  1. Fear not....for Nick Punto is yet unsigned.
  2. So you're saying he fits in well with our outfielders?
  3. It's not just one. He hasn't managed 500 ABs since 2010.
  4. My ballot would be: Clemens, Bonds, Biggio, Raines, Johnson, Smoltz and Pedro. From my glance, those are the elite talents that belong being enshrined.
  5. If the corner OF spots are already (poorly) manned....why add one of the few players in the league that might be even worse with a glove in his hand?
  6. 2 months? Feeling optimistic eh?
  7. Nice work Twins, this is a good move.
  8. SS Santana 1B Mauer 2B Dozier RF Hunter DH Vargas 3B Plouffe LF Arcia C Suzuki CF Anyone but Hicks
  9. Perhaps Ryan's scale for good outfield defense is broken. For further evidence consider his Hunter comments.
  10. Should have added an "honest" next to that assessment.
  11. See the grantland stories or go through B-Ref. I haven't found a good website for composite playoff data, everything gets lumped by series and I really don't want to do the math. And JB, I'm with you in many respects, but I think what has happened as we've talked is you've softened the maxim to where it belongs: Having an ace is better than not having one. But people seem to take that idea too far and say you HAVE to have one and it's the ONLY way to win or that it dramatically increases your chances. And none of those things are true. But yeah, I'd definitely still take an ace. The Twins weren't better off without Johan, he just didn't guarantee them anything in a small sample.
  12. I am genuinely confused how anyone comes away with that positive of an assessment.
  13. Man is San Diego aggressively retooling their position players. I have to think Kemp plays CF there - it isn't a big CF and part of his issues last year (if I recall) was frustration being moved off of CF.
  14. People....Hicks is not a good defensive centerfielder. His "prowess" is average at best. If we're going to field a guy in CF that can barely hit .200....can we at least get a dude that covers ground like a madman?
  15. Of course and I've said repeatedly this is not an argument against having an ace. It's an argument against the notion that ONLY teams with aces advance in the playoffs. So if you're going to argue "aces are the way to win World Series" and treat that as some kind of "team + ace = world series" equation for winning it's worth pointing out how frequently that equation is bunk.
  16. Well, for one, they both are average to below average defensive CFs. Secondly, Hicks has catastrophically failed twice now and putting a switch hitter into a platoon is basically acknowledging he's failed to develop. I'm not ready to give up hope on him, not until I've seen him work at it in AAA and try one last time.
  17. JB, we had the best pitcher in baseball for several playoff rounds and we still took early exits. Here is another way to spin this: take a look back at the playoff matchups the last ten years and just look how many inferior teams advanced. St. Louis, just this last year, beat Clayton Kershaw TWICE. (He's 0-4 in his last four playoff starts) And he's possibly the best pitcher we've seen since Pedro was in his prime. Most of these maxims for how to win in small sample sizes are true in theory and then the chaos of the small sample size sets in and anything can truly happen.
  18. There are a lot of things that might frustrate me out of ST, but none of them as much as the idea that CF for this team is Hicks and Schaefer. I may lose it if that's what our plan is.
  19. Definitely, I would imagine it doesn't need to be shown that average or below average players are a bad way to win in the postseason. Then again, most likely you aren't there precisely because of those players.
  20. Except, in this case, inconclusive does back me up. The assertion is that you "need" an ace to win the World Series. Or that that is the magic ingredient. Inconclusive data means that opinion is not correct, it's not well-founded. I reject that notion precisely because the data suggests it's wildly overblown and not nearly as important as it is made out to be. Again, your last two lines made the point I made earlier - all you're really saying is that you prefer having elite talent over not having it. Well, yeah, I think we can all agree to that. But having an elite pitcher is a guarantee of nothing and a requirement to win nothing. So you're mistaking my argument to suggest I believe we shouldn't have an ace. I'd love for us to trade for, sign, or develop an ace. What I reject is the notion that getting one is the most necessary component of winning a title. You'll note we had one of these for most of our playoff failures and we barely managed to win games much less titles. That doesn't mean the problem was Johan Santana, it just means the notion that having someone like him is the solution to playoff struggles is preposterous. The only real solution to playoff struggles is having a whole lot better luck to go with as many elite talents as you can muster together.
  21. Your article backs up exactly what I've been saying, here is the money quote: So what I'm saying is backed up by data. The truth is most of the myths about success in the postseason are bunk and the reason for that is because those myths exist to try and explain how you can purposely win a randomly timed small sample size with consistency. Frankly - winning small samples is pretty dependent on one thing most of all: luck.
  22. I meant as far as fans evaluating the deal. Fans overrate prospects and love to hate certain guys and Moore is chief among them. So you combine Moore and dealing a blue-chip prospect and you get the silliness that ensued.
  23. I'm trying to convince myself that it doesn't seem likely.
  24. Every acquisition is a spin on the roulette wheel. The real truth is that people have too much prospect love and Moore hate and the two combined into a ridiculous overreaction to that deal.
