The difference is that he didn't want to use his best 3 relievers. Molitor strikes me as aggressive with his relievers going for wins if he has the right ones available. He pushes his starters when he doesn't. It's why I don't especially blame him for last night.

To be clear, I would have absolutely pulled him after the walk and I wasn't exactly ecstatic about him even starting the inning. But I also wasn't really excited about the prospect of Pressly and Duffey getting through 2 clean innings. It's another situation where I don't think he had a clear option.

2 hits and a walk, even if unlucky, is not pitching well. I like to think Molitor would have pulled Colon of he had his full complement of relievers (or at least most of them), but he needed to get through 8 innings without using his best 4 relievers. My blame, such as it is, goes a little higher than Molitor. This type of loss directly results from taking away bullpen depth. Plus 3 runs is a little light.

Agree. I look forward to reset for Kepler next year against LHs, but it's 100% winning time now.- 64 replies

I certainly agree that Mejia has talent and potential and has flashed, but I am concerned about injury and short starts (partially because of what is referenced). I'm just a little hesitant to put him in as a core guy until I see someone who can go 30 starts and 180 innings.

I hope you are right about Mejia. Seems a little aggressive at this point.

Article: Whiff Of Success: Gibson Making Bats Miss
drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think if there was an easy replacement for Gibson you would do it. But Twins will need to add at least one starter, possibly two, even if they keep Gibson. It is just not that easy to get good replacements, especially not at ~5mil for 1 year that he'll get. That is a contract worth tendering in my mind. I'm not especially interested in trading from a position player and creating a different hole. -

Actually qualifying is a pretty significant achievement. It's quite telling that only 77 pitchers are on pace. -
I would expect them to lose 0. If they didn't get called up this season, aside from the injured guys, I really wouldn't sweat it.

77th best pitcher in mlb doesn't strike me as a *bad* thing. I don't think he is especially good, but it is not always easy to replace that many starts. Especially not in this free agent market. -

Man, that was a serious pounding. Sounds like Sano might be back within a week too. Twins are setting up to be a little frisky in the playoffs.- 47 replies

I always thought Radke was properly rated, as shown by the attempts to wish every pitcher that has good control but not elite heat will become just like him. A poor man's Maddux! -
Cubs significantly more than Cleveland. But I generally agree postseason experience isn't that significant.

I don't think pointing out his "success" rate is a criticism either, it is stating a fact. I see Rosario and think he has the skillset to grab some bags in the bigs. Maybe he should be more judicious, maybe it never comes. I don't mind the aggression in close games.

Rosario gets better at stealing. I'm not convinced he's doomed to be a 50% stealer.

There certainly is talent on the roster, just not as much in the bullpen. They're playing solid ball and their best hitter as been out 3 weeks. Also impressive.

I see it as part of his skillset, I am generally in favor of more aggressive play on the bases (keeping player and game context in mind), and it was a game situation where it was an acceptable risk. I realize his SB/CS numbers are not great, but I don't see that as a reason to shutter the strategy.

I generally agree with the sentiment here. That Molitor got the team to this point with this bullpen (not to mention rotation) is truly remarkable. If only he would stop bunting.

I will say I imagine Busenitz gets the next crack at that situation over Pressly.

Using Pressly over Busenitz is not the B Squad. Molitor would have no reason to hold back Busenitz. Using Boshers for one LH batter, as has been often requested here, is using him correctly. Perhaps Rogerd should have been used instead, I'll grant that, but if Boshers can't get 1 LH hitter out, the Twins truly have no second lefty.
