  1. While fair, it's also not clear there are many really good teams outside the Central either. Probably the Astros and Red Sox are the best with Cleveland, Yankees will be a tough out if pitching holds up, and Orioles are doing their thing. Outside of them, Twins can hang with everyone else.
  2. Plus he still brings speed and good d. Probably won't be an elite hitter with the swing and miss, but likely a very solid all around player with some good pop.
  3. Any extension would come after this season. Perhaps we'll have a better understanding of his baseline.
  4. Also coincides with more resources available. Whether that was driven by Smith or a new reality thanks to Target Field (and other revenue sources) we can't answer. I generally think Smith brought a new aggression made possible by a new revenue reality.
  5. The initial big blunder with Mauer was only giving him 4 years in his first contract. If it was 6 or 7 like it should have been, it would have prevented much of the contract fiasco that followed.
  6. And Sano's not going to sign 4 years and an option.
  7. Pretty sure, despite being the highest, he was still only about $700k, Polanco was $575k. They had an international budget that was set and Polanco and Kepler fit into it, and was representative in the years before, and especially after (once Target Field was open). Sano was an off the budget type of deal. I'm very glad they did too. Good scouting.
  8. Kepler and Polanco would have been signed under anyone, they were nothing special budget wise. Smith had to really push to get Sano. That was a nice gift to the organization.
  9. And to keep beating a dead horse, imagine all those things and an additional good bullpen piece or two.
  10. Still my guy for now. Callis said again today he has Twins going McKay, but doesn't know the position.
  11. After Sano, Kepler would be my top extension guy this offseason. Would probably consider Polanco too. Both in the sweet spot of being good enough to warrant it, but not so good they'll pass. Of course, I'd break the bank for Sano and extend Dozier too. Finally a reason to bust out the checkbook this offseason.
  12. Losing 15-20 lbs probably helped too.
  13. Outs recorded and runs allowed are probably the most important thing in baseball. Do think the current pace doesn't stay going forward.
  14. Without question, but that is probably true of any prospect coming up. But he should have enough to be an effective starter.

    Thor

Torn lat. Can't imagine he returns from that quickly.
  16. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
  17. And I don't think the team will move on Gibson first. They'll throw Gibson out there until he is forced from the rotation by someone else. Even if Berrios is great, it will still have to be another starter (such as Mejia) that forces Gibson out.
  18. I'm looking forward to Berrios getting another crack at this. And the front office isn't going to call him up unless he gets at least 5 starts or so. For Berrios, it's not a him vs. Gibson thing, it is solely his develpment. If Berrios is good, he'll stay. They'll move the other pieces around. If he's not doing well, they'll send him back down and figure it out.
  19. I'm not going to complain too much, but the 33% K rate could use some improvement. If that bumps down, even with an inevitable babip drop he might be able to maintain a similar level of OPS and wRC+. I do wonder if his higher K% does lead to a better babip and ISO. Wouldn't fiddle with the approach *too* much.
  20. I think he is the one called up this week, but this is the rub: If he's called up he'll get a couple of starts and hopefully he does well, but they won't keep running him out if he doesn't show improvement, no matter how much he has dominated AAA. At least not at this point of the season.
  21. Both Melotakis and Burdi have injury considerations. I suspect that if they bullpen doesn't implode, they'll slow play them as long as possible to ease them into the workload. If they stay healthy I imagine both will be up later in the season to give them a taste.
  22. He's still due for a league mandated day off any time now. He'll be fine.
  23. If the Twins keep sitting in the .500 or just below zone, I would think Santiago is a pretty clear trade candidate too.
  24. I'm just not that high on Santiago. I trust him second in the rotation right now, but that could easily change. And it wouldn't take a *big* signing to do better than him.
  25. Because they can do significantly better than Santiago.
