  1. I would suggest that if this is the best optimism we can find within the organization (I think it is), that the results of Nick's search is the strongest evidence yet that the team needs to go outside the organization for help if it believes it can contend.
  2. I never said it might not be the reason, but it's speculation. It could certainly turn out to be untrue - same for Worley and Diamond. In, what exactly? You hear sterling comments about jerk players all the time because the vast majority of the time players, managers, and owners keep their negative comments behind closed doors. The rare exception like this is far more meaningful, as it is in any case in which someone is blunt and straightforward in an interview. Like I've said, I'm not opposed to signing him. I'm ok with it. But there are clearly some issues with this guy. As there is with most any player really.
  3. This isn't the issue. To be clear, I am sure he will get starts this year. What I hope is that they are a committed, invested amount of them whether he has highs or lows. Let him work through things, not rubber-band him back and forth. I just don't find that an effective way to develop a prospect nor to see what they are capable of.
  4. Well, one that jumps out is the Mets. Also the Giants, Toronto, Houston, Miami, Pittsburgh all could benefit from him.
  5. Well, you're also speculating about his production, or lack there-of, being injury related. As for the other players at Arizona, all of that is fine, but there has to be more to the story as well. I can't recall many owners or managers directly coming out and suggesting a player and their agent are conspiring to milk an injury. It certainly could be an organizational issue and a completely false accusation. It could also be that this guy has a terrible makeup and that's why he's failed to live up to expectations and stay on the field and he exasperated the organization that was banking on him for years. I'm on board signing him because our shortstop situation is terrible and we should be willing to take chances. But if this guy is the picture of a bargain at shortstop, there are a lot of teams that should be after that. And since so many front offices are ignoring him with virtually nothing else left on the hitter's market - it does speak to issues beyond the numbers you are crunching, no?
  6. I guess, since I share a similar thought, what is everyone want to see in a contract? I'm ok with bringing in Drew - but I don't think I want more than a 2 year deal. Hell, I'd prefer one year.
  7. Offering him a qualifying offer is a calculated move, not necessarily reflective of what I'm saying. It's certainly possible questions of his toughness and integrity aren't following him, but the comments by the Arizona owner were uncharacteristically frontal.
  8. I disagree. When you bounce him back and forth constantly you aren't giving him the best opportunity. Usually what you do is you create more questions than you answered. (see: Parmelee) As you said, they've invested a lot in him, they should also invest the most ideal opportunity into him as well. Not bounce him around during non-contending seasons and still have unanswered questions.
  9. I hope so, my issue isn't that he reaches a certain number of starts, but that he gets an extended number of them. Getting 5 here and 5 there to a total of 15 isn't the same as getting 15 in a row IMO. We've seen too much of that chunked opportunities lately for my liking.
  10. I'm not sure why we saw a comparison to Cuddyer or a list of his injuries. Those are irrelevant to what you are responding to. Here is a quote from Drew's past owner in Arizona: I was simply suggesting that if we are looking for a mystery roadblock to team interest, that a second team saying the same thing behind closed doors might explain a lot.
  11. Righ, but as Mayo points out he's also 26. So we need to see that actual performance in the big leagues, not AAA. Hence the blocking problem.
  12. One potential explanation is that the Red Sox are privately acknowledging similar issues with Drew that Arizona had. Namely, being soft and faking injuries. So maybe now there are two organizations lending support to the idea the guy has a bd makeup?
  13. Totally agree. I worry that Gibson is going to have a MUCH harder time getting back into the rotation than Hicks will into the lineup. If anything, it should be the other way around.
  14. Your point about Kluwe's cowardice is incredibly salient. Very nice job. With the caveat that we do it when it's convenient for us and we won't stand to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. Oh, and of course, we joke around with that same person for months and act like it never happened - then we nail them when it's most convenient. How noble.
  15. This is going to account for 100 more runs? Mauer's missed PAs largely were replaced by a .963 OPS and 165 OPS+. So let's not pretend we lost a lot there, it's more likely that Mauer/Pinto combined to produce about what Mauer would've done in a full season. Can we expect some young players to come forward? Sure, but that is relying on a ton of internal improvement from players with health concerns or unproven track records. The only way this team can be reasonably sure to improve will be to add someone like Drew. Otherwise this is a lot of hope and prayer - generally not reliable avenues of improvement.
  16. I agree, I gave him the benefit of the doubt at first because I appreciate his efforts for same sex marriage, but his radio comments yesterday shed new light on his article. I think a lot of people are lining up to defend him because of his cause and, as a result, aren't critically looking at what he did here. This was selfish and juvenile. It's the equivalent of a negative facebook post, it's just Kluwe once again used the platform he has to indulge himself with no cognizance of how his words/actions impact others. Also, was anyone else flabergasted when Leber brought up his article to the Maryland politician and suggested that Kluwe doesn't understand how his words are frequently interpreted? Kluwe insinuated that people who would get insulted by his "lustful cockmonster" language are missing the point to be insulted. I would think you wanted to be a little insulting, that's why you used that language. He appeared to think his prose was that of a gentlemanly discourse and was astounded that anyone would take offense. Imagine if the South Park guys honestly looked in the camera and were appalled that someone took offense to their work. You'd think them total idiots or glorified trolls. I couldn't help but do the same with Kluwe.
  17. Didn't Kluwe just write a piece basically saying he exasperated the two leaders of his franchise with his antics?
  18. With this I take no issue, I think you and Kluwe are exactly right to resist that environment and push for change. I just don't understand how such a smart guy always takes a tact that forces one to sift through his own BS to get the point. It's gotten lost more often than not. With his platform, willingness to be an outcast, and intelligence....he's done very little other than annoy those he could most directly impact.
  19. Defamation suits heavily favor the defendant. I'm sure Kluwe is aware of this and it's part of why he's grandstanding and daring Preifer to sue him on public radio. Kluwe also seems to want his cake and eat it too: No, I'm not trying to ruin his career. Just make sure he can't ever work as a coach again. He appears to be a guy that is incapable of understanding how his writing comes off to people.
  20. Is that what he's doing? I think he thinks he's doing that, but is this another example? I'm not so sure. His interview this morning on KFAN was enlightening and made me think even less of these accusations. It's worth a listen. My vibe was this was emotion and bitterness, not a legitimate complaint. More of that kind of embellishing you do when you're frustrated with an employer or ex-employer when you are bitter about how it ended. I can't shake that this motivated him and we aren't getting a fair take.
  21. I don't doubt Kluwe is mostly on point, but his blog/article/whatever doesn't benefit anything. If you agree with his stance in general you probably sympathize, if you don't it probably comes off as self-serving and unnecessary. I took it as being pretty irrelevant. As for this - he used the 12th pick in a draft where we could have selected Fairley, Quinn, or many other options and he spent it on a guy that many of us spotted from day one wasn't going to be a franchise quarterback. Like it or not, that one decision to hitch the team's wagon to him for 3 years should be a fire-able offense. It's ridiculous Frazier took the blame considering I thought he did fairly well with what he was given. (Though I don't disagree with the firing either)
  22. I would've felt better had Spielman been fired as well. He's a pretty solid drafter, but I don't think there is any question the QB issues are 100% on him. He totally blew that.
  23. I hope my fancrush on him turns out better than the last athletic outfielder I had a similar fancrush on. (Benson....ugh)
