  1. I didn't see 7ks coming with his profile. That was a well pitched game last night.
  2. That's a fine point. If, at the end of the day, Ryan basically shut down all trade talks for that reason I get it. I don't like it, I'd like to see more aggressiveness with selling high on a player with as many red flags as he had, but I get it. I just don't agree with it for precisely the reasons I laid on in 2012. That was his peak value.
  3. If Berrios doesn't get a call-up....do you truly "know" why they haven't done that? You can say you've limited your criticism of the Twins to situations in which you only know with absolute certainty all that transpired? Color me dubious of such moral high ground.
  4. I would venture to guess you should probably reduce your posted opinions by a sizable percentage then if you truly only want to comment on things you "actually know happened" or why they happened. There is always a degree of mystery behind everything.
  5. The circumstances are different, namely the recently signed contract. Either way, the problem here isn't that he "turned down" anything. It's that, by all reports, his stance turned away buyers. So if you go back to the original point.....a mid 30s, injury prone guy, in the middle of a career year? If all those reports are accurate (and typically they are, or very close) - it was the wrong approach. And it was the wrong approach for the same reasons then as they are in hindsight now.
  6. That's just it, by all accounts the Twins scared away suitors with their demands. Brock suggests he'd rather have someone who doesn't give away players....as if we must have one or the other. Just because you don't hand players out for crappy value, doesn't justify ridiculous demands either. In both respects you artificially suppress the market for your own player by your own approach. If teams are coming to you and your demands for the player are set so high it's described as laughable.....then you've gone too far to the other extreme.
  7. 2012 was career average almost exactly. (Which is kind of freaky) 2013 he outperformed it, though. I hate Mauer conversations, rarely can we go on without someone becoming his cheerleader and someone becoming a character assassin. I know this much - 2014 Mauer at 1B has a lot of plates of crow ready to be served at this pace.
  8. At least that's something. Even still it seems like speculation. I have trouble believing there would be high demand and the best you could get is roughly equivalent of what we did for Drew Butera. That strains credulity. It seems more likely that Ryan put him on "Available...but only if you're out of your damn mind" status and it never went anywhere.
  9. The pitching has been rolling very well, but Boston's offense isn't a high measuring stick. They're 8th worst in RS this season. We also happened to catch Toronto during a particularly good time. So we need to see it keep going, but I wouldn't draw any huge conclusions from this road trip.
  10. It may help to go back and look at just how ridiculously Hammer was producing at July 31st 2012. His value now is nowhere near that IMO. (Also, 7M a season for two years wasn't holding back his value then)
  11. Show me. I can't find that. I find a little of that when they start talking the offseason after 2012, but NOTHING about that at the July deadline that year. Everything I read says there were suitors lined up for him but the Twins demands basically scared people away out of their ridiculousness or flat-out refusal to talk about him. I keep producing evidence, it'd be swell if some of you would start to suggest some counter-evidence you claim exists.
  12. Read the link above from MLBTR. That site has proven to be pretty reliable in it's history. Every report they were collecting was that the Twins were basically making Willingham untouchable and off the market. And that we would've had MANY suitors for him had we made him available. Is that an absolute truth? No, but it's a mountain of evidence vs. one report that may have existed that I can't find no matter how many ways I google it. Sorry, but I tend to side towards mountains of evidence that fall in line with team habits. What you're doing is clinging to minuscule evidence (that so far no one can even find) because it fits your narrative.
  13. No, he said Span was "more pricey". Are you incapable of understanding the chasm between that and "it was so dumb I laughed"? If he wanted to start there for a week or so, fine. But he kept those demands there. The reason Willingham wasn't dealt wasn't because the best they could do is a C prospect. He wasn't dealt because the Twins set a bar so high no real talks ever started.
  14. That's a fair counter-argument and one I accepted as a fair argument at the time too. It was not, however, the primary opposing viewpoint.
  15. Sorry, but I'm going to have to see something to back that up. Every report from MLB trade rumors and things I can find in searches says the Twins were putting such high demands on trade returns that they basically made him untouchable.
  16. If the price you tell people has them hanging up laughing....that's not a good idea. High expectations are fine. Ridiculous expectations? Well that's ridiculous.
  17. There was SO much venom against these projections before the season. Kind of funny to see them as overly optimistic at this point.
  18. That was what posters/fans speculated. The Twins, so far as I know, never even entertained the idea. Here's one tweet from the time: This was from Jayson Stark at the time:
  19. That was part of the debate at the time and none of us can know what was on the table. But I'm 100% sure now of what I was reasonably sure of back in 2012 - never was Hammer's value higher than in July of 2012.
  20. This did not require hindsight. I know I was one of a few back in 2012 BEGGING the Twins to sell high on him at the deadline. The guy was mashing in July, he screamed "I'm only going to get hurt a lot in the future", and his odds of matching that production were slim. People, mistakenly, convinced themselves an injury prone guy with a softball player's body was going to somehow become more productive and durable into his mid-30s and be more valuable in the final year of his contract. (The argument was that an additional 2 years and 14M was somehow destroying his trade value in 2012) Some of us were railing against that aggressively back in 2012 and, yes, clamoring for us to move him. No 20-20 hindsight required on that one - every argument made by the advocates in 2012 of dealing Willingham came true because none of it should be all that shocking if you look at his career.
  21. Given where he was at three years ago someone might want to check if he's actually a zombie.
  22. This is purely hindsight. Vogelsong going Maddux for the Giants was absolutely a surprise. Look up and down the past WS winners and you will find scrubs turned heroes. Aces and all-stars with garbage performances. The very nature of playoff performances are a small sample size which, by the very nature of small sample sizes, are prone to all sorts of wonky results. Which, frequently, results in all sorts of unexpected things happening. Basically, if you don't believe that the playoffs are "anything can happen" then you might as well put stock in small sample sizes too. Chief is right, the regular season is easier to plan for and team building for that is important, but there are a lot of ways to skin that cat.
  23. It's the one time I would be ok hucking an object at another person's head.
