  1. You may well be right, but I think that's the direction this is going to head. I just can't see the Republicans dropping their social conservatism, they just can't get past that. So the only thing that is possible would be appealing to Latino voters. Given the popularity of Rubio I think that strategy could work, but I doubt the Republicans are tactful enough to make it happen. That said, a lot can change. We've seen both parties blow what appears to be insurmountable momentum the last few years. So you never know how someone will shove a foot in their parties mouth.
  2. Yeah I can't say I have a real nuanced eye, it's just the vibe I remember getting. From what he has for stuff I really don't see why he can't be a real solid arm for this club going forward.
  3. Look, I like Huntsman too, but that wasn't the problem. The problem was that he scared the social conservative base, it's why freaking Rick Santorum went as far as he did. Frankly, Huntsman was too reasonable on too many issues. The point from two years ago is that the Republicans swept total congressional control away. No small feat and it was totally unprecedented. Their ideas aren't quite as outdated as some are suggesting (well, in terms of public appeal) What cost them is that still too many moderates/libertarians/etc can't get on board because of the social conservatism and then they've ostracized one group that is rising in numbers, strong on social conservatism, but can't stand one issue - immigration talk. To me, if they just back off the immigration talk they could take a state like Florida and very heavily shift the tables in one move.
  4. Yeah....ignore him! That'll show em!
  5. I agree with Parker, he was getting hammered by batters because they were leaning out over the plate on him. I have him as one of the pleasant surprises I expect this year along with Parmalee, so I'm looking forward to seeing him pitch.
  6. Yeah, I know this is a Hicks thread, but I'm not sure Spansie ever got his deserved sendoff. He wasn't anything special, but a damn fine ballplayer. He was probably my favorite Twin the last 3-4 years.
  7. Pseudo...that has been the point! We all got on here and praised the Twin's trades. You can search my Ryan posts - I'm a fan of his. I like his emphasis on the organization, I really do. BUT.....we are not a penny-pinching small market anymore. He has financial resources and this team is going to have significant financial room. This offseason was started with a promise of aggression and was completed with the same old, risk-averse, poor allocation of resources, limited upside moves. Again, if their approach to this critical component of team improvement (FA...not trading) is this narrow and stubborn - I have serious concerns as a fan. That's the vibe I get that others are trying to communicate as well.
  8. Hard to say, but St. Peter and Ryan have acknowledged it and tried to tease a mid-season acquisition with it. (Which, to me, sounds a lot like more hope being sold ala pre-offseason talk) So seems pretty real to me.
  9. I think this is the struggle I find curious. It's social conservatism vs. economic conservatism and which wins out. Honestly, I think social conservatism will win out in part because the Hispanic community is so ripe for the plucking if Republicans go in that direction and soften some, not all, of their economic talk. Not to mention immigration talk. I would despise that shift personally, but I think that's how it wins out.
  10. Well jesus man, how many times does it have to be clarified? I specified it at least twice.
  11. So then marching in here to wag your finger at people being pissed at missing on this upside isn't really warranted methinks. WE....ARE....TALKING....ABOUT......FREE....AGENCY!!!!!!! Cmon Pseudo, you told us all that you get it and that this is unnecessary to keep repeating. Everyone loves and appreciates the trades. Ryan has a history of aggressive trading, no one is worried about that. We ARE worried about how this team utilizes free agency to improve the club now that the small market excuse is no longer valid. All evidence from this offseason points to this team having a stubborn, narrow view of how to utilize this important aspect of team building. Choosing Saunders over Marcum at this stage of free agency only highlights the problem even moreso. Reliability > Talent in free agency for this team. That is really disturbing for hope of future aggressiveness to help the core this team is building around. When there is no downside and only upside....and still we go with the same old strategy? That's not a good sign. I cannot say it any more simply than that.
  12. I'm not dismissing Harden, he's just not even in the same universe as Marcum for upside. So it's a completely different conversation. Back to the point, you ARE dismissing it. We KNOW what his upside is and you are minimizing it to the point of dismissal based on an inferred level of risk that you have no basis for other than speculation and flies in the face of how he finished last season. None of those moves had anything to do with free agent signings did they? Your point was about timing. If the timing wasn't right to sign Marcum...why pursue Saunders? Ask yourself....and you already answered it in what I quoted above....why are they choosing Saunders over Marcum. Then, maybe you actually will understand the frustration.
