  1. I don't understand your point here. Owners filed for bankruptcy to expedite sales and protect assets. The health of the franchises was never really in doubt.
  2. Hindsight in the sense that no one predicted a shoulder injury one year into the five year deal. Not really hindsight to suggest that signing a player now would lead to a scenario that said player would be less effective when the team was ready to compete.
  3. Darnell and Deduno for sure? And no, the Twins will not go into next season with those players mentioned as their top 6 starters.
  4. Maybe the Albers talk will quiet a little bit.
  5. Reading through this I think that people are much more likely to nitpick defense when they watch a player every day compared to what they remember of past players or how they think other players perform around the league. Also, defensive metrics provide limited guidance (at best) in comparisons to other players. With Hicks I am still going to trust the scouting reports. I also find it a little funny that some people dismiss the possibility that Hicks will get better on D as he gains experience.
  6. No, they weren't jerked around (with the possible exception of Bartlett being left in the minors a month or two longer than he should have been). Each of them didn't produce enough and a team fighting for a playoff spot were not in a position to be as patient as the Twins can be this year.
  7. Not necessarily. His salary is $14 mil this year and half seasons of corner bats aren't often in huge demand at the deadline. I guess it depends on what you mean by "decent".
  8. Hi A to AA is the hardest jump in the minors.
  9. Correct. There are many valid reasons to not re-sign Morneau but concern it will hamper other signings is not one. The Twins could sign Morneau and two solid starters and still have payroll go down from this year.
  10. Because WAR is a flawed stat? Pelfrey is probably the "R" of that equation despite what numbers might say. The fact he has actually thrown some innings and even been effective on occasion makes him more valuable than Baker.
  11. Your quiz missed the point of why the teams are in different situations at the moment. Active or not the reason for improvement is internal improvement perhaps spurred on by a new manager. This is often how teams take jumps from one year to the next. It is how I suspect the Twins will be better next year.
  12. Twins are in a somewhat unique situation. Morneau, Carroll and Pelfrey are the only free agents and none have much (if any) value - and there is a realistic chance that the Twins might want to keep Morneau anyways. I would also argue that despite the poor record they can realistically be on at least the fringes of competing next year so they shouldn't be in a hurry to trade away assets that can help with that push.
  13. I'm not as down on him either. He is young for a college draftee and has had some injury problems that stunted his development. If he can just stay healthy the rest of the season that would be a big step. I agree that a utility guy is still hos floor. That can ve a useful piece.
  14. So you think the franchises were in a similar talent situation at the end of last year? I would disagree with this assessment.
  15. Definitive answer on what? If fan reaction played a role in not trading Willingham?
  16. Terry Ryan did this offseason pretty much exactly what I thought was prudent last offseason. I thought there would be 2-3 starters signed, one of those coming off an injury, one acquired in a trade, some cheap pickups to bolster the bullpen and that would be about it. Things I would have done different: -I would have signed one more pitcher. They were in on Saunders and perhaps others but failed to close the deal. -I would have signed Marcum and McCarthy. Neither of those would have been better than Correia as of right now. I think many of the other pitchers others have advocated for were unrealistic. I thought Pelfrey was a worthwhile risk if they had signed one more free agent. -I would have signed a one year stopgap CF once I traded Span and Revere. However, looking back at the options there wasn't really anyone better than Mastro and Clete. I don't think he punted the season as much as he wanted to get the young guys plenty of reps. Ultimately the reps of Hicks, Arcia, Dozier, Parmelee, Plouffe, Gibson, Pressly/other bullpen arms are more valuable then a handful of extra games that might have been won with some free agents in those positions. I give him a B+. I thought the plan was sound but I thought they could have been a little more strategic with how they acquired pitchers.
  17. I could be wrong but I can't imagine fan reaction would be worse after a Willingham trade than it was after trading Span and Revere. I think it had much more to do with return, production of the player, and what was available to replace them.
  18. Serously Diehard? Misogony?
  19. I like targeting Josh Johnson and Phil Hughes. But even if they sign both it does show the problem with free agency. They would be nice pitchers, but no one that is going to turn around the staff by themselves.
  20. I very much think Buxton is on the timetable you suggested. If he keeps producing the Twins won't keep him down. He could definitely be up after the arb deadline next year. I still disagree that next year is shaping up to be extreme puntage.
  21. I thought he was already playing 3B.
  22. He also had Milton and Mays, and perhaps Lawton too. I think the Twins have only done two contracts in history that were 4 years or more that didn't include some arby years. In a very minor Twins defense, contacts of 4 years or more that don't include some arby years are pretty rare in baseball. I think there were only 4 total last offseason.
  23. Sore arm.
  24. You bring up a lot of good points/questions and I think most will actually be addressed by the end of the season. Most players you listed will get their shot. I have two pushbacks. Why are the Doumit and Burton extensions offensive? They are role players who make a combined $5 mm. They fit a need on the club but would be relatively painless to jettison if they collapse. Also, you suggest the Twins should invest in young, elite free agents. Sounds great. Who in the next class do you think fits that description?
  25. Good luck on the recovery.
