  1. You guys ran with my point on the role of the beat writer. They report news and gather quotes, not offer constant opinions. They can provide some context in their stories but have to limit the editorizing. If you don't like that I'm sure the papers will miss you. I can only imagine the amount of money that you invest in papers. They are a business, part of what they have to sell is interest in the team so people will buy papers and continue to follow the team. Doesn't mean they have to be lapdogs but constant negativity wouldn't be all that successful of a model.
  2. Probably as long as people think any of those moves would make much of a difference in attendance this year. I agree with you that they made their bed, but only in the sense that they have sucked the past two years and the organization is in pretty bad shape as far as young talent in the majors is concerned. That is what keeps people away, not signing Correia instead of Saunders or Marcum.
  3. Actually Boras does sign pre-arb extensions, especially for pitchers. Money has to be market price, he won't give a discount.
  4. I'm definitely thinking doubles/triples more than bombs for Michael.
  5. Two problems. The state didn't contribute any money and payroll is higher than the last year in the Dome.
  6. If only they signed Saunders, Marcum and another middle infielder - ticket sales would be through the roof!
  7. You don't really understand the job of beat reporter do you?
  8. People really need to stop with the Boras stuff. Just because he is the best known agent doesn't mean he does stuff that other agents don't do or won't do. He's a good agent with great knowledge of the market and CBA but he still ultimately works for his client.
  9. I highly doubt this - they would have no chance. Federal courts aren't going to intervene on collectively bargained issues.
  10. I like the Michael call as well. He was young and he battled injuries. Needs to show more pop though.
  11. That is probably a good thing for him in the long run. I like Pelfrey probably more than most but it does seem a little too quick.
  12. I think the Twins are improved and play better than the past two years and end up in the low 70s for wins. Even with this they are the 14th team in the league. I think Houston goes way low and much of the rest of the league is bunched together (to a point), more parity this year than usual.
  13. There already are reports out of Chicago that Baker will not be ready for opening day. Perhaps the Twins are being too optimistic with Pelfrey but that is an interesting contrast between the two.
  14. This is what I see. I think he is a reasonable back of the rotation guy but I can't see much more. He lacks a true out pitch, but could eat innings thanks to his ability to control average pitches.
  15. As everyone knows the Twins certainly have the money to re-sign Morneau. I also don't think it is unreasonable, depending how things go this year, to expect competition by 2015. A two year extension to Morneau puts him in that window.
  16. I also think just looking at the ranking can be dicey. There is still some context about the prospect that is important. For example on the Twins Hicks is going to be a major leaguer of some sort while it is still quite possible Buxton never makes it. I would imagine very few of the busts listed had success at AA. BA tries to balance their rankings but I would find it interesting to dig further in those numbers to see what the rankings are with corresponding levels and what that might tell is. It would be enlightening as to how we view the current state of the system.
  17. This is exactly right and precisely the reason that if Hicks is the best player in the spring there is no reason to send him out. If he is good enough to stay the whole year I would assume the team would want to lock him up long before he reaches free agency. If they do this all the machinations to get an extra year of control would have been pointless.
  18. Might have something to do with the country they reside in and the amount of winter league ball they played.
  19. I think it would be a terrible role for Herrmann to break camp as a third catcher. He could use the defensive reps and at bats playing everyday in Rochester. I still think if either Doumit or Mauer gets hurt Herrmann will come up to take their roles while Butera would stay in the third catcher role.
  20. To which I would respond how many times in the Gardy's tenure did he have players good enough to play every day in the infield? And during those times did he move them around constantly?
  21. He is a marginal major league regular. It is not uncommon to struggle the first go round, the key is the adjustments he makes this offseason. It might help that he is at an easier position.
  22. The same as any other manager. I never understand posts like this. Is it Gardy's fault that he barely hit and struggled with routine plays? I guarantee Gardy would love him to come up and seize a middle infield position but should he have a lower threshold than any other major league manager?
  23. I would be be all over Appel if he fell. Seems like they should end up with a college arm unless someone really emerges.
  24. Gibson is healthy and 20 months from surgery. He can go full bore in the rotation. If he earns a rotation spot let him do it and worry about innings later.
