  1. What story though? If you're looking at the story of how good the pitcher is, I think IP tells very little without the rest of the stats. I agree about why the Twins did this, that's part of my frustration. The issue is here that the Twins don't lack "depth" - they have equally cruddy options to Correia, we saw them marched out many times last year. What the Twins lack is talent...hence why it's so frustrating to see them continue to prize durability over effectivenes.
  2. Right, so why leave out the other half about how many runs they allowed. ERA, as just an immediate example, factors both innings and runs allowed. There are other pitching stats that do much the same. Innings pitched isn't a very good catch-all stat because many times innings are pitched for reasons other than the talent or performance of the pitcher. Like, for example, an exhausted bullpen. Or injuries. Did Blackburn, Liriano, and Duensing pitch almost 100 innings last year because they were good pitchers? Durability is good, but you want durability from players that are talented and effective. Durability can be trained, talent is much harder.
  3. Before your uppity sermon...did you read the thread? Twerp's post and the subsequent lectures by "Wise One" are the problem. This seems like a petty way to take a high-and-mighty stance after your inane posts in the Plouffe thread. Hope it made you feel better, but it was quite hollow. And as twinsnorth suggested, you're now directing this at me because of your own bad blood rather than at the real culprit in this thread. Which seems like it is becoming more and more prevalent. Other than Bonnes recent little poem-play - anyone with pessimism who is attacked you look the other way. Any time someone with optimism is attacked you come riding in with this high and mighty crap. The vibe around here is essentially that you and others are endorsing unfair criticism on people not feeling good aobut this season and are quick to give these lectures to anyone who responds. Talk about condescending.
  4. Reading comprehension. I understand that message boards come with criticism of ideas and disagreements. This growing trend of posters not liking that people are criticizing positions they disagree with is akin to someone running into a mall, arms flailing, and telling people that this isn't the place to exchange money for goods and services.
  5. I like what he said about Parmalee a lot, I'm really digging his potential as a solid bat for this team. I'm less thrilled with his answers on the middle infield and what he was looking for in a starter. If you want an explanation for why we landed Pelfrey and Correia over the other options available, it's clear that they wanted durability over talent. Which is a huge part of the organizational problem.
  6. Well, except for the fact that I could care less about people criticizing each other. It's a message board, it's rather silly to suggest people should ignore everything they disagree with. If that's your bit, you're probably at the wrong place.
  7. Why are the Twins so awful at timing these things? Honest question....why aren't these surgeries or medical treatments happening in October rather than December? It reminds me a lot of Mauer's thing from two years ago.
  8. You can contend whatever you'd like. I guess I'll just have to bask in the wisdom of criticizing people whose post you don't agree with because they were criticizing a post they don't agree with. I mean, if you're ok with ridiculous hypocrisy and all.
  9. Wouldn't that be good advice for the original post? No one is shouting down his optimism, some reading comprehension may be a "wise" move.
  10. Does Twins Daily stand for a new way "daily" for some to insult people who aren't currently parking their lawn chair in downtown Minneapolis for the October World Series parade?
  11. Heh. No manifesto needed. Your post is easily one of the dumbest things I've read in a long time. Completely baseless and amusingly pathetic. But hey, take whatever ground you need. From what I can see, we voted for the same thing. Pretty meaningless distinction you're drawing when we expect the same results.
  12. I love that all the people trumpeting optimism are still picking the team to be probably 15-17 wins from the playoffs......just like the supposedly horrible, puppy-punching pessimists. Heh.
  13. Yeah....because that will help my team get better. That's exactly the fear all of us should have - this front office is cutting dollars out of the talent and simultaneously cutting future dollars out of their pocket.
  14. Sure, that can happen. My point was that when you lay out what all needs to happen (just the basics) it's daunting. So all this "pile-on the pessimists because they aren't real Twins fans" nonsense should at least have a basic understanding of odds before doing so. Even this analysis - which is slightly optimistic - has them a .500 team But it assumes a BETTER offense despite losing two key cogs, relying on a near 40 year old infielder, two star players with recent serious injury concerns, and a lot of unproven talent. AND it utterly ignores the fact that the one defensive strength this team had was not only hurt, but totally decimated. (I'm not sure you can quantify the difference in range/fielding of Span/Revere vs. Unknown/Parmalee but unless "Unknown" is Superman I doubt it matters) Look, I'm not saying it's impossible. I've stayed out of the "bright side" thread because people are entitled to optimism if they choose to ignore the odds. But Bollinger is right about a great many things here - it's an unfortunate, sobering dose of reality.
