  1. How are they "wasting" an option year? Should he be in the majors right now? He had to be on the 40 man or they would have lost him.
  2. You bring up two important things here. The Cardinals are definitely the model the Twins should strive for and attempt to copy going forward. They are good in all aspects of being a strong, consistent organization that should have sustained success. The second point was about the Twins being conservative. Yes. And as you said this can be good and bad and also frustrating for a fan. I personally wish they were more progressive and strategic over conservative and methodical but both methods can and do work.
  3. Maybe. Most likely the Royals will flip Shields next deadline and recoup some of the value lost (a la the Brewers and Greinke getting Segura and others).
  4. I agree with this. I would not want to Twins to do this last offseason but I thought it was a worthwhile gamble for the Royals at that point in their franchise's trajectory. It looks like it might not work out, but more because the young players didn't take a step forward. This could be a worthwhile gamble for the Twins to take in 3-4 years, but makes little sense as the franchise is in the process of moving on from some veterans and trying to break in younger players.
  5. I would suggest the best pitchers - ie those with the fewest question marks and an expectation to be good for several years - very rarely hit free agency in their prime years. Maybe one every 2 years. So when you examine the biggest contracts for pitchers they will skew very heavily towards extensions with maybe 1 or 2 good free agents and the rest bad free agency overpays.
  6. I don't mind being opposed to your constant misery but this isn't about "sides". I think we all want the Twins to win, but we have some different opinions on how to get there. And I do hold the team accountable. Even though I generally agree with their plan and have confidence in Terry Ryan, I spend much less on the product than I would if they were a better team. That hurts much more than all the comments on message boards combined.
  7. This is flat out not true. Last offseason Myers was a top three prospect and Sano and Buxton were not at that level (primarily because of distance from the majors). The Twins didn't have the arms either at the time of the trade.
  8. Plus it's not about the money, it's the years. Morris was a one year deal. And the obvious other aspect is that Morris was signing with his hometown team. Might have swayed him in the type of contract he would take vis a vis Sanchez or Greinke.
  9. Oxtung - research or not I fail to see how advocating for more free agent signings is helped by citing extensions. The large majority of good pitchers are locked up before free agency. That is why the supply is so low and costs so high.
  10. I promise a full update soon.
  11. Many baseball experts are saying the Twins right now are similar to the Rangers of 2007 or 2008. And I can promise the Rangers didn't give 5 year contracts to pitchers at that point. FA is not the answer, but no one is against it to fill gaps or provide stopgaps while waiting for prospects to emerge. I like to think this argument is about signing a big ticket free agent this past offseason. That would not have been the answer.
  12. The Rays have made the World Series and have been competitive for the past five years. That would be nice. But that is beside the point of the Twins right now, that was a reference to the way the Twins operated pre-Target Field. Texas has a TV deal about 5x the size of the Twins and services a bigger market. They are only a slight drop off of the NY teams, LA teams and Boston. Bigger than the Seattle, St. Louis, Atlanta tier that the Twins are in. For your last sentence, I am merely responding to the examples that you cited. The Twins signed 5 free agents for 2012 and 2 this past offseason as well as assorted minor league contracts that have eventually made the squad. They do sign free agents and utilize free agency in pretty much the same way as the teams you mentioned. Other teams that are in a similar situation as the Twins of coming off terrible seasons and in similar market sizes (Colorado, Seattle, etc) that you left out also did pretty much the exact same thing as the Twins.
  13. I disagree with your assessment that prospects are being blocked. We probably won't agree on this.
  14. Hicks and Slama have nothing to do with each other for a variety of reasons. I challenge you to do more than read a stat line when analyzing minor league players.
  15. Who is talking about "decade-long stretches"? No one would accept that.
  16. Last offseason they didn't have one comparable to Myers, much less plenty.
  17. I personally don't expect them to use "saved" money and I also expect the payroll to be lower next season than it is this season. Still doesn't mean that signing Sanchez this past offseason would put them in the playoffs this year.
  18. I know that the Twins could fit it in to their salary structure, but $18mil/yr (at minimum) for a #3 seems a little steep. He has never pitched 200 innings in a season and generally has mid 3.00 eras with 7-8 k/9. If the Tigers weren't world series contenders/favorites I'm not sure this would be looked at as a good signing for them. I wouldn't want the Twins to outbid that.
  19. Texas is in another league financially, but I think the other teams mentioned by you don't prove your point. None of those teams have ever signed a free agent pitcher to 5 or more years. And I would guess Atlanta and Washington might be regretting their BJUpton and Werth signings right about now. The other aspect to consider is that the Twins have only been in this company since 2010, with payroll close to maxed out in 2010 and 11. Before 2010 the best Twins comparison/model would be the Rays. Who was the last free agent of consequence that franchise signed?
  20. Free agency has changed massively from 20 years ago to what we have seen in even the past decade. There are complaints to be made and different approaches that have been argued about, but you are really comparing two completely different scenarios. And now the Twins should be outbidding the Yankees as well.
  21. You think money is the reason Terry Ryan didn't trade for Shields?
  22. This. Plus, what exactly is wrong with trying to do right by the AAA affiliate? Obviously you don't want to hurt the big club or block prospects in AA for an extended time, but does this move, or any other the Twins are currently doing, fall into this category?
  23. Outside of Parmelee playing and Gibson not up I don't have a huge problem. And each of these will be remedied soon enough.
  24. Sanchez is a five year deal. Pitching great now but we'll see if he is doing the same in 2-3 years when the Twins window starts to open
