    This is a conversation that has been had before but I'll throw it out there - I'm relatively pro-PED. I think they keep players healthier and allow them to play longer at a higher level, two outcomes I support as a fan. I don't especially care about modern players breaking records that were set by players hopped up on greenies or that played in segregated eras and I don't buy the argument that PED use by major league players will lead to increased usage by minors. Beyond those two arguments, why should I care what an adult does to their own body? That said, I'm not against efforts by baseball to get them out of the game, but the moralism of media and others drives me insane.

    If Sano and Buxton progress as they should and they make a good pick at #4 it will be a top 3 system no matter where Hicks and Arcia end up.

    He's talking about how the park is settling into more of a pitchers or hitters ballpark and whether it is "fair". He answered in the context of the RF fence being too far and if it would make sense to move in fences. What he did not do was suggest concrete had any negative impact on the team compared to the opposition. That would be a problem.

    I have no problem trading Willingham but I question his value in the offseason. Probably similar or even less than Span. Teams will be hesitant to acquire him for the same reason we would want to trade him. If he stays healthy and produces close to last year he would probably have more value than he does now. It is reasonable to wait.

    This is a pretty good summary of my position on SS. Im not defending their record or making excuses but trying to understand what they have done and why it has failed. Just saying they have done poorly or saying they have to get someone better isn't that interesting to me. I'm also not convinced adding slop to the current slop is all that helpful - they already have Carroll for that role. Might as well see what people have. Not expecting much from Florimon but Dozier and/or Escobar could surprise.

    I would love to hear what value you think our veterans currently have and how it would remedy the current SS situation (or any other organization weakness).

    I would trade Perkins in a heartbeat if it filled SS for several years. I don't think he has that kind of value.

    I'm not making excuses, I'm stating facts. It has difficult to find good SSs, and I was more talking in the realm of what Brock suggested. I will not defend their inability to develop a SS. 2004 - SS in first round (Plouffe) 2005 - two SSs in the second round (Kelly, Thompson), SS free agent (Castro) 2008 - SS free agent (Everett) 2009 - two high priced SSs in international market (Polanco, Sano) 2010 - SS in trade (Hardy), SS in second round (Goodrum), high priced international market (Pimentel) 2011 - SS in first round (Michael) 2012 - SS on waivers (Florimon), SS in trade (Escobar), SS free agent (Carroll) This is the best I could think of resources (high draft pick, trade, international above $750k, free agents, waivers) off the top of my head used in an attempt to acquire SSs in the past 9 years and that doesn't include lower round picks (Dozier) or lower priced international free agents (Santana, Beresford). They have put resources in, I'm not sure why they haven't been able to develop a SS out of this mess (outside of the one year of Hardy). Trading the only two respectable SSs the team has had since Guzman for minimal return is probably not another feather in the cap of Bill Smith.

    Sure. But no combination of veterans on the Twins could get one of those prospects.

    Actually I am. I can't conceive of a package that would get a Texas SS or Bogaerts (who isn't ready anyway). Iglesias might be available but will be expensive and doesn't really have a bat to make one forget Florimon. Am I forgetting someone?

    I appreciate the hyperbole but would question your assertion that the "vast majority of teams" have a solution in place right now or even in the timeframe mentioned.

    Terrible trade and I thought so at the time. But it has little to do with Terry Ryan or options available this offseason.

    I'm quite aware of who was available as a SS this offseason. I'm not convinced any of them are clearly upgrades over Carroll. As far as trades are concerned I can only think of five that moved. Reyes which took a boatload, Y Escobar with questionable makeup, and the three that went Arizona in trades that were regarded as bad for Arizona. Is that your solution?

    It's also not 2003to anymore. There is a serious shortage of high quality SSs in baseball right now. I appreciate you mentioning several hall of famers but those are relatively rare and hard to acquire.

    People realize SS is a pretty difficult position to fill right? There aren't clearly better players sitting on the free agent market or on waivers or any other means that have been mentioned in this thread. I imagine Terry Ryan would gladly welcome a better SS but it is a little more complicated than saying "let's get a better shortstop."

    If that is the best alternative we can come up with I'm not that offended by Terry Ryan not adding a SS.

    Anyone else getting worried about this. I have three main concerns: 1. The public financing component is a joke. The electronic pulltabs are falling fall short of projections. There is no clear backup plan. 2. There is new rumbling that the Vikings are not so keen on having a baseball configuration option for the stadium. That would put a big damper on the usefulness of the new stadium compared to the Dome. 3. This is most controversial, but I still believe that football is at its peak right now. I don't think it will suddenly collapse but I feel it will start a slow decline as more information about head injuries and long term damage comes out, and people start paying less attention and parents will be less inclined to let their children play. There will always be interest in football but I question whether it remain as high to justify the enormous scale of the stadium and public cost that comes with it.

    Pelfrey probably left the Mets for many the same sort of reasons that Baker left the Twins. Despite your news flash, it is pretty uncommon for players to stay on teams if they have to take a pay cut unless it is done either before the season ends or at the end of the offseason (when there are few other options).

    If he is good enough in spring start him at the big league level. If he struggles they can send him down for more seasoning rendering this whole service time issue moot. If he is good enough to stay up the whole year the Twins would sign him to an extension long before he hits free agency. People whine and gnash teeth about sending guys down after they have been up and how that is messing their development but the hysteria here is vastly overblown. Most players have to take some lumps in the bigs, go back to AAA to work on adjustments and then come back much better.
