  1. I'm sorry, are you being serious or intentionally snotty here? They appear because they are a stat people do care about. But it's really easy to imagine scenarios as to why W/L aren't all that helpful. Take, as an example: Pitcher 1: 7 IP, 6ER, 4BB, 8 Ks Pitcher 2: 8 IP, 1ER, 2 BB, 9Ks I think we can agree who had a better start. Now what if I told you pitcher 1 took the win because his team scored 10 runs and Pitcher 2 lost because his opponent hurled a shut-out? This happens all the time with wins and losses and I haven't even mentioned how bullpens factor in. So, no, wins and losses are not all that valuable for assessing a pitcher's success.
  2. They don't tell you much about how a player performed. And they tell even less about how they might continue to perform in the future. So "flawed" may not be the best word. More like "incredibly limited".
  3. My question to that would be....why not just say that? A simple comment to the public like this: "We are tinkering some things with Gibby's approach to make sure he's ready to face big league hitters. We are very happy with his results, but there are still a few things he needs to do before he's ready" It's still vague and while it may not call off the attack dogs, it also isn't as equally dismissed out of hand like the absurd notion of "consistency". Not to mention, it might actually be accurate. I continue to worry that even if Gibson is a great guy who doesn't begrudge the Twins actions yet, hearing this nonsense in public would eventually wear on anyone. Especially when you're talking about his career and literally, tens of thousands of dollars and potentially much more in his long-term future.
  4. I don't expect a great deal. I just expect more value than I ever would have expected. He's a ticking time-bomb to regress at some point this year or next. No one thinks they are bringing in an A+ prospect, but I would suggest most of us didn't think he'd have ANY value. So being able to capitalize on that now would make what looked like an awful move into quite a brilliant one.
  5. Well, that's true, but that's the only one I can think of. I'm not sure what Willingham's value was on the market last year (none of us do), but I'm about 99% sure his production will never be better while he is with the team. I think that mistake is hurting the Twins double right now: they didn't sell high and now they are obligated to keep playing him when it should be Parmalee getting at-bats.
  6. I'm not sure Ryan was ever really in that position. He bungled Santana for the organization (badly) but most of his tenure he had little of value to sell. When he did sell it, he effectively turned it into competent players. Most of these most egregious errors happened under Smith.
  7. This binge reminds me a lot of Plouffe's last year. And it also has another very important similarity: the broadcasts have been heaping praise on Bruno for this accomplishment just as Plouffe credited him last year with his herculian stretch. If nothing else, it is SO refreshing to hear young Twins hitters being encouraged to turn and drive the ball. I know the team doesn't tell players not to hit homeruns, but for the better part of two decades we only hear about "use the whole field", "hit the ball on the ground and use your speed", "go the opposite way". It's just nice to hear "get your pitch and pound it" Even better to see it working, if even briefly.
  8. Absolutely. I'd also like to see them try and get some guys that were formerly thought of as big-time prospects that may be on the low end of their value. I'm thinking guys like James Darnell, Martin Perez, etc. It's no sure recipe for success, but as guys like Chris Davis show - sometimes you can get an absolute steal for nothing if you capitalize at the right times. Given that the team isn't competing, this is a perfect time to add guys like that and help them work through their struggles. I'd really like to see that be a part of our trade strategy this season.
  9. Exactly, there is absolutely nothing for Parmalee to prove in AAA. He needs ML at-bats. This "hey, we're in contention" myth because we're hovering near .500 appears to be upsetting some of the goals of this season: get players who could be part of the future time to show if they can make it in the bigs. Parmalee is at the head of that group and now he's losing at-bats to guys who won't be part of the future. This isn't Arcia or Parmalee....it's Parmalee or Willingham/Doumit.
  10. I don't expect Ryan to say anything different publicly. But I expect him to be doing the exact opposite privately. The Twins HAVE to reverse this trend of not selling high on players during moments in their career that scream for it.
  11. Call it what you want. I know this much: it doesnt directly contradict facts like team revenues as yours does. My theory may be wrong, but we know certainly yours is wrong.
  12. Perhaps because RYan is complicit. Or because he effectively hides the scrooging. IN any case there was plenty of cash to improve the respectability you claimed. I don't doubt the team wanted to be better and that includes Ryan, but they also appeared to have another motive. I won't presume to know, but I know what it probably was.
  13. Methinks you should ponder that question with consideration of who the owners are. It isn't for lack of revenue I assure you.
  14. The Twins have stated they use 50% of revenues for player payroll. We know financial commitments the team has. We can approximate arbitration costs. We know when contracts expire or need renewal. So yes, I do know quite a bit about how much payroll room there is. And I'm not some kind of wizard, this is information available to all people. The question is....will you ignore it like you do other evidence? Hide behind calling it "vague". Feigning ignorance of information that there IS evidence and data for is a quick way to not be taken seriously.
  15. Not sure if you are using sarcasm....but I was referring to Paul Allen, which is who Parker was referring to with his Dubay crack.
  16. I was hoping for an entertaining response. But a JD Durbin reference along with it? Wow.
  17. Ugh...what? You did read what you wrote....right?
  18. Cmon man, this is kind of sad. You claimed trading prospects for veterans wins world series titles. Don't hide behind a throw-away comment about Benson or broaden your point. I am attacking one very specific charge you made. That charge is one repeated by MANY in this fan base and it's just....plain....wrong.
  19. Please explain how the mid-30 year old outfielder with a litany of career injury problems is more here for "the long haul".
  20. If it was as simple as that, I count at least $40 million more ways they could have been more respectable. The only thing this team does gibsonly is "be cheap".
  21. Go back and look at what I quoted. That may help see where you got off track. I don't disagree about using all routes to make your team better, I disagree with your factually inaccurate claim I quoted earlier.
  22. The only acceptable answer to this "why?" is: Because they should've done it last year during his career year.
  23. We were talking trades, not FA. The bulk of your examples are FA.
  24. You're changing your argument. Please list the players. If you just cited Cody freakin Ross to defend your argument (the definition of a lucky fluke that really worked out), it would be more intellectually honest to lay it out there. You claimed trades win WS titles - let's see the proof. Here's a hint, we did this back on BYTO a few years ago - you won't find it, but feel free to try.
