strong enough to push through tough reforms that will upset large portions of the electorate. So, as usual, we will end up with large tax cuts disproportionately skewed to the wealthy with no cuts in spending to offset them. If you think the deficit looks bad now... I'm not all that excited for Obama either, but he will at least be relatively moderate to conservative (in the traditional sense) on these two key things that a President actually has control over. Gary Johnson looks better by the day, here's hoping he gets some legitimate traction (though I'm not counting on it).

    I like this way of thinking about it. Putting the first hurdle at full season ball and the second as the jump to AA. I think Hi A can be a decent starting place for a college player, but Michael was pushed pretty aggressively considering the fact he was on the young side for a junior and the fact he was injured for much of last year. Next year will really be the telling year for him. This also goes to thinking of having no problem with a prospect like Sano spending the whole season at Beloit, but to then be more aggressive the following years (see for example Arcia last year). After one full season it makes sense to be more aggressive when called for.

    Why do you think that? They are the same age and Santana clearly outperformed him in an entire year's worth of playing time. From the information that I have gathered from other sources, including tools and defensive reports. I have not seen either play and I am hesitant to judge solely on stat lines. Overall I am willing to give Michael more than one season before I jump to any significant conclusion on him, I still think he has a legit shot at being an everyday player.

    BA will rank Michael higher because he's a 1st round pick. That combined with the information they are fed from the Twins organization and from other coaches in the league. BA is not going to do rankings solely on the status of the player when they entered the system.

    I thought Slama and Guerra would get a look and don't understand why they felt the need to bring back Perdomo. Don't have a huge problem with any of the other (non)moves. Arcia and Hicks would have been fun, but realistically there wasn't a ton of at bats available for them. Despite his performance in AAA, don't have a huge problem giving Escobar a look, Dozier will get his chance again next spring.

    I'm always a little hesitant to scout from and draw any type of grand conclusions simpky from a stat line. I think there is much to like about both players but Michael has to be considered the better prospect. I will be curious how BA ranks them this offseason.

    I read a little more on this and Carson would not necessarily have to spend 10 days in the minors but would have to stay until the end of the season of the affiliate he was sent to (which may end up being 10 days), which would mean the Twins would be short for another 5 days if Carson was the only OF they wanted to bring up. As I said I would be in favor of calling up Hicks, but they wouldn't do that until New Britain was done with their season.

    Phew! Now I feel better. I've been losing sleep wondering how we were going to get Carson that extra three days to play. Also, I'm not sure if this is true. I don't think the 10 day rule applies once September 1 rolls around. The bigger issue is that reading more it appears that Span might be done for the season so they figured they might as well have the extra player for tomorrow. I didn't think it did either, every year someone sends someone down or calls someone up on the 31st so they can be on the playoff roster. I remember the Twins doing it in the past and don't ever remember another move were someone went down for 10 days. And what I was getting with Carson is how they made the move now rather then wait to the 3rd, had no problems for the last 18 days with a crappy bench and all of a sudden they make it sound like they can't wait for Carson. The playoff eligibility aspect of August 31 doesn't matter anymore either. They changed that rule recently. None of us know the whole story but I wonder if they kind of waited on Span, listened when he said he was almost ready and finally got fed up with him. He had an MRI that showed nothing significant. There is undoubtedly problems with prognosis, but I'm not sure what else the Twins and training staff could do here. I have no problem waiting on the DL if the player is back within 7-10 days, and if Span kept stringing it along, they were kind of in a difficult place.