  15. By all reports, Obama and Brennen are very close on all of these matters. The point here is that Obama is a hawk on this and if the very same actions were being done by a Republican the left would be falling all over themselves to call that person a war criminal. There guy does it and they're like "well, maybe we don't know everything he does..." and other similar crap. Same as Republicans can't say enough about Obama's spending while they were silent on Bush. The issues just seem to be getting more and more critical that these hypocrisies are happening on. I mean, jesus, do you want some idiot like Bush or Carter with the ability to nail you with a drone with this little oversight?
  16. We're talking hypocrisy, not stupidity. The Republicans did this during Bush when they all but went silent on spending as Bush kept increasing the scope of the federal government. But it worries me when something that should be at the core of the party/political ideal is so easily cast aside the moment it becomes politically inconvenient. If this was Bush, liberals would be outraged. Just like conservatives are now outraged about the growing federal government but were silent during Bush. If neither side can pull it's head out of it's own ass long enough to see reason on subjects like these, it's another kick in the nuts for the future. Hell, the best liberal "voice" out there on this subject is on a damn comedy channel. Both sides have got to stop this and the stakes seem to keep getting higher each time.
  17. So the moral of this political issue is that, once again, as long as your guy/party is doing it....it's right. My god political hypocrisy is annoying.
  18. These are all absolutely reasonable. And I'm interested to see if he can do that. The problem? According to Nick's "floor" - you're a pessimist.
  19. Um, I'm not being pessimistic. But this sure explains why you're acting like a scorned 13 year old girl about this. Yeesh. You also understand they fizzle, flash and then fall-off, never make it, fail to adjust, etc? He might well have developed and could be a key contributor. I don't know enough yet about him to know if that binge he went on is something we can project or was a flash in the pan. Hence why I said 4-40 - you could make a case for just about anywhere in there as far as I can tell. But for you to call his "floor" (meaning, the lowest thing we should expect) at 24 is a bit ridiculous. I would think his reasonable floor is more like 12-15 with a high ceiling for more. The "sure, he could hit 15 homeruns" tells me you either don't understand what "floor" means or you were overstating what you meant originally. To me, Plouffe is a wildcard I'm interested in watching this year. But I don't have a damn clue what to expect from him, that's part of why it's interesting.
  20. Because he concluded with that? And yes, it is a lot to ask for that much improvement and no reduction in offense. It's a lot having to go right and we aren't even talking injuries.
  21. How about because the vast majority of what you're predicating your prediction on is a small sample size. Most of his minor league career his homerun totals sat around 15. In fact, prior to 2011 the last time he hit 20 homeruns was 2005. So let's not pretend this guy has some kind of regular appearance at this supposed "floor" you've pinned him to. Players dependent upon streaks to boost their final numbers are much more prone to have swings in their production. See: J.J. Hardy's OPS+ He's got a number of things working in his favor, but we haven't seen nearly enough of him over the course of a full season to be nearly as ambitious as you seem to be. In any case, you seem to be misrepresenting my argument. I'm not saying he can't. I'm saying any projection from 4-40 probably has merit because he's a wildcard. I'm simply critical of anyone who wants to write it in stone that his "floor" is 20-25 homeruns. He could well play every day and still hit 15.
  22. Mixing minor and major league stats to make a point seems disingenuous. Not to mention all those presumptions. Plus, you forgot to mention that of the 24 homeruns he hit last year almost half of them came in a span of 56 at bats. Again, I just don't know how anyone feels you can project that stat given the binge it largely rested on.
  23. I just wonder if an organization like the Rays can't squeeze anything more out of him than what they did....why should we expect much better? If he had a skillset of some kind clearly better than what we already have - sure. I guess I just see him as redundant with the other garbage we have. I'd toss him a crappy offer but I wouldn't make any kind of serious investment in him.
  24. Can we get more than a two week binge from him before we start projecting home run totals? At this point, anything from 4-40 would have some minimal amount of merit. His streak was impressive and fun to watch, but that's all it was until he shows more than that considering how out of character it was in the context of his entire professional career.
  25. So if we only do all of that we still finish short of .500? Wow! And you wonder why people are pessimists.