  13. You are being disingenuous to deny the upside advantage or to outright dismiss it. We all know the health risks that may be coming with him, the problem is that once again the Twins assumed less risk and less upside - a pattern that we have seen with Ryan for the better part of his entire career. It's completely in line with everything they did formerly under the guise of being a small market. Nothing about their situation should have precluded them from pursuing him much like they are now doing with Saunders. That excuse doesn't fly. You are the one bringing 28 other teams into the mix. I don't know their reasons and don't pretend to, I know how this team operates and we have a long standing pattern of ignoring guys like Marcum because they are "too risky" or "not reliable" enough. In other words - that they totally ignore upside in FA in favor or reliability. That is maddening and frustrating.
  14. Political issues are swinging wildly these days, I think all the hand wringing is a tad premature. We're barely two years from the Republicans having a historic slaughter in Congress. The party has serious long-term issues, which I find curious that they are actually thoughtful enough to be discussing these.
  15. This is bizarre thinking. You're removing a critical component of the debate simply because it doesn't fit the narrative you want. The upside exists because as of right now, he's walking into ST ready to pitch. He's not recovering from a surgery, he's not having surgery before then. So the upside exists, dismissing it to make your argument have merit is disingenuous. As for the rest of your post: I would suggest C) The Twins preferred Correia to Marcum because Correia is "more reliable" and Pelfrey is a "innings eater" whereas Marcum has had a few more off and on bouts with injuries so Marcum was never on their radar. He isn't their style of guy. So they were never interested regardless of cost because he was too risky. Hard to assert the Twins medical insight into his situation given they had virtually no contact with him of any formal kind. No, this was an issue of him not meshing with our philosophy, not with our medical standards. Your continued campaign to frame this otherwise has ZERO merit. I can't speak to the reasons of the other 29 teams, I don't know them intimately and neither do you. Positing their reasons as being a universal disdain for his health is predicated on absolutely no facts whatsoever. Whereas I at least have the fact that the Twins were utterly disinterested despite significant need and significant payroll flexibility.
  16. Who is ignoring it? That very real possibility is why he was as available as he was for that price. It's huge risk....but it also comes with tremendously more upside than the deals we inked. I thought you understood all this already?
  17. I think it's fairly safe to say that many of the guys Ryan is now counting on may not have been there if he was in charge when they were acquired.
  18. Damn "moderates"! It reminds me of Futurama with Brannigan and The Neutrals.
  19. The "woe is me" act is pretty sad when you can't even get this stuff straight. 4M this year (and even friggin next year) does NOTHING to hamper future payroll. This is not a hard concept. The fact that you bring it up shows how little you've invested in researching what you're arguing. Again, there is ZERO downside to adding Marcum. Zero. Multi-paragraph responses ducking this point doesn't help you save face, it only exposes how little ground you are actually standing on.
  20. Do you know what it is right now? Seriously? St. Peter and Ryan have said they have substantial "payroll flexibility" still remaining. No one is pulling anything out of their ass except you. Holy gods man. You have totally missed the point over and over again, perhaps you should be done until you can process what others are telling you before responding. There is zero downside and tremendous upside. What this deal represents, more than anything, is this organization's stubbornness about "their way" no matter the potential benefits of venturing from it. That narrow vision is very disconcerting for the future.
  21. Indeed, there are five pages of awful arguments from you. Do you even know where you stand? Because 20M is being pocketed by the ownership and the guy he bumps is Kevin Correia if he's healthy. Where in god's name is the downside? No more post after post of nonsense....where is the downside in that?
  22. Can LoganJones ignore him...that's what I'm on the edge of my seat about.
  23. Encouraging news, love the make-up of some of these hitters. Smith's aggressiveness still could pay a lot of positive dividends.
  24. Yeah, Republicans are stupid.
  25. Of the three SP they signed, two were serious health risks. Just what exactly, in your bizarre view, is "A guy like Marcum"? What exactly does that mean? Maybe you just don't realize he's a good pitcher, something we have none of. Plenty of blame to go around between Ryan and the Pohlads, but this was Ryan's call.
