  1. So it's ok for you to assume what Gardy and Ryan "intended" to say but not others? You just assume they meant well, others assume they meant to dog him. You're climbing all over people for the exact same thing you're doing, just with different opinions. No one denies Baker was lying. The difference is they assume he was lying precisely because he didn't want to be labeled soft and have the team go to the media. They did anyway, but about his lying. (Poor guy can't win!) And then, hypocritically just a month later, brushed Pavano doing the same thing under the rug! It's real simple - Baker should have been more honest. But this is also a club that has made it quite known to the public (and thus the players) that they don't like whiners. Slowey, Perkins, and many others have been listed as examples of this. Baker may have felt forced to put on his tough guy hat because otherwise he'd get Slowey'd. There is nothing more valid about your version of the events than anyone else - quit trying to pretend you have any facts that back you up. You're making assumptions. The real hypocrisy, and why this deserves to be ripped, is because they went public about Baker and then were quiet, unassuming, and still complimentary about the EXACT SAME SITUATION with Pavano. ("The guy was trying to gut it out") Hell, at least Baker was just lying about ST starts - Pavano was hurting the team when the games counted and they STILL didn't say a word about him to the media.
  2. Might wanna cut that one in half at this point.
  3. You take issue everytime it's suggested that the Twins handled this situation poorly. If you don't care to articulate your position, don't whine when people have to make assumptions. This is now the third time I've asked you to explain your position. By all means - because what you convey is pure insanity in defending a mishandled situation.
  4. I had been meaning to look that up actually. He seems like he just flails from the right side - as if he's a totally different player. Numbers back that up.
  5. SSS - so does Mastro. These aren't your classic platoon guys. Maybe Mastro can play CF on the road - that's where we need a platoon.
  6. You know what would help this truly insane position you hold? If you just acknowledged that the way they handled it with the media compared to Pavano was wrong. Then, at least on some level, you'd warrant credibility on this.
  7. I don't want to randomnly move people, I'm just intrigued he played it in the past. If they moved him because he's inept at the position - than I don't even want to experiment. But if they moved him because they felt it was a better fit or organizational need....then it may be worth a gamble. At this point Dozier isn't showing much of anything to make me think he can be a starter. He's a rookie and he could reverse things, but he's been downright putrid now all season. With the lack of organizational options, I'm game to try Mastro there if he can capably field it. I'm not interested in throwing anyone out there that will be a liability in the field.
  8. I guess I struggle with the idea that Mastro's bat won't make it but Dozier's inept play somehow warrants a continued look?
  9. Have you seen him play it? If he's bad at it like Plouffe is I retract my experiment request. I saw Plouffe play short terribly and posters here have made solid points about why third works for Plouffe and middle infield probably never will. You can cling to your delusion though.
  10. I've never heard AJ give such an accurate opinion.
  11. Also....Span's home/road splits are amazing. What the hell?
  12. I don't have any delusion of him being a star, but people might think he's a lefty killer, but his splits are pretty even. He brings a lot of speed, mediocre pop, and a pretty aggressive approach. It's worth a shot IMO.
  13. So now we revoke business licenses when our politics disagree? Seriously, how long until the lefties and righties start killing each other in the streets? This is so f-ing stupid.
  14. This came up the other night in the game thread....but giving this guy some significant time at 2B in September is worth a shot right? Does anyone know about his past with this position? His bat and speed are intriguing - especially when you look at what we have available at the position in the near future.
  15. It's a very good player - Span is probably my favorite Twin at this point - but I'm just suggesting that we overlook just how valuable he'd be as a 40 double-40 steal guy. His speed is capable of that, his instincts are just brutal. It's almost sad to watch him try to be that guy, but he's just not able to do it. He can't read a pitcher's move to save his life.
  16. My caution is this - just because we didn't do something doesn't mean we made the right decision. I prefer to think that we got crappy offers, but what the Reds gave up for Broxton (a guy with plenty of red flags himself) indicates that there was at least some willingness to shell out. Burton's best value was likely to be at the deadline, that doesn't mean we got an offer we should have taken (none of us know that), but just because we held him doesn't necessarily mean we got bad offers. We may find out that we passed on some deals we'll later regret. Or we may find out we were right to just hang on to these guys. Our track record the last 5 years of sell low and buy high makes me very skeptical of that reaction.
  17. This has gone from maddening, to funny, back to maddening, back to funny. I think at this point I'm burnt out on this garbage.
  18. Good basestealers also help you avoid double plays and create scoring chance. Madtro almost single handedly got us on the board last night. Revere in the ninth kept us out of two. Span sat at first and created the need for an xbh or multiple hits rather than one. I still like him and he's a solid player, but the fact that he is a 15 SB a year guy rather than 40 hurts his value. And with his speed that is a shame because physically he should be capable but he's just awful at it instinctively.
  19. I may have muddled my point a bit - I don't disagree that we need a willing partner to pull this off. None of us know what was or wasn't on the table yet. But I am not so confident in JR that I would dismiss the idea that we left worthy offers on the table. Yes Pence fetched garbage but Broxton damn near fetched gold. I wouldn't endorse trading for the sake of it but I also don't endorse placing such a high value that nothing but absurdity is good enough. I want to believe we'd have jumped at one of those Cincy specs but I just don't have confidence in that. If Hammer stays healthy he might still have this value in the offseason but I can't believe Burton will ever have been this valuable again. We will probably be able to look back in a year and know for sure, but it sure feels like we just whiffed on selling high again.
  20. I would say at least with some of these guys "trading just to trade" isn't quite accurate. There are very valid reasons why dealing Span, Willingham, and Burton now would have been prudent. We probably won't know until the word gets out about what was offered, but those three have significant red flags about sustaining their current pace. If we got offers anywhere near a "sell high" value we may have made a serious mistake holding on to them.
  21. 18 attempts alone is part of the problem. Mastro, in a fraction of the ABs has that many stolen bases. Span's inability to utilize his speed on the basepaths is a MAJOR hit on his value.
  22. I thought what we overlooked was just how brutal he is as a base-stealer for his speed. Good god is he bad. Think how much better his .360ish OBP would look if he could actually swipe a bag from time to time.
  23. Ryan spending 15-20M and these comments makes me think we'll be targeting three Rondell White's. World Series baby. (Sorry, hard not to be a pessimist after reading this)
  24. I love Spannzie but good god his ineptitude at swiping bases really limits his value to thhe team. A guy like him has to be able to take second there. Or at least be a legit threat.
  25. Again I am baffled by Gray having a roster spot much less time in the 9th in a tied game. Also count me in the Mastro at 2b trial - guy plays a solid offensive game if he can field it.
