  1. I imagine this is the reason. They don't see much of a reason to call up Garver ahead of Vargas if he isn't going to catch. And I'm doubtful they would put Garver out there behind the plate ahead of those two right now.
  2. I could maybe go for either of them (but they weren't mentioned). Perhaps Melville too. Any of those guys could potentially be fine middle guys in September.
  3. None of those arms mentioned do anything for me. The one guy who could be interesting in an expanded bullpen is Romero, but I'm not sure what they have planned for him. And I think Turley could bring something too. Beyond that, would need to go outside the org.
  4. Kintzler himself is not irreplaceable, but they are still short in the pen. Trading away one of the more effective arms isn't going to help with that situation. Would be something if they turned around and added another arm or two.
  5. Up to 500/545/750 in August. I see no reason he can't keep this pace up for the rest of the year.
  6. 1.5 games back in the wild card. Selling was a blunder considering the returns.
  7. So sure you want elite at every position and should strive for it. I don't think Polanco should be given infinite chances and there should be very clear backup plans in spring training next year. And at the very least, he can be a utility guy while he is still pre-arb. But he was league average as recently as last year. I'm not sure that is so farfetched, and would allow resources to go to plugging more gaping holes in the interim.
  8. Probably not a difference maker, but still think he has a league average-ish potential. Those types of players are important to fill out a competitive roster.
  9. Wow, I never saw a July split for Polanco. That's amazing. 308/357/462 in August!
  10. BBs and Ks are certainly very important, but will only take you so long if you can't hit with some pop. That is the main concern with Polanco this year. His k and bb rates have improved from last year, but the ISO (and BABIP) dropped significantly. Just not hitting with any authority. I would normally think this means there is a minor injury but haven't heard anything. He had some mixed results with his power in the minors, but I thought he had turned the corner last year, and now has regressed quite a bit.
  11. I know this has been rehashed ad nauseum, but I think it was a mistake to make the selling decision right after the Dodgers sweep. The Twins were still on the fringe, the schedule was going to open up a little for the Twins and the Royals/Indians weren't going to win every game. But alas.
  12. Kepler can play 1b, but has only played 4 innings total the last 2 years. His experience is from the lower minors. But it's 1b. Clearly Vargas or Garver would have been better options.
  13. Indeed. Would be a pleasant surprise if even 2 of the guys listed here make an impact in the majors.
  14. Point is even morr obvious with the embarrassing lineup they're running out there today. If Sano is out it looks bad in a hurry.
  15. Agree. And it's not like there weren't reliever options to send out. On the other hand, Granite wasn't likely to play much.
  16. They are professionals and they are talented enough that they'll have moments in the rest of the year, probably when they call up some younger guys. But I would have preferred their professional training the next two months was trying to bounce back and fight for a wildcard over learning once again how to run out the string.
  17. But the sky is falling. It's over. The front office said as much.
  18. This is literally true but my general thought is players aren't robots. Selling at the deadline was going to lead to an inevitable deflation throughout the roster and probably coaching staff too. Perhaps the right move to sell, but I would have soft bought, give some incentive for the young guys on the roster to fight through and finish strong and build on that going forward. Instead the season is over and they're going to limp for a while. I don't think the return they got is worth this cost. The team might get a little second life when they call up Garver and perhaps the AA arms, but they aren't exactly elite guys.
  19. Certainly possible they aren't right. Might be good for Dozier to get away from here as well. I do think you scrap and claw to borderline relevance and management pulls the rug out, it's a little deflating.
  20. I believe when you are a fringe contender and you sell, effort/result is going to fall off. Could be an ugly 2 months.
  21. I highly doubt it's only innings, but it serves as a useful shorthand. Teams track stressful innings for minor leaguers and pull pitchers accordingly. And innings are usually not a hard cap, more a target range.
