  1. Disappointing, I wanted them to get their taste ala Gibson last year. It's hard not to see this news as likely setting the Twins' window back another year at least.
  2. All part of prospect growth. Glad it's happening now and not next year.
  3. Surprising and risky from Boston. Just goes to show how unpredictable things can be though.
  4. I'm not necessarily dogging the Twins alone, I am using an asinine remark by Gardenhire in this example to illustrate the problem. We can certainly get away from glorifying it as "old school", that is a culture problem the Twins partake in.
  5. We need to get away from nostalgia deals, this season should've been a fine lesson in that.
  6. While this is very true, I think there is a happier medium between marveling at a guy for being "old school" for not reporting injuries and wanting people to constantly check themselves out of action.
  7. Even with the negatives about this offseason, Suzuki and Hughes represent enormously positive accomplishments for the front office this offseason.
  8. To a degree, yes, you are sometimes going to have older placeholders. The problem is this team rarely targets younger players/castoffs to fill those roles and it couples that with giving multi-year deals to placeholders. Just not my cup of tea personally.
  9. To the team's credit they have seemed more willing than in the past to do this. Still, when you given the Correias, Pelfreys, Willinghams, etc. 2 or 3 year deals they no longer serve the role of placeholder. Then they become entrenched and you start to make hard decisions about other players rather than discard them. That's how your roster stays an average of nearly 30 even as you're calling up young players.
  10. It is an indicator, it's not foolproof, especially when the roster is young. Now foolproof? That's a roster getting OLDER during a rebuild - that's a guarantee you haven't turned the corner yet. I would say, given the original premise, that such a thing is not "meaningless".
  11. Fuld is in his 30s. The rest I can't speak for when you decide to assign my argument to a hundred other posters and their griping habits as a scarecrow.
  12. And this is another great way to say what I am. The age of the roster during a rebuild does matter and does give a strong indication of the rebuild's progress. I'd also much rather roll the dice with young players with slim chances than gamble on old, mediocre players drumming up trade value. Just a preference and one that I think is very defensible.
  13. Well, gives me reason to watch the derby then.
  14. The likelihood of it accelerating the rebuild are slim if you have a bunch of AAAA players or failed prospects. (Not your own players, no one wants anyone rushed - just guys that are younger) The likelihood of accelerating the rebuild with Pelfrey, Correia, and even Willingham? Zero. So I lean towards slim as a preference.
  15. That's very true, I'd just like our administration to be a bit more brave and daring. Especially when there is so little to lose.
  16. Honestly? 90 losses and a 100 is a moot difference. And they wouldn't have had to play their AA players, they could've gambled on a bunch of DFA, non-tendered, AAAA players who all would've likely failed, but at least they would've been young with hope. Old retreads taht lead you to 90 or 100 losses? That sucks and it doesn't even allow for hope.
  17. I'd call that patching personally.
  18. Here's the sad part...the three catchers jokes are all well and good and deserved....but Chris Hermann may be the only logical choice to call up. We're that shallow offensively. And, to me, that's a much more serious problem.
  19. Sure, he had some upside. But he's not young and it was extremely limited, especially given what he demonstrated in ST. And I would credit Gilmartin as a fine gamble. There haven't been enough of them. I've also fully acknowledged they fail far more often than they succeed - which is why you need to cast your net wide. We haven't done enough of that IMO.
  20. This is HIGHLY frustrating. You have shifted the argument so many times you forgot what you responded to in the first place. The point is that they are NOT winning and they are not young. When the Twins turn over a prospect group that turns the franchise around the team's age WILL drop. So it's meaningful because it's the first true indication (couple with winning more) that things are going right. My frustration (along with many others) is that we're both old AND not winning. So we're adding players at higher cost and lower upside to have bad results. Until the roster's age starts dropping, we can't expect to win with aging retreads. The team's turnaround will come with a substantial drop in the team's average age. So until that drop starts happening - the end of the rainbow is still a ways off.
  21. Cmon ben, that's a totally different conversation. Picking up guys 2-3 years away from being hyped and guys 15 years from it are not even in the same ballpark. The team hasn't targeted enough young buy-lows and has preferred old buy-inbetweens. That's the problem.
  22. Possibly, but for two months he was also awful. So if you're basically gambling on "Which Correia do I Get"....you probably don't put much on the table.
  23. I'm curious to see if there is an actual injury. I can't shake the feeling that this is just an excuse. That said, I don't blame Gardy for him saying nothing until now. I do blame Gardy for sounding almost proud of his "old school mentality" and I have trouble shaking the idea that it is a culture because of comments like that.
  24. Absolutely, but it's a scarecrow that people want to "build" through FA. They want to add talent using a resource available. And yeah, I think we can all agree Pelfrey has turned out to be even more mind-boggling than it was at the time. With Nolasco there is reason to be surprised it's turned out this badly so far. Pelfrey? It almost feels like the baseball gods punishing stupidity.
