  1. That's been predicted for years and I think it is less likely now as it has been in a while. A prime example where the reality of dealing with humans trumps a slight advantage that could theoretically be gained.
  2. I think you can state Ryan is doing fine with the rebuild while also saying that Epstein is running circles around him. Really no shame in that, Epstein is running circles around everyone. I'm personally still wait and see on Luhnow.
  3. Fear not, Dusty Baker will clean it all up.
  4. Wait, someone added that second paragraph to my post, I didn't even mention the Astros. Sneaky mods.
  5. I stopped comparing Ryan to Theo Epstein last year, he's in a league of his own. It's a competition for second. Who else is playing? The Astros? They seem to be well ahead as well.
  6. Yea, I don't think it is the $6 mil, but the 3 years for good but not great relievers.
  7. I also wonder if the Red Sox are going to ultimately end up with Fernandez. That would be a dominant team.
  8. I absolutely agree. Would never argue otherwise. But I do think this is a situation where as fans we get caught up in the lesser details of what is good or bad move and miss the larger picture slamming us in the face. And I do think it is a situation that can be improved, if not exactly fixed.
  9. Has anyone made the distinction that this is a smart move for the Cubs but bad for baseball. Having a young player who is good, ready and has a open spot in the lineup but is still in the minors serves no one - team, player, fan or sport.
  10. So a couple of the leading (really) conservative Christians have more or less endorsed Trump's no Muslim policy and he's crushing the polls in South Carolina. I'm becoming less convinced that he can't win the nomination. I know poll history speaks otherwise but Presidential politics seem a pretty small sample size and one cycle it's going to be wrong.
  11. It was a 83 win team on the upswing, I'm not convinced he should have touched too much. Clearing space for younger talent strikes me as a reasonable course of action.
  12. I don't think rolling with Buxton on day one is a hole. I'm probably too optimistic but I like going with talent. He could be more creative in upgrades, but I see a representative player in every spot going into the season, though admittedly with uncertainty in the OF, which I expect addressed with a veteran signee.
  13. Right. TR was uncharacteristically aggressive, filled most holes, and now we are going crazy over a LH reliever and perhaps a 4th OF. Makes sense. Despite what people might think, ONE free agent LH relief pitcher has been signed so far. And it is absolutely wise to wait and see what OFs might drop. So I would wait until a few more come off the board personally.
  14. I generally agree, but they need to get at least one LH, there just aren't enough internal options. I wouldn't mind them taking a flier on a nonroster reclamation guy or two as well. Looks like they'll roll with Perkins, Jepsen, May, Fien for sure - so hopefully a LH fa reliever, likely Nolasco as the depth guy and a whole bunch of guys that can battle for the last spot or two.
  15. I always thought a better solution was to make free agency after 6 years, 45 days. This would make it less likely that a team would hold a player down on the front end, give teams a free September callup and no penalty for starting a player on the roster from day 1. Plus side is that more or less the best players play what they should, or at the very least less players would be manipulated. Of course players won't do this for nothing - so could be potentially be traded for expanded roster or quicker arb.
  16. I don't think AZ will hugely regret anyone they traded but I don't see how Miller is that good.
  17. And don't forget the torture. Never forget the torture.
  18. Bigotry was always there, and it, along with fear, has always been exploited. Usually just a little less explicitly.
  19. Minnesota is fundamentally a much stronger state and should always have a better economy than Wisconsin, Kansas and Missouri. It also can't be ignored that Minnesota has some of the biggest gaps between whites and minorities and college educated and non college educated in the nation. Democrats are certainly the better party if you are a college educated white person. I lean Democrat, and nothing the Republicans are offering at the moment is doing much to change my mind, but there is a whole lot going on out there that can't be ignored. Even when Trump inevitably goes down, all that he represents isn't going away.
  20. You don't think loose immigration laws have hurt this population? You don't think expanded welfare hurts this population? Are you sure Obamacare is a net positive? And yes, I think tax cuts, even small ones, do help them. Remind me again how exactly have they voted against their interests? Neither party does anything for their interests, so that seems kind of difficult.
  21. I agree on the feedback loop of media. He is certainly a perfect storm of the current age in that sense. I wouldn't dismiss him so easily, and if he doesn't get the nom, doesn't mean he won't run as a third party. I used to think he was good for race in that he forced conversation to a place that the parties wouldn't take it (in a somewhat positive sense), but now he is taking it to a much, much darker place. But I will still push back a little in your characterization of his followers. They generally are less educated, less religious, lower income, but somewhat moderate (outside of immigration). You can dismiss them as stupid if you want, but they are a significant part of the country, they are currently getting crushed from a variety of directions, and neither party is doing anything to speak to their concerns. What do you propose they do as an alternative? Trump didn't emerge from a vacuum, he emerged from a very real and very ignored reality of our country.
  22. That's partially true. I think Trump is more the result of promises unfulfilled and the current system failing to address problems/concerns/fear of a significant part of the population. Both parties are absolutely complicit in this.
  23. It's not aav it's the years. Jepsen is a great example. I agree he was good and liked the trade, but many were quite upset and he'll have his ups and downs this year and going forward. That is locking in a roster spot.
  24. Good for the Daily News.
  25. I have a simpler thought. There are lots of people in this country, a small percentage are crazy, and they have way too easy access to powerful weapons that can do significant damage. I don't buy more counseling or better education will do much. Those that engage in mass shootings likely already have plenty of access to these services.
