  1. I'm not certain there would be a clear way to balance this. If Sano has no interest in staying they're in a tough spot. To compete quickly they'd have to throw a lot of money at very uncertain risks of extending Dozier, mid-rotation arms, relievers and the like. That bill would come due and would likely be severe. Quick competition has to mostly come internally, otherwise it will be a minimum of 3-4 years.
  2. I'm still in favor of taking Wright.
  3. I support taking a pitcher, but I don't think it's clear. I'm going off what Callis just said yesterday.
  4. Good point. If they don't use one specific pick on a pitcher there is no way to rebuild the pitching. If they take a pitcher, I'll support it, but implying they must draft a pitcher with this pick because of past blunders (from previous front office leadership no less) is terrible process.
  5. Does seem there is some potential depth for 35 and 37, both in hs arms and college guys that fell a little from preseason ranks. If they like McKays bat enough then snatch two pitchers with the next two picks, that could be a very a sound strategy.
  6. If they believe in the bat, I would take a bat. Much more likely to return value.
  7. Agree, that's why I includee it as a contradictory opinion. Callis is somewhat plugged in, but this is based on sources outside the Twins.
  8. With Gibson and Hughes coming up, no guarantee that 9 is enough.
  9. Would be first 1b to go 1-1. Greene would be first high school righty. I'm still Wright.
  10. That I can see. My mistake for missing the original context.
  11. I'm not sure any of those three things can be assumed right now. And Burdi could have made it, but he got hurt. Not sure 7 innings answers that question.
  12. How about the reverse. Burdi pitched a total of 3 games last year and Melotakis is less than a year recovered from TJ, and while he's been fine, is not dominating AA. What exactly are you basing your hope on?
  13. I would absolutely not want a game determined either way by one of those split second plays at 2b that can only be spotted going frame by frame. I'm not against replay, I think it is especially valuable for home runs and fair/foul balls. Personally, I would only allow challenges if called for within 5 seconds or if umps wanted another look themselves. Too much standing around, not even great outcomes when used. For me, it is about fairness, not perfection. And it is not like computer zones won't have problems, there is enough of an error margin that will exist that it is not especially clear it will be that much more accurate overall. And on a final point, while I do like technology, I also like to occasionally get away from it. Baseball is still a sport, played outdoors. Waiting for a red/green light after every pitch would not enhance the experience for me, no matter how "accurate" it claimed to be. There would be unintended consequences to this that really aren't being thought through enough. Replay right now is not a finely tuned machine, and the fixes aren't obvious either.
  14. For the countless times you've criticized the front office for not calling up young guys last year that's the best you got?
  15. Relievers from the minors will be up soon. And it will be glorious.
  16. I guess I see baseball umps as very fair, they just aren't perfectly accurate. There are tradeoffs in the pursuit of perfect accuracy, not all of them are necessarily for the better. For example, I don't think baseball is a better game because we can now spend 5 minutes reviewing a play enough to see if someone sliding into second broke contact with the base for 0.1 second. It might be more accurate tho.
  17. Or better yet, if they actually had players worth paying. They were so desperate they couldn't stop handing out terrible extensions.
  18. Some go up, some stay even, some go down, depending on competitive cycles. I don't think payroll is the issue, it was incompetent front office work. I'll always argue that line of thinking gets Ryan off the hook. If the Twins were good and filling Target Field and needed to pay some players, they would.
  19. They are PA, just not logged as AB. If a walk/hbp counts as an AB, then batting average is no more.
  20. 6-35 with some options is probably a good deal for Kepler and Polanco this offseason.
  21. Also, wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to add something like 5-165 as a player option on the backend.
  22. They might be able to get an 8 year deal, with free agency when he's 30. Digger a little deeper, it will be a minimum of $25 mil for the FA years, and I think we are light on the arb years. Maybe 2-5-13-16-27-27-27-27 8, $144mil. He might not even take it.
  23. It is definitely this offseason or not happening. Once Machado and Harper break the bank in 18-19 there's no incentive for any elite player to sign an extension.
